Apple Special Event 9/12

Well, this even was rather bad.

Apple Watch - bad product by design since start.
Apple TV 4k - welcome to 2015, Apple.
iPhone 8 - more like iPhone 7S.
iPhone X - poor developers, now we have to account for inacessible corners and that cutout.

Also no Mac Mini update. After all, it was only over 1000 days since last Mac Mini downgrade, why would be there an update ?

I too was hoping for a mini update.

Not sure ... I guesss the apps will not be able to use it and place content beyond images. But I might be wrong, not yet tried in Xcode simulators

So they spent some years getting everyone to hand over finger prints and now they are cool with that data so ramping up to detailed facial mapping? Wowzers..

What's the difference between this and what android has been doing for years? Facial unlock was on Android phones since 2015. After Touch ID was released, pretty much every android phone that was above $50 added a finger print sensor.

Yes, but Android got there first, like practically a decade ago so again Apple is just playing catch-up to the rest of the smartphone industry.

How come after a decade Samsung can't make a display that doesn't have colors that look like a unicorn shitting a rainbow. ;)

So what did Apple bring to the table that is new? It seems they lost innovation when they lost Steve.

Take away the larger screen and what did Samsung bring? It's not a great time for innovation from any company.

Is there a better display than Samsung's OLED?

Subjectively yes. I like the contrast but hate the color accuracy. I'd rather have an iPhone 7 plus display because of that. I'm not big enough of an Apple fan boy to say that their shit doesn't stink so we'll see how well they handle oled colors and also burn in.

Well they've had all of these other features that Apple now JUST introduced into the iPhone series (wireless charging, OLED, bezeless design, facial recognition, fast charging, etc) that they brought the innovation years ago and Apple just caught up. Apple is charging $1000+ for what is essentially a Galaxy S8 that often goes for ~$600.

Considering official Apple SDK has application setting like UIStatusBarHidden, or methods like prefersStatusBarHidden, and there are tons of fullscreen apps which disable statusbar (for example games), then you will end up with apps having unreachable areas in corners and in the statusbar area. Hopefully no one put content there, but it is possible.

https://developer.apple.com/ios/human-interface-guidelines/overview/iphone-x/

When designing for iPhone X, you must ensure that layouts fill the screen and aren't obscured by the device's rounded corners, sensor housing, or the indicator for accessing the Home screen.

There we go...

The iPhone X does nothing for me. Not really happy with the idea of bringing back glass on the back of the 8s. Maybe they hope people breaking the rear glass will encourage them to upgrade quicker in the future? I'll keep my 6s and see if the next SE has feature parity with at least 6s if I need a new phone in the future. Otherwise they are going to end up pushing me out of the eco-system.

From what I've read, Apple is sourcing the iPhone X screens from Samsung.

I believe Toshiba is/was the supplier for the NAND modules in the new iPhones, hence Apple having some issues with the sale that just went through today of Toshiba's Flash memory division to Western Digital, at least a few days ago when this deal was first mentioned Apple kinda reacted to it in a negative manner. Hell they could have just snapped up the entire division basically for nothing really - again, since they've got so much in cash reserves - they could probably buy Western Digital without even blinking too.

And more than likely Samsung is the supplier for the OLED panels, yep, which I find ironic considering how often OLED and AMOLED panels from Samsung get lambasted for being so color inaccurate compared to IPS LCD technology. It's all about color profiles more than anything else and by default most manufacturers of smartphones just don't tune the displays properly upon their initial retail release. With some devices there's color controls in the ROM that allow you to adjust it to a better more accurate setting, and custom ROMs have been doing that for years now. Hell, I still have a Galaxy S (1st gen) and even that has a Super AMOLED display in it with color profiles and there's VoodooColor which was an app that allows me to adjust most everything that can be adjusted in terms of the display accuracy.

So, yeah, it's ironic to me that Samsung is the most likely supplier of the OLED panels but I haven't seen any official confirmation of that yet.

They wanted to add wireless charging. That rules out metal based materials, and leaves in 2 options - glass and plastic. Glass has premium feel over plastic in their mind, thus decision was made easily by Apple.

There is a third option that to my surprise they didn't consider which is ceramic. The essential phone went that way. By far the most expensive and difficult to use material however.

Additionally "glass" can be improved in terms of toughness. According to Apple the glass on the face is the strongest on any device (marketing claim). I suppose in theory the back could be just as strong.

Not that any of this matters anyway. There are very few users that use a phone without a case. Since after all it's a very inexpensive and reasonable insurance policy.

According to Apple the glass on the face is the strongest on any device (marketing claim).

When Zach from JerryRigEverything gets hold of the iPhone 8/8+ and X models we'll find out for sure just how "tough" the new material (according to Apple) and the overall construction actually is. My guess, and it's just a guess based on currently available information, is that the iPhone X and that huge display (I can't bring myself to call it "edge to edge" because I see bezels, relatively large ones actually) are going to result in structural integrity failure during Zach's bend test but, maybe it'll surprise me and everyone else and survive. Sure, he does tend to put devices through non-typical usage but that's the point of such testing.

And of course we'll see countless drop tests as soon as the devices get into the hands of other YouTube channel owners and that too will show just how drop-resistant that supposedly new material Apple so proudly claims is so tough truly ends up being.

As for the glass back thing and wireless charging, well, Apple could have done that with the iPhone 4 years ago which had a glass back and was more than capable of supporting a Qi charging coil inside the casing, there were several Android devices produced at roughly the same time which supported Qi wireless charging. So, again, it's a case of Apple just lagging behind other manufacturers with other devices and deciding at some point they consider to be relevant that "Ok, now we're going to support this technology which other companies have been supporting for many years now and because we're doing it that makes it relevant to everyone else..."

Tap-to-pay, wireless charging, the drop-down notification bar, even Bluetooth audio support (remember, long ago the iPhone had Bluetooth but not audio support and they actually charged customers for a firmware update to enable Bluetooth audio support) and so much more, always late to the party but Apple always gets a pass on it, something I've never been able to figure out.

Sure. We're all aware that we'll find out that information once this is in the hands of the public. This is all just speculation. But in theory the glass on the back is better than in the 4/4S.

This nonsense again. You really have a hardon for trying to cut down Apple decisions.
So here, let me put it like this: every new piece of tech doesn't immediately become necessary. Every single phone from every single manufacturer has compromises, especially to feature set. If anything the only reason why Android looks like such a pioneer is because they have half-a-dozen manufacturers all doing different things at the same time. But any given phone doesn't have everything. In fact, the phones that are generally lauded the most even on the Android side have a reduced feature set. Phones from OnePlus or even Google's own Nexus/Pixel line. Guess what: neither the Pixel or the 3t support wireless charging either. And guess what: no one on either the Apple or Google side is losing their shit over it. Show me a SINGLE manufacturer on the Android side that has had everything. I'll wait, because you won't come up with one. There will always be compromises, especially regarding feature set, something you don't seem to understand.

Apple like any other company prioritizes what they think is important. Generally speaking they have been the company that has been pushing maturity over new tech. Their interest has never been about getting an implementation in, but rather having a good implementation. If you're an "everything must be cutting edge" sort of person, then yeah, you're going to disagree with the slower to market, but better implementation mentality. It has NOTHING to do with noticing whether an Apple device has or is 'missing' a feature. It's not like we haven't noticed what's coming out as it comes out.

We get it, Apple isn't for you. Feel free to keep speaking your mind as this is an open forum. But just as an FYI, your agenda sounds like a broken record. This isn't any different than if I went into every Android thread to shit on it saying: Don't buy a Samsung! They'll only give you support on average for 1.5 years and then you're lucky if you hear from them. Or talk about how basically every phone lags over time. Or the need to uninstall tons of software as being part of the user experience. Or how reformatting your phone is apparently necessary every few months. Or how essentially the entire OS is a VM. Or generally how stability is a joke. Or that Google isn't interested in your security, but only mining data from its endusers. Or that before installing any given app, you should research it to make sure it's not just a buggy piece of crap. Or that Google has made no effort to curate the Play store so it's filled with garbage. Or that it takes 4-6 months to get a software update on a third party after Google launches it. Or that it's likely that most third party Android manufacturers will never update a current phone to accept new versions of Android forcing end users to have to buy a new phone if they want to have new software features.

Guess what: just like Android users (apparently) don't care about any of that stuff, no Apple user is concerned that it took 2 extra years for 'features' that even after implementation still aren't really going to change the user experience in any real way. If anything, I don't get how Android users give a pass to all that nonsense. And Android manufacturers have a history and a legacy of doing all of those things continually for years. The last time I could find that Apple charged for a firmware update was in 2010. And even that was for a relatively short period of time before they dropped it.

I don't know how you give a pass to all the nonsense that Android manufacturers pull. Phones explode, you still buy their products. Phones infinite boot loop, you still buy their products. Phones receive support for only 1-2 years, you still buy their products (I love it when people try to argue Apple has planned obsolescense by the way, compared to what Android manufacturers do, it's not even close). The OS may or may not work out of the box, you still buy their products (as in, tons of users even here in the Hardforums have had long discussion about how modifying the bootloaders to install custom ROMs were necessary for certain phones). Installing new firmware might brick your phone and they won't support you if it happens, you still buy their products. Phones have bloatware you can't remove, you still buy their products. Yet Apple is the one getting a pass? I seriously don't understand how you overlook all this and not see how your own shit doesn't stink.

I would gladly wait ANOTHER 6 years for wireless charging to NOT be implemented rather than having to deal with any of that garbage that has plagued Android. But hey, I guess having a phone that I don't have to spend hours manipulating every few months just to get it to work properly like it should out of the box is just my priority. If that is giving Apple a pass, then they can have all the passes they want.

Honestly there is too much bias in this forum against apple and its sucks but I accept it. But this is what people who hate Apple really dont understand. Apple doesnt always get things right but often they get things good enough. Google, and Android OEMs dont seem to get that, they release things left and right without QC, or any effort or thought and support. I got tired of buying things like Google TV, Nexus Q, android wear etc. that promise support but never get it. Its ridiculous people are ok with the way Google supports things and does QC and all the OEMs. Sometimes people just want to buy things that work decently enough, work together in a decent ecosystem, and has great support.

There are pros and cons to iOS and Android you pick the one best for you, but too often people really try to push their preferred platform on to someone else.

Is giving away phones for free to family members considered "pushing their preferred platform" ? On other side, i gave my mom the spare Lumia 640, which has Windows 10 Mobile - so i guess not :D.

pretty much this, ive tried 3-4 android phones in the last two years since i support them at work and every time i regret it, i always go back to iOS

the android hardware is pretty nice now, the s7, s8, pixel i had no complaints with hardware, however the android apps are hit or miss, then there is always the odd one that either has spyware and bloatware in it, or hangs in the background and your battery takes a dump 2 hours into the work day

i hate apple as a company, i hate how they do business, i have 0 use for mac computers, and i am certainly not a pro apple or anti apple type, but the iphone/ipad is just a vastly superior experience, the hardware these days is all quote good and is moot, if anything apple is behind in terms of hardware but the ios is so good you dont notice or care. also suggest ios to friends/family not because its "better" but they cant screw them up, they are similar across all devices and they just work, no extra support required from me. trying to explain to 80 android users at work where a setting is or how to change something is always cumbersome and never exactly the same on varying models/makers.

And this is why people hate Apple fanboyism, this is how Apple Apologist posts look like.

That 'garbage from Android' as you say has been working on millions/billions of phones for years. If you want to wait 6 years for commodity tech to be introduced by holy Apple before you declare it 'usable', go ahead but don't pretend it was broken before. Fingerprint readers, wireless charging, BT, copy paste. notifications, control center, and hundreds of other features worked flawlessly before they came to iOS, we're not talking about actual technical advance like using the Kinect sensor array for FaceID, which are few and far between.

As expected, everything that Apple claims is a flaw in other OS's, and their fans concur, becomes a wonderful feature when it comes to Apple, with no changes in look/feel except being worse in many cases (like notifications).

There are plenty of things to admire about Apple, your post just reeks of the typical RDF infected blind loyalty.

You responded to directly to zero of my comments. If you'd like to have a discussion point by point, feel free.
I said precisely zero about any of the topics you mentioned in your post. I have no interest in discussing a straw man argument, that is to say, discussing things or arguing things with you that I didn't even talk about in the first place.
But it seems like the entire point of my post went over your head. Either that or your ability to either understand or respond to hyperbole or irony is nil.

I'd also be careful as to not throw stones while in glass houses. You do plenty of your own apologetics. Your response is in service of that, by casting a wide blanket over an entire group of people and then making the statement that: "you're all this way" (especially considering, once again I didn't talk about a single thing in your response).
So good job. You get to feel smug and superior about your brand and its choices. While diminishing others and theirs.

Uhh..Fingerprints readers were complete and utter shit in phones until recently. Early wireless charging was more of a useless gimmick than anything due to how slow it was, something that really has only improved within the last 18-24 months as mass adoption has happened and everyone has been rushing to improve things.

Android has several flaws. This is simply a fact. Some flaws are in the OS itself, but most are caused by manufacturers. He is not wrong about any of his claims about the issues on the Android side of things. It is, and has always been, a mess. Android is a great power user OS, but it is also incredibly bloated and manufacturers make it much worse due to all the crap they pull. Aside from a brief stint with WinPho and a couple Apple devices (5 and my current 7+) I've been using Android devices since the original Droid. Can't say I've ever been overly fond of the OS and how it "feels" to use. When I had the time and interest in messing around with the customization ability of the phone it was fun to tweak things, install CFW, and so on to make it run super smooth. However, the out of the box experience never once impressed me no matter which phone I had. The S6 and Note 4 came the closest to hitting that mark, but they both still had their annoying issues especially with slow-ass updates. For some people, Android devices are great and the right choice, but let's not pretend that there aren't plenty of people out there apologizing for it's faults and acting like fanboys. Souljer's post was snarky, but accurate. People give Android a pass with its issues just as much as Apple, and more so sometimes.

Both phones have their ups and downs. Different people use them for different reasons, that doesn't make anyone wrong for their choice. What I can't stand is when people go into Apple or Android threads with nothing to contribute but "Apple or Android sucks. Here is why Apple or Android sucks". If someone cares enough to make a thread about a topic, do you really think they give a shit if you don't like the topic? This thread was supposed to be a discussion about the Apple event and the iphone announcements. Instead it gets derailed into an argument about Apple vs Android. Nobody here is going to convince the other side that their choice of phone is wrong, so why bother? Go make another thread outside of the APPLE FUCKING SUBFORUM about why you think Android is better.

Just lock this shit.
