World of Warcraft Classic

I am but if its going to work and survive and have a healthy populations those things will have to be part of it, todays players who didnt play classic wont make it past level 30 and theyll go back to the current servers and youll have low pop and never fill a 40 man raid.

They aren't making wow classic because the newer players wanted it they are making it for the people that played it in the past that want it back. All those people on pirate servers, all the people who they lost because they made the game more main stream, and all those die hard fans that still play but want to get back to the golden age of wow. When community meant something and you weren't handed out gear like raids were going out of business.

Will those people stick with wow classic who knows. I know I would like to think I will. But I have a job and a life now, unlike when I was in highschool playing wow for 8-12hours a day on a week day. So we'll have to see.

I want weapon leveling.
I want hunters needing ammo.
I want the slower leveling.
I want the class specific quest lines (Druid forms, Paladin mount, etc).
I do not want LFG/LFR (it destroyed any sense of community and made instances face-rolls).
I do not want flying mounts.
I do not want multi-specs.
I will not miss the quest hubs.

Hopefully Blizzard is able to stay true to Vanilla, with necessary modernizations (graphics, stability, etc).
MMO developers should stay true to their vision. Many listen to the vocal minority and make changes at their request where the rest of the players who say nothing just leave because they don't like the changes. Instead, have a vision, stick to it, and ask for player feedback of existing systems rather than feedback for ways to change the game.

This will be the biggest hurdle I think. Most of the people who want Vanilla back are now of an age where they have families/work that will mean less time for raids.
I still have high hopes for it, but I wonder what will happen after a while if there's no new content. Or maybe it can take a tangent from the current state and add new content while not changing any play mechanics. Sort of a WoW 1.5.

They have to pick one or the other, and people have been yelling about straight up Vanilla WoW for a while. I think a real progression server will suffice nicely. In terms of WoW emulated servers, no one has been able to do a progression. It's either Vanilla, TBC, or WoTLK server. Playing through a shortened timeline, maybe a 6 month per expansion or something, would be fantastic. EQ2 had a voting system that would come up that would let the players dictate, stay in the current expansion, or move to next expansion. I thought it was kind of weak, I would rather see a fixed timeline for each individual expansion so you know exactly how long you have to max out before the next one hits.

In terms of the guys saying they can't stay with the old school grind having a real life now, it's true. I played on Nost and it was tough keeping up with my little brother who was working a part time job and playing a ton whereas I was only able to play 2-3 hours a day. Most of these classic server games now that come from the "old school" can't really cater to the casual - why do you think all the new MMO's are so carebear easy peasy max level in a couple dozen hours? It's funny too because a lot of those same people complain "this shit is too easy" - but if it were a long grind that required hundreds of hours, they probably wouldn't have bought it at all because they know they can't swing that kind of playtime.

Thats what I am saying (buried at end of first page) - we should have "Seasons" of one year where these expansions are re-released

I was hoping for something along those lines as well. Which i would think is possible since. They have a totally different team working on it.

I'm not a fan of adding expansions since then what's the point of having a vanilla server if your just going to fuck it up again with expansions. And I'm personally not a fan of restarting from scratch over and over. I think they would lose a lot of people if they did that.

I know ill be in this boat, id like vanilla, i like the idea but i dont have the time if its pure classic. without things like LFG and lower level mounts like we have now ill probably pass, or login once a week to burn off rested

Will this be release day Vanilla or day before BC Vanilla? That's a pretty big spread of changes and added content right there alone
I imagine they will use the current client or derivative thereof (for OS compatibility and security if nothing else)

I could see them keeping a few quality of life improvements like the modern add on APIs and perhaps tweaking a few in game costs/drop rates

b-but why

Simple. The act of running is more immersive, you spend more time seeing the details of the game world. You can't just bypass content easily by flying over it on a flight-path or running by it on a mount.

Yerp moving around the world super fast really takes you out of the world especially with flying mounts. it might as well be teleportation that takes longer. When you have to run around and interact with the world and people in it the game feels much more expansive and real, and you get the bonus of actual meeting people and having stuff happen when your out and about. which is one step closer to having an actual community on a server.

I started WoW in the closed beta, played hardcore raider as a paladin through BC. Then kind of switched to being a casual player for the last few xpacs. I come back for each new one, but I'm going to be sitting out WoW classic. My preferred class was shite then, forced to wear leather and cloth to heal. I don't miss buffing a 40 man raid every 2.5 minutes even if I did use pally power. I would love to be in my early 20s again playing the game, but I beyond that I don't have much else in the way of nostalgia for this.

Yes but why do you want to be forced to do that *again*?

Even in WoW today if you really want you can just... not use a mount

They're looking at a decent money maker here (I know, shock!). I'm thinking of them starting with classic servers with the same progression timeline as vanilla, and then adding other xpac servers as they go. After x number of months when the top guilds have downed KT, are all decked-out in T3 and have become bored, they can start again on BC. Other guilds can take their time and keep plugging away for as long as they want. I don't imagine there would be much desire to transfer the character you'd invested so much time in before (especially when quest greens are better almost immediately), but maybe an instant-60/70/80 etc as a paid option, or level another from scratch. You could still log into previous servers and own shit in BGs when the mood struck you. Each player can pick their favorite xpac and start or live entirely in that timeline. Seems like a winner.

Someone brought up the idea of re-releasing old expansion packs as new expansions.

For instance - Wow Classic Vanilla is released. Everyone levels up and has a good time. A couple years down the line, they release a separate Burning Crusades server with the ability to transfer your level 60 toon if you want. After a couple more years, release a Wrath of the Lich King expansion on another server with the ability to transfer your BC 70 toon to it. Charge like $20 for the expansion re-release and include the service as a part of the monthly $15 after that. Blizzard has a lot of opportunity to make some serious money. It also puts private servers out of business and makes everyone happy since they can stay in the expansion that they loved the most.

Eh, most of the expansion zones are relatively intact on live WoW. Character stats/abilities are different of course but I imagine demand drops off a cliff the closer you get to live

Immersion. WoW now is like eating your favorite meal as fast as possible, you cannot savor it. You cannot take your time and enjoy all the time and effort that went into preparing it, you only consume it.

Agreed. It's the same with the easy leveling. You cant stay in any of the zones long enough to play out the story lines as you are constantly leveling past them and moving on.

Now thats something I always did, complete all the story lines
In the current state it's so difficult, it seems like when you're half way through a zone you're so high of a level that mobs dont give you exp and/or everything is one-hit killed.
People end up skipping the last 25% of a zone to move on to the next one.

Might be important then to just try and focus on particular questlines to finish out. I hate leaving the last ones undone. Its been years since ive played, though.

Yeah im bumping a 2 year old thread...but this thread about the game that released 2 days ago finally and I don't see any other thread on it (I could be blind).

With that...anyone else playing Classic these past 2 days? I played for a few hours last night (Horde character) and so far enjoying it. Just got past the starter area and worked my way to Brill and about to hit the Underground City. I played very little of WoW back in 2005-2006, so going to play this thru out the fall and see what I missed back then.
