Massdrop Vast: 35" VA 3440x1440 100Hz Freesync $549

This actually looks pretty good but I am wondering if they have to have overdrive on MAX to achieve that 2ms response time.

Quoted response times are garbage anyway, especially for VA panels. The Asus Z35 had a 4ms one but the real one was like 9ms even with maximum OD at 200hz. I'd be very surprised if this one is much faster. And it'll still have the VA problem of >50ms black to grey (ie shadow) transitions that cause extreme smearing in dark scenes.
 
I saw it but I'm waiting for better due out this quarter. Acer and Asus are to have some nice ones.
 
VA and gaming just doesn't mix IMO why highhertz gaming marketed monitors are a bit of an oddball to me. Sure contrast is nice but performance not so.

Which ones are you watching for specifically?

I’m interested in OLED or quantum dots, gsync 2, and HDR, though HDR is of lesser importance to me. I don’t need, or even want 1000 nits of brightness to blind me from my monitor in my dark basement theater room where I game. I do appreciate contest. But contrast in the manner of OLED vs contrast in the manner of a floodlight.

Looking for the 3440x1440 models Q4 2017. The Acer X35 I think is one of them. I get confused with all these model numbers anyway suppose to be really high Hz refresh. Also Q1 2018 they are releasing two new 4k models but I don't think I'll wait for them.

X35 was delayed to match, so it's Q2 2018 now.
 
Crap! Figures it'd just be my luck. Well thanks for that info. I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer.

AUO has a reputation for flakier panels than their competition. Hopefully they're able to use the time lost due to whatever element is causing the delays on their next gen panels to also get them more consistent than previous generations have been. I also hope one of the other panel OEMs has similar high end panels in work but is just keeping quiet until they've got all the bugs worked out.
 
At this point any new freesync monitor should really meet freesync 2 specs to be taken seriously.

Are there currently even any decent Freesync2 monitors? The only ones I know of are the newer Samsungs and they're known for not having enough local dimming zones and being trash for HDR.

Yeah because Freesync is so relevant with AMD putting out such garbage low performance/high wattage GPU's and selling all of 5 of them to reviewers before the rest of their stock goes to miners.
Maybe one day, long after Vega is a bad memory, AMD will be able to compete in the high perf GPU market, and be able to push such high res monitors, but there is currently no purpose to putting Freesync on a monitor this high res with a 100Hz refresh rate other than because it's a free spec sheet tick box.
Massdrop really should offer a $25-50 more expensive G-sync option. Sure G-sync costs more to implement and go through validation, but it shouldn't cost much more once they scale up production and they would still be hands down the highest value G-sync monitor on the market. The real problem isn't just cost though, it's the jackasses at Nvidia holding such a tight grip on their precious G-Sync market. Artificially limiting market options to keep prices high like they're the freaking diamond industry. It's anti-consumer and instead of everyone ignoring it in the hopes of not getting kicked out of the club, they should be getting called out for it.

The Vast 35" costs about HALF its Gsync competitors. That is $200 less than from the price gap described on the blind test, made at exactly the same resolution. If AMD was a value winner on that blind test, the Vast just increases its value.
 
I know it's a necro- but did anyone here grab a vast? Is the 100hz native or overclock? Does it play nice with Nvidia cards?
