Qualcomm Outs Centriq 2400 Specs: Intel Should Be Afraid

Qualcomm released some numbers for their new Centriq 2400 line of CPUs, and they are better than expected. More importantly, Qualcomm comes uncomfortably close to Intel’s performance in the meat of the market.

Centriq 2400 is a full SoC, and it is built on a much more efficient process, Samsung 10nm vs Intel 14nm. Intel claims to have the process lead, but they are, well, being a tad deceptive. While Intel claims leadership, the similar performing and much more efficient Centriq 2400 is ~57% the size of a big XCC Xeon die. A bit scarier for Intel is that the Centriq had a 33% advantage in transistors per mm^2.

I see some issues with that comparison. Qualcomm is comparing a Platinum 8160 with 24 real cores/24 virtual cores vs. the Centriq with 48 real cores. The Centriq wins by 7% but the 8180 match it in performance. That's pretty good when you only have 24 real cores and the rest hyperthreaded cores.

However this is pretty amazing for someone that don't make x86 chips.

Where could one buy one of these? I've been looking around for a server I can run KVM on and several linux vm's, or playing with docker. I like the challenge of a new architecture

Another ARM server that wins it all on slides. Note all the rate benches and very similar results with having 6 channels each.

How did it go with Calexa and Cavium?

If Broadcom aka Avago takes over Qualcomm this server line is one of the first things to be cut. Just as they cut the Vulcan project.
