LG 43UD79 Information?

From my experience with this monitor, I've had zero-flickering, but to answer your question you can set brightness to 100% and use Nvidia Control panel to adjust brightness up and down, I am using Brightness 54,
Contrast 70, RGB 50 34 9 and find this setting good for multi-purpose: work,films, games etc...this is a great monitor and those on the fence should try it for themselves and confirm!

In my case the flickering is the thing im aware of in this LG. I had a TV which flickered at 240hz and I had serious eye-straing+headaches but for example monitor at my work has 430hz (HP 24inch) and is not bothering me at all same as my home EIZOFS2434 but this one is flicker free 100%.

Hm that's a new's because other mentioned their uses PWM. Did you bought it recently? Maybe new ones has it improved. Did you installed drivers from LG website?
Still strange is LG taken out flicker safe on this one from their website.
 
Yes: recently bought, Yes: LG Driver installed, and I think the GPU may be the issue for "others", get recent Nvidia GPU (9 or 10 series) use INCLUDED Displayport cable and set for 10-bit, full range, 32-bit RGB in Nvidia Contol panel...if all that is done correctly then no problems...

I doubt that anyone who bought this monitor doesn't have at least gtx1060 or something similar but maybe:) But maybe the settings are important can't say. Anyway thanks very much for this test/answer.

If anyone could post your results who bought it recently I would appreciate it. I think it's possible too that newest production 43ud79 could have better firmware and might be flicker safe trully as your's is.
 
No problem, I've never used an LG and have no affiliation other than owning this monitor but I joined this forum just for the purpose of praising the 43ud79, it's the best monitor I've ever owned and coming from a 24 inch, then a 30 inch and now this 43 inch 4K, it is the perfect size / resolution for my needs hence my enthusiasm for it!

Edit: What really puts it over the top is the Remote and very good speakers!

Im glad you are happy with this monitor! Back to settings you mentioned... Did you turned ON Ultra HD settings on monitor?
 
Has anyone tried using the Mac or Windows OSC (OnScreen Control) software to update the firmware for the monitor?

According to this japanese page dated 21 July, "Distortion occurs on the [Monitor] screen, it will be dark for 3 to 5 seconds (43UD79-B) _ Firmware update". I experience this bug a couple of times each week, though it is more like a one or two second blink.

Apparently you have to connected to the USB-C port on the monitor for the firmware update.

Yes, via LG software. Today I was offered the new firmware, but I need the USB-C cable to connect the monitor to the PC and I still don`t have it.
 
I used a USB 2.0 to USB-C cable. The monitor came with a USB 3.0 male - USB-C female adapter, which I did not use.

The updater asks for admin authority, like the web page says. Clicking 'details' shows it is flashing file
images/Scaler/43UD79_RTD2797_V3.20_APP_update_FE24_rev7570_170814.bin

After clicking OK, it said 'the monitor software update was interrupted ...' The updater didn't work with the cable plugged into a USB 2.0 port on the PC.

I rebooted the PC, and also had to unplug (electric power) the monitor each time, otherwise it would remain blank. Tried the update twice.

The same USB 2.0 cable plugged into a USB 3 port on the same PC worked. The update dialog shows a progress bar, about 5 mins to complete.

kawan have you tested it on different brightness level does it disapeear with higher values ?

The brightness, whether 0 or 100, made no difference to the PWM test. Weird, as you say .. could be something else wrong that I don't know about. GTX 1050, DisplayPort, Win10 1709, Chrome.

In most cases I have seen increasing the brightness made PWM working less/stop at 100% on other monitors. You can't see any change in lines between different brightness levels? How many lines do you see?

The weird thing is brianbrook says he has no PWM at all.
 
I could be misunderstanding the PWM test. I did this method from the tftcentral web site - pan a camera with shutter at 1/20 sec.

By the way, win10 1709 messes up the color - dark areas are extra dark/dim. I could not fix it as this article said. Instead I used
nvidia control panel -> display -> adjust desktop color settings = use nvidia settings radio button (used the default settings on the sliders)

I just updated my monitor's firmware using the On Screen Control software. LG definitely improved the refresh rate on the LED backlighting. Previously, if I focused on the side scrolling line it would split into four distinct columns. Now, it's an even gradient/wider grey column. I have several Dell monitors that are non-PWM and to my eye it seems pretty close (if not exactly the same).

RGB: 49 33 6 - exactly 6500K white point. Brightness is 20%, Contrast 70, Gamma 2.2 (Gamma mode 2 )

I think you confuse refresh rate, response time and PWM frequency. Which one is it?

Thanks christal, I was pretty close...you had Red at 51 on a previous post though? also when you say brightness at 20% I assume you mean 20 and for me that feels really low...I prefer 50 or at least that's what I got used to but won't that throw off the 6500K calibration? Overall I'm really loving this monitor!

post #288: I use Custom mode, in which all settings are available for fine tuning, I also made custom ICC profile with the calibration device for D65, color temperature 6500K, gamma 2.2, brightness around 60 nits, and settings for the color channels R= 51, G=33, B=6.
 
I have seen that full screen graphics glitch before,... I installed the firmware update today hoping to fix this glitch (even though it has only happened a couple times since June) and it has definitely affected the PWM rate. On the blurtrail test I used to see 5 distinct thick grey lines moving, and now it looks like one fuzzy grey line.

Installing the firmware was a real PITA though, the Mac version of onscreen didn't work at all, kept giving an error that the firmware update was interrupted requiring a complete power cycle of the monitor and computer to try again. I installed the windows version on an old junk laptop I had sitting around and it worked right away though, an old USB2 host to the USB-C port on the monitor.
 
May i ask who has used either the Spyder5 (any model) or the x-rite (ColorMunki or i1Display Pro) to calibrate their LG 43" yet?

I've just bought one in Europe. Apart from the noticeable darker left bottom corner (in case of uniform white background), I haven't noticed anything unusual so far. Right after I sat up the monitor, I upgraded the firmware. Haven't got headache or eyestrain so far. It's also possible that I'm just not sensitive for flickering. Feel free to ask, I don't have special cameras, but maybe I can help with your questions.
 
Like many, my USB hub in the LG (i.e. the USB-3 ports) are not functioning at all.

I have tried 3 different different USB A to C cables, from two separate host machines, none of them recognize the hub (on the LG) exists.

Has anyone found a solution to fix this issue?

I saw one of these in the local Fry's. It's pretty damn awesome for the price. However, I'd pay a bit more and get a Samsung KS8000 or something. You get HDR and a larger screen out of it as well as the option for a curved display. The LG is pretty nice, but if I'm going to be limited to 4K@60Hz, I think it's reasonable to just go with a 4K TV and get some additional functionality. However, I can see a need for the built in KVM feature. I contemplated it for that purpose.
 
Just a few note for the monitor. I have been using it for four days now. I was concerned regarding the PWM frequency. I captured four lines in UFO blur trail test with 1/25 shutter which means 25*4 = 100Hz. Although this method might not be accurate(prad.de measured 119Hz), this frequency seems low. Surprisingly the number of lines did not change when the brightness was set to 0 or 40 or 100. I have been using cheap TN panels on a daily basis and never bothered me. I do not intend to use this monitor more than 4-5 hours in a row. Do I have to worry about headaches or eyestrains in this case?

Apart from the PWM, everything looks fine.

Nothing to do but give it a try. PWM bothered me on my JU6700. I'd get headaches after long periods of time. I have no issues being on my KS8500 for 10+ hours a day when necessary. It's just something you will have to see for yourself. Some people are more sensitive to it than others.

I am prepared to sell it when it becomes uncomfortable. Although I cannot send it back, LG provides three years warranty, so I think I will be able to sell it. I find it disgusting how manufacturers hide the flickering frequency and backlight technology. Furthermore, the previously posted Japanese site no longer have the sentence that stated a higher (480Hz) PWM after the firmware update.

I believe someone in this thread mentioned how the firmware update did increase PWm frequency considerably. Also, the Japanese review site does include the statement regarding 480HZ:

Can you please link the site? I couldn't find this sentence.
 
I can confirm that a firmware update increases the PWM-frequency to 480 Hz

Before the firmware update I took this image

The exposure time was 1/13 s and you can count 9 lines, which means a PWM-frequency of 13*9 Hz = 117 Hz

After the firmware update I took this image

The exposure time was 1/14 s and you can count 34 lines, which means a PWM-frequency of 14*34 Hz = 476 Hz

If you take the errors into account the measurements of the Japanese site are correct!

But the Problem I described here was NOT solved by the update.
 
Thank you, guys. 480Hz does not sound that bad anymore. I haven't got eyestrain or a headache from the monitor.

I haven't seen the pixel error you have. I will play something on the weekend and check if my monitor suffers from this issue, too.
 
So, I thought I ordered this monitor but accidentally got the 43**MU**79-B. I can't tell the different but LG's site lists the **MU** model in their business section (with a $2150 !!!! MSRP)… From everything I can find, the main difference is 8ms GTG (vs 5ms GTG on the **UD**) and 3-year warranty (vs 1-year on the **UD**). From everything I've read, the 43UD79-B is fine for gaming, but playing PUBG, I've noticed some slight ghosting (more than on my previous panels, even some 60Hz Dell 1440p ones, and even on my 22'' 1080p 75Hz one from Viewsonic). Is that true on the UD as well?

I just want to find out if I'm missing something massive and I should look into returning this 43MU79-B and getting the 43UD79-B… FWIW, my use case is 80% productivity (code, web, etc) and 20% (or less) gaming.

Thoughts?
