If the motherboard has front USB 3.1, but the case support USB 3.0, what speed do I get?

what is the speed depends upon? The socket on the motherboard?

or the USB slot at the case?

the chipset of the contoller, then the cable.

thanks, but what is the different between a USB 3.1 cable, vs. a USB 3.0 cable from any PC case manufacturer?

First, is your motherboard advertising "USB 3.1 gen 1", or "USB 3.1 gen 2'?

"USB 3.1 Gen 1" is exactly the same the USB 3.0, so you'll get the same 5Gb/s speed regardless of what the case's front USB ports are (assuming they're at least "3.0", of course).

If you motherboard has "USB 3.1 Gen 2", then it depends on what your case's port are. If it's a hub type of device (e..g a 9 in 1 media bay with USB3 ports), it'll be limited to 5Gb/s. If it's just sockets with wires going into them, then you should be able to get 10Gb/s since there's no difference physically between USB3.0/3.1g1 and USB3.1g2's cabling, as long as the cable length is less than 1m (though I'm not sure if that limit the port to device cable length, or if that limit also counts the internal cable's length).

BTW, USB-C doesn't necessarily apply to any of this.

Oh, and USB 3.0 was renamed to USB 3.1 Gen 1.

I'm looking into the above motherboard, gigabyte x299

it says "Front & rear USB 3.1 gen 2 Type-C"

since it's type C, how do we determine w/ the deal is?

and I don't see any internal USB connector that says 3.1 on it, eventhough the Feature page says so. There is an internal USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 for the front panel. And there is a USB 3.1 TYPE C header on the motherboard, but that can't be for the front panel.

As to the case, it's a Jonsbo MOD1

I circled the 3.1 Type C connector,

that case you linked will be using the standard 3.0 header right above the one I circled.

I see that, and that's what I wrote on the above, but that's more of an external connector. The wiring coming out of the front panel are internal connector x 2, usb 2, and usb 3

That's not an external connector. It's a USB-C header. USB-3.0/3.1 Type A/B ports only have nine pins So a two-port header would only have 18 pins (maybe 20 for keying). USB-C has 24 pins and is reversible, so it requires a different type of header.

The two USB3.0 headers are also USB3.1 (gen1) headers since there is no difference between the two. Your front panel ports will run at 5Gb/s.

oh, I didn't know they make such a gadget. That's good to know. thanks for the info. In that case, I'll skip this motherboard

I could be (and frequently am) mistaken but anything USB 3.x Gen 1 will be 5Gb/s. You'll only get 10Gb/s with USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C connections so anything with a Type A port will be 5Gb/s. You will need to find a case (or mod your Jonsbo with something like what ryan_975 linked above) with a Type C port on the front. The Gigabyte motherboard you linked (and many other newer motherboards) will give you the option to use either or both.

they have USB Type A Gen 2 ports, it is maroon colored on this ROG board,

I stand corrected... sort of. Yes some newer boards come with USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type A ports on the rear I/O panel. I have not seen any that extend this capability to the front panel connectors, which is what the OP is looking for. I have a new Asus Strix Z270 G Gaming mATX board for a new build I'm starting. It has the standard 20 pin USB 3.0 FP header and a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C FP connector and USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type A and Type C on the rear panel. Don't think you'll find Gen 2 Type A FP connectors on any Z170 or Z270 boards. Maybe on the Z370 or Z390? I suppose you could hack a loopback to the rear panel but... why?

If you want front panel Gen 2 Type A, you could opt for this,
https://www.asus.com/Motherboard-Accessory/USB-31-FRONT-PANEL/

Only drawback is that it doesn't use the new Gen2 mobo header, but uses SATA Express.

Honestly, I don't see a real need for Type A Gen 2 on the front panel.
Interesting product - must have a USB controller chip inside. Plugs into the SATA Express to utilize the PCIe lanes instead of plugging into a PCIe slot on the MB.

Agreed! While I'm sure there is a product out there somewhere that uses a Gen 2 Type A port everything I've seen that is Gen 2 is Type C. And some stuff (like my phone) is Type C but not Gen 2. But I do wish everything Type A would just go away. It was a better connector type than the DB9 back in the mid 1990's (wow, it's really been over 20 years since USB was first developed!) but now with the Type C connector available I wish everything would just magically convert overnight to that connector. Oh well, one can dream...

wait a second, why does it has to be type c?

I thought USB 3.1 Gen 2 TYPE A & C are both 10 Gb/s?

it is, did you see my pic I posted above?
The issue is there probably won't be any front panel USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type A, there doesn't need to be since the Type C connector is superior.

If the case you choose doens't have Type C on the front, you could buy one of these and mod the case,

Come on Happy, keep up! :D See post #14.

My real question is why a 10Gb/s Type A port is so important to you? Do you have some device that uses it? I'd like to know what it is.

The thing is, the other end will be a Type C. There will be no Gen 2 devices with anything but a Type C connection (except Apple maybe, lol).

I have some major backup to do. I don't have any 3.1 motherboard right now, I'm thinking of getting that MSI Z270. And I want to get that Silverstone adapter that convert a SSD to a USB 3.1 thumb drive.

http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=612

but as you can see, they sell TYPE A only

for more details, it's in this thread

Sorry Happy! I saw that thread the other day and watched the video. Even looked at the product page. Completely failed to notice that the device claims USB 3.1 Gen 2 speed. So there you have it - a Gen 2 device that uses a Type A connector! Unfortunately there is still the problem of no motherboards (that I am aware of) that have a Gen 2 Type A front panel connector. You MIGHT be able to get the full 10Gb/s speed using the cable the ryan linked to in post #9 along with this adapter from Best Buy. The description for the adapter says "Transfer speeds up to 5Gbps ensure rapid response times" but I can't think of any reason that it would not work just as well at 10 Gb/s. It's inexpensive so it would be at least worth a try.

However there is something else to take into consideration. That Silverstone device only works with SATA M.2 drives and therefore limited to 6 Gb/s - at best you are only going to see maybe a 15% performance boost with Gen 2 over Gen 1. Might cut a 2 hour file transfer down to an hour and 40 minutes.

that's an excellent point. I never thought about that. It's too much work. I'll just use the rear panel 3.1 port and leave it at that. thanks everyone

It is interesting that you posted that video. I saw that video shortly after it was posted and thought it was a good idea and he did a neat job of it. A couple of months later after I had finished my new build I thought about doing the same mod to my case. I picked up a similar cable from Amazon for about $20 but I haven't taken the time to install it yet. My case it the Thermaltake Core X2 and it has a "swappable" (for lack of a better word) front I/O panel. As it ships it has the I/O panel on the left side of the case but you can "swap" it with a blank panel on the right side of the case if you need the I/O on the right which I did. There is not really any room on the I/O panel to add the connector but the blank panel is a clean slate! Plenty of space to add that USB Type C connector and any other switches, buttons, or connectors I might need. Just need to get around to doing it.

So what did you finally end up doing? Pics?

when I went to newegg, all they have is the above Type C, hardly any Type A w/ USB 3.1

So I thought for USB 3.1 Teal, I have to get MS09 from silverstone and be done w/ it

Reading all your comments, just makes me want to buy a new rig for no reason. *sigh* You people are good at making me lose money from my wallet!

Dark Base 700 has a USB 3.1 at the front

on unrelated matter, for that dual PSU case, what's the point?

I am changing all the front panel ports on my Coolermaster Cosmos 2 case to USB 3.0 (+ Type C + HDMI passthrough) so I naturally came across the issue of "what the hell do I connect" to this USB 3.0 Gen 2 motherboard connector.

Well after researching it there is a motherboard header cable to USB 3.0 Gen 2 Type ports but it was going for a ridiculous price (60 Euros + Shipping) so I skipped it for a type c port connection. I don't remember where I saw it though.

I would have got it if there was indeed a need for it but it seems that there are no devices using it and even if I need it my motherboard has such a connector at the back.
