Five of the six major Hollywood studios have joined forces to make digital movie collecting easier than ever: Movies Anywhere, a free app and website digital locker service launching tonight, is backed by four top digital retailers and content from Walt Disney (including Pixar, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm), Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Film, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros. Entertainment -- a combined library of more than 7,300 digital movies.

Starting tonight, consumers can download a free Movies Anywhere app, create an account and link to any of the four digital retailers. The service will automatically populate consumers’ digital library from any of those four retailers on Movies Anywhere. Consumers can immediately stream or download any film from their Movies Anywhere library. They can also buy new digital movies on the app through Movies Anywhere retailers and redeem codes from DVDs or Blu-ray Discs they have purchased to gain immediate access to more digital movies. Starting next year, physical discs will feature Movies Anywhere branding.

But I do have some concerns about the future of all of this.

Hollywood loves re-selling shit over and over again to consumers. Records to Tapes to CD's to Streaming and Digital Downloads. VHS to DVD to Bluray to Steaming and Digital Downloads.

I can actually see this becoming a huge problem for Hollywood as these digital libraries grow and that 'new movie / audio format' becomes less and less of a source for income.

What kind of bs will Hollywood pull the reign in these well organized vast libraries people will eventually have. Sorry, but DVD movies were good enough for many many years.

1080p will be good enough for many many years. 4k? Yeah who the hell here really thinks 8k movies are going to be any better? I guess I just answered my own question. Consumers

It may use BitTorrent on the backend but I'm referring to the use of programs like µTorrent, Limewire, Frostwire, BitTornado, etc. 95% of all things downloaded with those programs is pirated content.

I have around 700+ DVD's and around 550ish Bluray's. Somewhere, 110'ish laser discs along with a handful of VHS sets like Star Wars, old rare out of print concerts, Das Boot limited edition stuff and 1 digital download "Transformers" that Google gave all of us a handful of years ago.

One thing I refuse to do is let someone just casually and randomly assume others are pirates. Sure I pirate somethings but if I use it I always pay. I just bought Steamworld Dig 2 after beating the pirated copy because it was pretty damn good. Another game I am currently playing is Battle Chasers: Nightwar. I will soon buy that and add it to my Steam Library of over 325 games. Many of which I've never played.

I also see a lot of movies. I have the $10 movie pass and use it to get my monies worth. I admit I have a REAL problem paying for movies over and over and over again. If I pay to see a movie I personally consider myself having paid in full and have no problem owning that movie again.

Normally I wouldn't pay a comment like this no mind. However, just a friendly reminder, never assume anything about anyone here or in your real life day to day. I sense you're one of those people that walk around silently judging others. Me steaming movies or anyone for that matter doesn't make that person a pirate.

Oh and btw, I buy many of my bluray movies wholesale for dirt cheap just like Best Buy does. Anyone can if you're smart enough. I know many of you guys just go into Best Buy and Walmart and throw your money down but I don't and suspect a lot of other people don't as well. Also do a search for 'Bluray lots' on eBay, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.

There are many "CO-OP's" out there that have many members that buy in bulk wholesale. Find one and join it. I get most of my new Bluray movies for $4 to $5 a pop new. Sometimes a lot cheaper.

So plug ins, which by default are not part of the base code and have nothing to do with kodi, is the reason why kodi is synonymous with piracy?

I think your view on things is way too narrow at times and way to over broad. Kodi was called XBMC or xbox media center before it was renamed to kodi, mostly because it could be run on just about every platform and not just on the xbox which it was first developed to work on.
It's main purpose is to provide video codexes and playback. The plugins feature was added to allow third party developers create new functionality like adding in streaming radio stations, etc.

Because it was optimized really well and works on systems with crappy specs, it's pretty much the go to video player and stream player. There are tons of legitimate uses of it beyond some piracy plug ins which have to be manually added and don't come installed normally.

The idea that piracy hurts those on the cast list is very silly. Most of those people don't earn residuals from the sale of the movies anyways, they're already paid way in advance. If the movie is a good movie, it'll make multiples of the cost to make it. If it's a crappy movie, it doesn't matter how much piracy exists, it's not going to make back the money spent to make it.

Do you think those little people get paid more based on the success of the movie? They get paid for the job they did and not a cent more. I love going to the movie theater and watching movies but at the same time I don't like content being gardenwalled off in a billion different services. I won't pay a monthly fee to all the streaming services for small pieces of content (which I guess is what this whole topic is trying to address). If it isn't on Amazon prime video or Netflix, I will pirate it. On the other hand, I might consider buying more physical media for 4k BluRays to avoid the huge file sizes and also because I question the true "4k streaming" quality even on netflix in comparison.

edit: FWIW I have about 100 blu-rays that I have ripped into my Plex server and about the same amount pirated.

Kind of a silly argument. Are you saying movies can be done without the "grunts" working? If so, please feel free to point out the unnecessary jobs in a typical movie. I have a feeling that all the positions are necessary and that most of the roles have set values associated with them. I'd be kinda surprised if there wasn't labor unions dealing with movie labor.

Recent example:
I have cable, but forgot to set the DVR to record the premier of a new series I wanted to watch.
No problem, I'll just login to the channel's web site using my cable TV account.
Try to play the show, and it starts with multiple commercials.
Finally get through the commercials (no skipping), and start watching the show. Quality is poor, with significant blocking during action scenes.
5 minutes in there are more commercials. hit pause and I see there are twice as many commercial breaks as the broadcast version.
At this rate it's going to take well over an hour to watch the poor quality streaming show.

So I do a quick search, find the show in full high quality 1080p, download it in 5 minutes, and watch the show uninterrupted.

There is something really wrong when pirated shows are better quality and easier to watch than the legal shows I'm paying for.

Think this is the point of piracy at least part of it. It's more than getting something for free, often times, it's the only real solution like the one you mentioned.

Commercials are getting more and more invasive. We had Google TV service along side our Google Fiber Internet service and the commercials got so bad we literally were forced to stop watching any content at all.

Years ago I had an Amiga 500, then an Amiga 2000 then 1200. It was impossible to buy software. I couldn't even order it. i did manage to buy some games but it was not an easy task. Long story short, my hand was forced.

Umm...No. Not remotely true. As much as you prattle on about the "grunts" in Hollywood you seem to know incredibly little about the movie industry. Hollywood unions are incredibly powerful. Big movies are required to use union workers for everything possible. Most TV shows use union workers for most things. A single union striking in Hollywood grinds things to a halt and makes life hell for studios. The WGA strike about a decade back caused massive delays and cost the industry a crap load of money. Even the threat of a strike in Hollywood is usually enough to get things rolling. A lot of the smaller guilds don't go that route since they're demands tend to avoid asking for bonus pay for workers based on movie performance. If the ATA ever decided to strike the entire industry would be fucked as the ATA represents a lot of the big, and small, talent agencies.
