The Evil Within 2

The Evil Within 2 shines on PS4 - but Xbox One and PC fall short

both console builds are big improvements over their TEW1 counterparts, but the PC version genuinely needs attention...with the right hardware, it can produce better results than either console release, but the game hitches and stutters when targeting 60fps, a state of affairs that persists no matter what hardware we threw at it...

It makes me wonder if anyone even bothers to f****** to test a game before they release it. I guess why bother doing that when people are willing to pay you 60 bucks to test it for you...

I had no performance issues at all on PC on max settings, it was locked at 60fps 99% of the time with no stuttering or hitching. Though I uninstalled this after a few hours in. I loved everything about it, until I ran into the same issue that I did in MGSV:The Phantom Pain, which is "stealth" being a key part of the gameplay but it has no quicksave ability. Autosaves are too far apart at times, and having to replay entire areas gets old after a while, especially for stealthy gameplay which can be a long session of time without an autosave.

I only paid 35 bucks for this so I'm not too annoyed as I'll probably replay it in the future sometime, but from now on I'm no longer buying any stealth game that does not have quicksaves built in. My fault for not checking first.

I’m not terribly far in yet, but I am enjoying it. I’m not finding it quite as creepy as the first one; the mental hospital was more unnerving than Union IMO. I’m playing on Nightmare setting and finding that I can craft plenty of handgun ammo, at least for now. I remember in the first one having only a handful of rounds and picking up 1 or 2 here and there as I went. That being said, I have exclaimed “f*** this whole game” a few times, in a good way. Like when you’re running away from something bad and jump over a fence to try and lose them, only to land on another one, waking them up. You keep running and turn a corner, to run into something worse...

As opposed to being cracked in a matter of a day or two anyway?

Exactly, and then the lost sales of legitimate customers on top of that BECAUSE of it? I think they did the right thing, and are probably better off for it.

It only causes lost sales due to the amount of FUD that gets spread online.

Maybe partially. I still don't like added layers of DRM in my software if it can be avoided. I pay for mine, I use Steam, so my login and good-standing account should be enough. Anyone going to the trouble of pirating the game these days likely wouldn't have bought it anyway. When you can get the game instantly on Steam, or pick up a key for close to half-price from a key dealer, it's really more trouble to pirate if you're someone who actually would buy the game. Most companies seem to pull the "protection" after a few weeks anyway, but I really don't see how it's helping them in the first place if it gets cracked in a couple of days anyway. Why do it?

I just beat the Evil Within 2 on nightmare difficulty, it took me around 21 hrs. Overall I really enjoyed it, the first third is good, the middle third loses some momentum as the environment doesn't change much and your mostly doing the same things as the first third, but the final third is super strong. It has one of the best endings for a video game that I played recently.

Overall I give it an 8/10, carried by the strong third act and ending. A definite must buy for survival horror fans.

The game does a good job of making the NPC's memorable, they actually inject emotion and life into the game and are not just mobs standing around with an exclamation point over their heads handing out fetch quests. You really only see that stuff over the final third of the game though.

Also, the game does a good job of introducing a lot of different enemy types and bosses to keeps thing feeling fresh. That was a problem I felt Resident Evil 7 suffered from, it had good bosses but the mold monsters were too similar for my tastes.

Nice, thanks for the review!

I will pick this up on sale - haven't even finished the first one yet. Did you play it and if so, how do you think it compares to the sequel?

I bought this game a few days ago and so far I'm not really enjoying it as much as the first one. It's just not as eerie as the first game. I just wish Tango would use a different engine instead of IDTech5 which still has its issues today. The performance on this engine has always been poor and I thought this game was poorly optimized, the GPU usage would not go above 85% as I noticed and would stay around 75% most of the time. The texture popping is still present though its not as bad as RAGE and Wolfenstein which had noticeable texture popup.

I also finished the first game on the hardest (not Akuma) initial difficulty. I really enjoyed the first game as well, the main difference is that the first game is a much more linear experience. With the exception of a couple of chapters you are constantly moving forward and experiencing new environments in EW1. The first 2/3 of EW2 is more of an open hub experience where you can explore a small town much like Chapter 3 of the first game. The last third is more like the first game where it's mostly linear.

The story is much better in 2, in the first it was very obscure and difficult to follow what was going on. For EW 2 it's more plainly laid out and pays off pretty nicely in the end if your at all invested in the characters (which after 40+ hrs of 1 and 2 I was).

EW1 had a lot of technical difficulties, much more than 2. There were major issues with sub par frame rates, frame timing issues, ugly letterboxing and small FOV. These are mostly fixed in EW2, although the fog filters and such are still there which drains a lot of the color from the environment and makes things look more dated than it should.

EW2 runs great on my setup and gsync is keeping everything feeling silky smooth. In the end I feel they are about on par with each other, the first has more varied locations and a more focused, linear experience. The 2nd gives you more freedom to explore and a better story with a much better ending than the first game.

is Evil Within 2 more like the first game's DLC where stealth is more viable?

I'd guess half of my kills were stealth kills. So I'd say it's a viable way of completing the game, on higher difficulties it's probably the best way. There's a whole skill tree devoted to stealth and a new arrow type that acts as a smoke bomb. The more open environments means you can avoid a lot of combat if you want. Though there will still be forced combat situations and arenas you have to complete.

It's only 29.99 on CD keys now bargin since it just came out like two weeks ago.
