Hmm so i have a chance to buy a lightly used Rift w/ Touch Controller for $225.. im thinking of pulling the trigger. However i was eye balling the Windows Sets granted is it worth buying one of those newer sets for $400-$500 or at the price of $225 rift just good deal to grab?

Rift is still better imo as long as you don't mind the cords. The tracking works better and you get full native access to both the rift and steamVR library where as the windows don't even have steamVR yet.

I tried the windows vr system and it works ok, the tracking was decent but not nearly as good as my rift

I have not tried the Windows version. The rift I have and has been out for a while. It works great and at that price, I would jump on it. I won't buy any of the new VR stuff until it has been proven.

Rift has the software. For $225 w/ Touch, no question, go buy it. The only problem with going used is that you don't get the free games from buying new.

If I had the machine for VR (don't...just running a cheap laptop right now) and the money for it, I'd have bit on the rift I saw on CL for 300, at 225 it's really a no-brainer.

Rift. No-brainer.

The Windows Mixed reality headsets are dead on arrival. There's no launch content, none seemingly planned, and currently only work with windows store apps (seriously, what are they thinking).

I thought it was going to work with Steam also? Never checked into it, but others said it should.

Only for SteamVR titles that developers specifically add WMR support for. In other words, WMR headsets will not automatically work with SteamVR titles that already support Vive and/or Rift. Specific WMR HMD support would have to be tested and added on per-title basis.

The distinction is important because since WMR support will be left up to developers, I don't feel we'll see much of it happening. Two reasons. One, WMR is limited to Windows 10; many Steam customers are still on 7 and 8.1. Two, many developers are philosophically anti-Microsoft these days, due to MS's years of pro-AR, anti-VR rhetoric until they finally shelved Hololens. Further, they see Microsoft's VR bandwagon chasing as disingenuous - that MS is only hitching a ride with SteamVR until they get can their own ecosystem established - at which point they'd lock it down. I think we'll see VR developers ignore Microsoft VR anything for this reason.

Let's see... a working VR device with mature drivers and tons of available software to run on it for $225 vs. spending twice that for a MS Mixed Reality HMD with immature drivers and no current software library beyond what's available in the Windows app store. Ummm, that really isn't a tough choice, it's an obvious one for the Rift.

SteamVR support will eventually get there for the Windows "Mixed Reality" HMD offerings - but it will be late December or sometime early next year before that support becomes solid/stable. And the jury is still out on if any of them are really any better. The Odyssey HMD itself may be due to its far greater resolution, but all of them come with somewhat crappy controllers and inferior tracking, so it may be a wash.

There will be (already is I think) a wrapper to make it work as a Vive. I wouldn't be worried at all about it not working with steam games. That said, Rift has it all working now, so no reason to consider a WMR setup at that price unless you are planning to play on a laptop and want it to be portable.

They planned to have SteamVR compatibility working on launch of the first round of headsets, just didn't happen.

Uh that's not true at all. I've played Space Pirate Trainer on SteamVR w/ an Acer HMD, I even played Robo Recall through Revive on an Acer HMD. It's just an OpenVR driver for WindowsMR headsets.

SteamVR support is being released publicly next week: November 15th...

$225? Don't even hesitate, nab that Rift and Touch, and use the savings to get yourself an extra sensor or two for a proper room-scale setup.

This isn't even a matter of hardware right now, but one of software. The Rift will run pretty much anything you ask of it due to its time on the market.

I would not hesistate for $225 unless previous owner had herpes or something.

Going by early reports of the Samsung Odyssey, I would buy the Rift.

At best, it seems to be more a lateral move or very small upgrade. Given the added cost, I guess it depends which features are most important to you. Still is somewhat of a mixed bag - slight upgrade in some areas, with slight downgrades in others:
