The new Star Trek series, Discovery, begins streaming today on CBS All Access: here’s a look at the new title sequence, which forgoes space for something artsy. Discovery takes place 10 years before the original "Star Trek" show from the 1960s.

Unlike title sequences for previous Star Trek shows, which usually take place in space with some degree of narration, the "Discovery" sequence takes a blueprint-like approach -- showing outlines of ships, space suits and guns that fill in with color and detail as the sequence plays. Particles on this canvass ebb and flow, forming a hand making the Vulcan salute among other designs.

As much as I would love Star Trek to have a successful TV series (Enterprise was canceled too early as well). I hope this experiment with CBS All Access is an epic failure. A majority of people have "cut the cord" for a reason. People only care about a handful of shows and don't want to pay $150 a month to watch them. Using 1970 TV plans for streaming services isn't going to bring more customers, it's going to drive them away. No one is going to pay $7-15 a month on 9 different streaming services from TNT/TBS/CBS/HBO/Stars/Showtime/Netflix/Amazon Prime etc. We need 1 or 2 unified streaming services, and that's it. Same goes with gaming platforms, we don't need Origin, Battlenet, Uplay, Sega Launcher, Bethesda Launcher, Microsoft Store, etc when we have Steam. All of this is already more fragmented than the Android ecosystem, and that's a mess in itself for developers. This isn't competition, it's a disaster. It needs uniformity.

There's two sides to this:

For: Yes, it's a pain in the ass, and like you said, people only have so much money to go around. Plus things can go more efficiently when it's all under one roof.

Against: If you really want to eliminate all competition so it's just one provider, that's not capitalism. You may as well nationalize the service then if it's considered vital enough that only provider should be operating. Once you have only one company running show, it becomes utterly ripe for abuse. Sometimes it happens right away, sometimes it takes a few years, but it's enormous vulnerability and everyone is caught with their pants down once it happens when you have a monopoly in control of one market.

Also comparing this to game services isn't a fair one. Those don't cost additional money for each one. It's less of a convenience, but you don't have to pay $20 to use Steam, $20 to use Origin, $20 to use Uplay, etc. You buy the game and they distribute it their own way.

Okay, still no ability to just pay for a series by itself... well, good luck with your shitty service.

I do have other things to do with time, like argue about CPU capabilities on the internet.

That sounds less compelling, now that I've written it out.

Ugh. That ship is stupid-looking with the holes in the hull. Second, why are they using a form of the Enterprise shirt logo? It was clearly established right in TOS that at that point, every ship had its own logo. I wonder whether that was ignorance or retcon?

Removed, apparently. In Canada it's available on satellite, cable and internet for cord cutters.

I think it's just a big money grab. Since they can't get more money from the cable providers, never mind the fact that they make a ton in advertising, they think they can milk the Star Trek fans. Well they can just eat a fat dick! I'm not paying them a damn thing. I already pay for cable and Hulu/Netfix. That's enough!

I agree up to a point.

I do not want a single all powerful service to have everything because there should be competition and different services can have different primary focuses. My biggest issue is the stupidity of services being started with only exclusivity in mind. A recent example is the Disney service to be started. They're pulling at least some of their content from other services to only have that content on their own exclusive service. That's where it becomes a problem. I don't care if they have their own service; I do have a problem with them pulling all the content they do have with other services to have it exclusively on their own.

I have a similar complaint with quite a few of the digital game stores. One of the biggest reasons I didn't play Mass Effect 3 until several months ago is because it was exclusive to Origin. I already had Mass Effect 1 and 2 on Steam. I simply didn't want to have another service just for Mass Effect 3 because EA is being a dick and wants all of their newer games on their service only. It's the exclusive effect I really hate. I don't care if EA has their own service, more power to them for it. I just don't want to have that service being the only place to purchase the games. What I ended up doing was subbing to the EA subscription service for one month and got my playtime out of Mass Effect 3 that way. There's practically nothing else on Origin that I care about so I have no reason to get anything else from them and I hate dealing with multiple services. In effect, EA lost out money from me because they only got $5 off me. If they'd just had Mass Effect 3 on Steam, they would have gotten more money from me buying it years ago at a higher price even after Steam takes its cut of the purchase price.

The only two game services/stores I care about are Steam and GOG. They do the same thing, sell games, but they aren't the same service. There are a ton of games on GOG you won't find practically anywhere else because they are older. Also, GOG is all about no DRM on any of the games. The focus of each service is different.

Actually, it's a bit different with the PC app store/launcers - they're free. You only pay (generally once) for the software you want, and if you aren't using that software, there is no need to have the launcher loaded. I HAVE Origin - I certainly don't keep it always running (I've already beaten Andromeda :)).

Having different places to buy games brings competition and it does not cost you to use each service. Streaming services do cost for each one though, and that is why I only have one: Netflix. Tried Hulu but a lot of stuff is missing and then I also tried Amazon Prime but most things require that you rent them individually, or at least the things I wanted to see.

The ship is just fine, it is not a Constitution class vessel, after all.

Don't believe I am saying this. Hope this bombs. This is getting out of hand.

I have HULU. Netflix, Amazon Prime and I'm now trying Youtube TV for the local and cable stuff. This is costing too damn much.

So what you want is the exact opposite of competition then? What do you think all these networks are going to do? Make less money from a unifier platform when they could just stream it themselves? Besides, signing up for these services is not nearly as hard as it is Origin or Steam. On my smart tvs, once you log into something you never have to worry about logging in again, so all the channels you want will eventually just be apps icons instead of channel icons. Streaming providers are going to be just like apps, but everyone is not going to settle for one streaming service to serve up their content if they will lose money.

Also, as I have said to others who bitch about the Uplays, Origins, and other launchers of the world... get over it. This is going to always be a constant because this is what competition looks like. Uplay, Origin, and others were trash in the beginning, but now they are legitimately better than Steam in some ways and no so much in others. Steam could stand to learn some things from the others.

Maybe so, but in the USN, this very day, every ship has it's own patch.

The missing parts in the hull are still stupid.

They violated Canon and beloved characters

They were overly politically correct by introducing a gay female captain who's also black. Jesus why didn't they stick her in a wheelchair and pull at the PC strings a little more.

And word is the Klingons were made isolationist, modeled after Trump supporters. So they made it political. (Not that I support either damn idiotic side of sheep supporters)

If Paramount and cbs think they can charge me to pay for this crap they can kiss my shiny white geek a$$.

I'm not going to watch it tonight. I guess it will be free tonight on CBS and then CBS All Access only. Bunch of nope for me. I'm not going to add CBS to Netflix and Amazon for one show. It will eventually be on DVD.

as an admitted star trek addict, I will probably watch it. but everything I've read makes me want to hate it

Oh man, I just love the hipster / old people "why in my day (x) was fucking better goddammit!" A lot of people have not even seen it yet, damn at least ride out the first season, I mean, TNG's first season wasn't too shiny either. Once they caught their groove though, that is when the magic happened. And now for those who are whining about "political" stuff and getting sand in their vaginas due to the particular circumstances of characters OF A GODDAMN FICTIONAL TV SHOW, IMO means you have some serious issues and need to put the fucking Kool-Aide down.

Just sayin'.

As a Star Trek fan, you should hate it. How far Star Trek has fallen from Next Generation, DS9 & Voyager. :(

Just because it doesn't follow TNG, DS9 and VOY, doesn't mean it won't be enjoyable. I'm a little worried about discontinuities with the universe, but it is a prequel by quite a few years, so SOME things could be different.

I - too - consider the TNG/DS9/VOY universe to be paramount, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy Enterprise. I didn't enjoy it as much, but I enjoyed it.

JJ Abrams films on the other hand, the differences in the aesthetic sensibilities were enough to really turn me off. (I know, I know, alternate universe, but still)

I'm hoping for an experience more like Enterprise and less like JJ Abrams films. Only way to find out is to watch it, and thus I'm looking forward to this.

I've set the MythTV DVR to record the first two. No way in hell I'm signing up for All Access though. I'm hoping the rest will be made available some other way.

No, it doesn't follow Star Trek. You couldn't pay me to watch this SJW / Lens Flair generation vomit. It looks downright terrible. Let us know how it goes, although I already know the outcome. :shifty:

"Watch Star Trek: Discovery". No thanks. I think I'll take one of the lead actors up on his public dare and not watch the series at all or even worry about following it.

How long before they are complaining about people pirating the show.... I give it 1 day after episode 2

It's going to be really hard to make a prequel to the original star trek given the goofy technology designs of that generation when compared to our modern technologies today that still precede what would have existed on the original show. You would have to make a show with inferior technology in EVERY ASPECT than to what was presented in the original series. No matter what you do, it is going to look more modern than the original series, and writing is going to have to take into account this technology curve. Unless we are just going to say 'forget all 3+ iterations of Star Trek ever existed' and this is a modern re imagining of a 'timeline' that existed prior to the general story line of the 1960s+ era with more realistic (future) space age technology (and textiles).

I get all that content and more via cable o_O
