Sell me on windows 10....

There's no Windows 11 until there is. Companies change their mind. 10 has a stink on it now because they waited too long to provide a telemetry opt out and provide better control over updates.

10 marketshare is stalled at around 29%, with only a 4% gain in almost a year. Meanwhile 7 lost only half a percent share in the same timeframe, and holds steady at around 46%. That's off the charts bad for a new flagship OS.

I wouldn't be surprised if they rebrand and we just get "Windows" - no version numbers so they can't be held accountable to a bad one.

Essentially, they've been giving away an OS and people are saying "we don't want it". Now they're pushing for a fire sale by pushing a last chance offer to upgrade to Windows 10 before the free offer runs out.

Just noticed heatlessun is missing from this thread and others of a similar nature. He get banned?

Sig rig is still running Windows 7 I got back in 2007 for $29.99 as a student. I cant imagine paying for an "upgrade" even if I get DX12 out of it. Havent reinstalled my OS for 6 years.

Well you don't have to pay to upgrade. Your windows 7 key will activate windows 10

Honestly, eck. It works, but for personal stuff I literally only use it for gaming (I do everything else on linux, so take that for a grain of salt). It is fast, and honestly once support for Windows 7 is gone you won't have much of a choice if you want windows. It is less customizable in some ways, much more invasive of privacy, and more insistent about forcing upgrades. Basically my two cents is, it's bad, but you will probably have to switch eventually if you want to keep using windows.

Oh, I never considered that actually. But should anyone install overtop of windows 7? Since mine was a student key, i doubt it works as a full win10 upgrade

The point is if you want to get a Windows 10 license without cost you better hurry up and take advantage of that offer since Microsoft just announced a few days ago that the free aspect is being removed/stopped at the end of this year so after January 1 2018 if you want Windows 10 you're going to pay actual cash for it (assuming you're not pirating it or something). You can use some drive imaging software like True Image, Macrium Reflect, or Clonezilla or whatever the hell you want to make a bit for bit backup of your system partition (the one with Windows on it already), then install Windows 10 clean and use the Windows 7/8/8.1 key to lock in that free Windows 10 license - Microsoft stores the activation hash on their servers now so at any point in the future you can install Windows 10 again whenever or however many times you want and never require putting in a key, it will activate when it's only automagically against the hash they have stored presuming you don't change the hardware too drastically.

So either take advantage of the free aspect for Windows 10 soon, with about 6.5 weeks to go from this date (November 9th) that I'm making this post or skip Windows 10 entirely (my recommendation and that of many many others too). :D

It very well might. Those keys may be retail in nature. If so, you're good to upgrade for free.

Wow, you guys really got into it. Thanks a Bunch!

I've used linux mint since 2.1 Bea. Back when I was way into VMs, Multi booting, ETC. The only game I really ran on PC on the regular was UT2K4 which would load right on to linux. Of course I'd switch back to XP pro to play whatever else I was playing.
As far as using Mint and a console instead of windows for my gaming rig.. that sort of eliminates the point.... I'm not shelling out for a console that is inferior. The only game I want on a console ATM is Horizon. Which Isn't worth a whole console.

I think I may go the 10 pro / MSMG toolkit route.
It's going on a new SSD so I can run 7 off the old one while I get sorted, and have no problem switching back if I hate 10 after I mod it.

I'll watch that tutorial tonight. Does anyone know where I can find a list of what's safe to remove? Or am I just stuck playing with it til I get it right?

What "modern hardware" does Windows 7 supposedly NOT support?

Strawman argument, probablly at least for the next 5 years and possibly 10+ if Microsoft doesn't FIX the many many issues with 10 that have a lot of us NOT EVEN LOOKING AT IT ANY MORE.

Also, keep in mind that a lot of current "Windows 10 sales" are OEM DISTRIBUTORS force-selling it on a system pre-installed because their contract with Microsoft REQUIRES it only to have the end-user rip the junk back OFF the system to install 7 or LINUX or something they like.

I have a feeling that if the current situation continues more than another couple years, that LINUX might finally start making some serious gains on the desktop.

One day well look on windows 7 like we currently look at Windows XP, but that day is not today.

Something about having a dollar for every time we have heard that... o_O

Yep, it's been said for many years now. The more I use it, the more I realize there are a very large group of computer users who won't be using it. Linux is in a no-win situation for the desktop. The more "user-friendly" and "compatible" it becomes to accommodate less technical users, the more it would alienate it's existing user base. In a previous life, over 12 years ago, I worked for a major PC builder and helped design workstations for a Hollywood animation studio. We worked with various Linux support vendors to get the systems finalized for the studio, and that was a common theme the Linux vendors would discuss.

You'll only alienate the died in the wool neck beards, no one cares about them or their opinions anyway. Furthermore, Linux is already at the point where it's user friendly and compatible and the number of long term Linux users actively complaining about it is negligible.

The same thing can be said for Windows. Look at the progression of Windows since XP to 10. Its continuously stripped away granular functionality and replaced it with no-choice services for people who are too stupid to run them on their own. Here's some examples of changes that were born from bad practices.

Updates - I've seen a lot of people who turn off automatic updates straight away on an install of Windows, pre windows 10. It isn't common to troubleshoot issues with computers that have never seen a single update because the users think that somehow updates are bad. The normal user would go through the standard procedure of installing updates as needed or after they have had time to work out some bugs. Microsoft saw this and probably assumed the average user was too stupid to handle updates, so they are automatic and required now.

Anti Virus - Here, on Hardforum, you can open a poll and ask people what anti virus software they use and probably a third of them would reply "lol I don't. I'm smart and don't need one. I am very careful about what I pirate and the pron sites I go to so it will never be an issue for me". When you see this on computer enthusiast forums, a place where we are supposed to be a shining example of proper computer usage, there's a problem. Again microsoft saw this and bam.. we have defender baked right into Windows 10.

Like it or not, we are those neck beards you are talking about. We aren't the average user that comprises a HUGE majority of computer users that would use shit like cortana.

Most of what I see here are gamers that can't see past what OS supports EA games with their shiny new 'pay to play' feature, hardly neckbeards - Hence the reason why they disable updates, disable UAC and don't run A/V believing they're more intuitive than they actually are.

I'm a Linux user and I see Linux as headed in the right direction, baby steps are fine with me.

And yet again another thread about Windows where Linux becomes the primary object of discussion, this shit really needs to stop at some point. :p

There's nothing wrong with discussion. This is the 'operating systems' subforum, not the 'Windows operating systems' subforum. Discussion does not have to center around Windows.

It's literally off-topic because the OP specifically asked for information about Windows 10 and it's usage, period. Linux was not mentioned, not asked about, not considered, nor should it have ever been mentioned at all because of the topic itself.

Play semantics all you damned well please but you're wrong, plain and simple.

That's the nature of discussion, it evolves.

The OP has used Linux before, so discussion of alternate operating systems is not out of question.

Yep it seems that linux use pops up everywhere doesn't it?

My suggestion, at this point, is to report them. We've had enough threads closed because of them. I grew tired of having my PM box fill up with his messages calling me a troll for sticking to what the OP was asking.

So, I run both Linux and Windows 10. Personally, I prefer Linux, but it has nothing to do with Windows 10 not working for me, but that I wanted something different, and I wanted something that I know respects my privacy and security. That being said, I actually quite like Windows 10 and I honestly don't understand why people hate it so much. It's far more efficient, it's stable, and it's reasonably secure. Outside of the telemetry crap, which can be removed/disabled using any number of tools (I like Anti-Beacon personally), I don't see the problem. I've been running 10 since release, and I haven't had it crash a single time, I haven't had any application of reasonable age (last 10 years) not run, and they fixed the major interface problems that it had at launch. Sure, there are things that I like to nitpick, but none of them are deal breakers. I really do think people are making 10 out to be the worst OS ever, when that just isn't even remotely true.

Also, a lot of people seem to not like the Xbox integration, etc, but for me those are the types of things that I actually quite like in 10. I use Xbox Play Anywhere fairly regularly (playing Forza on the Xbox and my wife wants to watch TV, I go and pick right up at my desk on my PC) and I've use the Xbox streaming capability to play Halo. I do disable Cortana, I don't use OneDrive, etc, but by disabling them with Anti-beacon they don't bother me. The only real sticking point I have with 10 is the preinstalled crap like Candy Crush. That really does rub me the wrong way. Part of the reason why I build my own machines or reinstall on laptops is because I want a clean install without bloatware. Now you can't install Windows 10 without bloatware. I could see including that crap in Win 10 Home as a way to subsidize costs, but if I'm installing Professional I shouldn't have to remove that crap. No business is going to want/allow games on their machines, so that garbage shouldn't be preinstalled.

So to answer the OP's original question, I think you should use 10 if you want to stick with Windows. As time goes on support for Windows 7 is going to decrease, especially in regards to gaming. Unless Vulkan somehow manages to kick DirectX off it's throne, which I don't see happening any time soon, then to get the best visuals and performance you're going to need DirectX 12. DX9, 10, and 11 are basically on life support at this point, and once Win 7 is EOL'd they will die. I also believe that a lot of the quality of life improvements made to Explorer and other system applications make the interface much nicer to both look at and use than Windows 7. Further, the efficiency improvements made at the Kernel and API level in Windows 8 that carried over to 10 make for a much more efficient operating system than Windows 7. I know people will disagree with this, but to see the efficiency improvements that were made you need only use a tablet with low power hardware running Windows 10 and then install Windows 7 on it. Windows 7 runs horribly on these low power systems while Windows 10 is actually quite usable. When they made Windows 8 they did a lot of cleaning up and fine tuning under the hood.

And finally, while I don't see this as a positive from a power user perspective, I will argue that the Windows Store is by and large a move in the right direction for Microsoft. Similar to the Mac App store and Linux repositories, Microsoft creating a centralized application store where applications can be vetted and run in isolated runtime environments will go a long way to preventing end users from getting viruses, etc. I know this is controversial, but I honestly don't understand why. Why does no one gripe and complain about the Mac App store, but people get all up in arms when Microsoft does it? What's the difference?

So, that's my 2 cents. I personally think sticking with Windows 7 much longer is an unforced error or a fool's errand, pick your preferred saying. At this point you really have to decide to either go the way Microsoft is taking the Windows ecosystem, or you jump ship to something else. I personally have decided to do a little of both. I still run Windows, but I only use it when I want to play certain games. For all other tasks I'm running Manjaro GNOME. I'm personally happy with how I have things going right now, but a few more games on Linux would be welcome. I personally don't have disdain for any OS other than OS X, and I don't even really hate OS X, I just like using it all that much. I think the interface is old, it isn't as useful or streamlined as it once was, and the Finder is still just an annoying miserable mess even after they allowed you to sort folders first.

I'm also reporting you for trying to suppress free speech. If you have a problem with alternatives, maybe you have an ulterior motive. Do tell.

Please do. I was sticking to what the OP asked in all of these threads. Only someone devoid of rational thinking would take that as a suppression of free speech. Seriously.

So, I think Boonie was making a joke, I hope.

I've personally enjoyed my switch from 7 to 10. Everyone harping on about the "spyware" parts of the OS are conveniently omitting that those things only happen if you associate your user account with a Microsoft account, which is not required. Beyond that, five minutes and a guide on YouTube for services.msc will show you how to disable the rest.

That aside, it's just generally a faster, "snappier" OS than 7, which I like. To each their own on tastes, of course, but that's my 2¢.

I did and I will. Now the next step is to mute you. Seriously.

He * DOES * have an ulterior motive... it's called "Staying on topic" or maybe "please don't hijack someone else's thread because it is rude." You pick.

Oh dear God.

Free speech means the government can't jail you for expressing yourself. (Though, they can, really, if you express certain things.)

It has NOTHING to do with what you're allowed or not allowed to say on privately owned forums or in privately owned places by the owners.

Please... for your own sake, never use the words "free speech" again until you learn what they mean.

Yup, I bet this happens in the next 18-24 months. Probably once their "Fluent Design" initiative is fully in place.

Since windows xp i essentially use every version the same. New features be dammed everything old is still in place from windows 7 up.
