I snagged a 5.2ghz. Gotta have your CC info in clipboard and 0 hesitation on these kinds of things! It's overpriced, no argument, but I'm happy with this vs a 7820X @ 4.7ghz. Overpriced and undersupplied is the story of this launch in general.

really an impressive improvement over kaby lake when you take into account that they added two cores 5.2 ghz 1.4v kaby was top tier pretty much
 
Still a giant waste of money for a marginal gain of few hundred MHz and running over 1.4 volts on it is going to be super hard to cool. I guess if your a benchmark junkie I can see it, but other then that I question why.

Yup, let them fight over those. I just think the near-guaranteed 5.0GHz overclock is cool!

they are actually killer cpus for 3dmark benching, they beat ryzen at it and will beat stock or mild overclocked intel HEDT 8 core's as well at times all while costing the same or less, usually the latter. on the gaming performance end of things well we've seen the reviews same holds true. cooling wise yeah delidding is a near requirement if you want to get the most out of one while keeping it cool but thats kind of been the norm with intel cpus for some time now, the tools are cheap and the process is safe and easy.
 
it was sold out so fast i was typing password into my paypal then checkout page says sold out for both 5.3 and 5.2ghz.
for those want 4.8 to 4.9ghz.. just grab a retail unless you want to pay for delid service which in itself isn't bad.

makes you wonder what 10nm++ is capable of doing, probably add another 100mhz with 8 cores on that while having overall lowered power consumption.

I don't really feel like those overclock results are all that impressive when you consider the AVX offset. It feels like people not wanting to admit that they can't hit 5ghz and settling for 5ghz in anything not remotely demanding and 4.8ghz in everything else. I can get into windows just fine with 5ghz on my i7 8700K but the second I fire up prime95 and smallffts.. good luck. 90C+ and instability within seconds or Cinebench @ 5ghz. I have to crank the voltage to 1.4V+ and LLC 7 and I've delidded with a Kraken X62. If the AVX offset was limited to affecting synthetic benchmarks thats one thing, but my clocks were being throttled by the AVX offset in games I was not expecting, like PUBG/Heroes of the storm, etc. Which made me feel like it would be be better to just go for a lower overclock overall and not use the AVX offset at all, so you know where your clocks/performance were going to be.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the cpu overall, I just think that the media/reviewers went a little crazy and set the expectations sky high for what overclocks people should expect, similar to my experience with haswell.

u just gotta buy the highest binn 5.3ghz then when avx hits you get 5ghz, but i get your point. 10nm++ im waiting.

Are you certain you're seeing throttling due to AVX usage in games? That seems very strange to me. In a game, you usually solve your SIMD / "embarassingly parallel" problems by using the GPU, not the CPU. And is the CPU throttling actually affecting your speed in games? I'm not trying to be argumentative, this is just really surprising to me.

But even there, given how much work each AVX instruction is actually doing (replacing 4 or 8 traditional FP ops), it's still quite amazing to run at 4.8 MHz. The throughput is kinda nuts.
 
Yes, some games are legitimately triggering AVX offset, because they are really using some AVX instructions. This has been shown by a few guys testing over at overclockers.co.uk.

so what mobo to get for overclock? Was thinking Asrock extreme4, k6 or taichi? However I like MSI...

I re-enabled Chrome app, downloaded all the updates and now my account AND mobile coupon are working. Just waiting on my Groupon cards.

If newegg is trying to get people to like their mobile site/app then they failed, cuz this is garbage.

I'm deliberating between the Taichi and Gigabyte K7. The Extreme 4 is supposed to be very good, but the on board audio is pretty low end.

I believe extreme4 and Taichi share the same audio chipset. Since I don't need wifi, I might go for K6.

It's more that I just don't think its entirely accurate to say its a 5ghz overclock if in the most demanding situations its actually running at 4.8ghz (and as I said, a lot of games that aren't even that demanding but trigger AVX instructions thus the throttling). I'm more than happy that my CPU can run all cores/threads at 4.8ghz under any situation, just took a delid, watercooling and lots of voltage to get there. Which is why I roll my eyes when I see people claiming huge overclocks with equivalently huge avx offsets, just feels like it defeats the purpose a bit.

People always lie about OCs, it's simply how it goes.

However, this also extends to people's lies about OCs on previous chips.

14nm++ improvements are real.
