Apple's New Facial Recognition iPhone Unlocking Tool Failed in Its First Public Demo

Face ID revolutionizes authentication on iPhone X using a state-of-the-art TrueDepth camera system made up of a dot projector, infrared camera, and flood illuminator. Unfortunately, it may not actually work (as well as it should, anyway). CNBC has a video of the mishap if you want to see it (or re-live it).

Face ID projects more than 30,000 invisible IR dots. The IR image and dot pattern are pushed through neural networks to create a mathematical model of your face and send the data to the secure enclave to confirm a match, while adapting to physical changes in appearance over time. All saved facial information is protected by the secure enclave to keep data extremely secure, while all of the processing is done on-device and not in the cloud to protect user privacy.
 
well, at least they said you can't fool it with a photograph or holding it up to another hirez phone.

All this advanced technology to get a phone unlocked. No offense, but a finger tapping out a PIN or swiping a pattern lock to unlock a device = still the most secure method overall of keeping your data safe on a locked phone. You're the one that knows the PIN or the swipe, nobody else does unless you tell them.

Face unlock? Someone clocks you across the back of the head with a hard object, you're unconscious, they take your phone and hold it up to your face, voila, unlocked.

Fingerprint unlock? Same situation, just now using your fingertip(s) as required.

PIN? If you're unconscious they can't really get it from you.

Swipe? Same thing.

Sure they could torture you for the information but overall the PIN or swipe are still more secure than the other methods. The whole idea of biometrics with smartphones is a complete waste of time and effort and the technology IMO.

Just like Apple to take something stupid simple - slide to unlock - and make it so fucking overly complicated they can now call "Face ID" a marketing gimmick more than anything else. As for the photograph thing and it working on this new iPhone X, we don't know that for sure yet and you can be damned certain there are people already at work on a way to get around it even now mere minutes after the demo and I would suspect that within a short period of time after the phone is available in stores someone will find a way.

Oh, and they added the name "Super" to "Retina Display," can't forget about that, that really made the entire commercial aka "special event" worth watching I suppose. :D
 
Amazing how dumb we as a society have become. Cool! The phone can map my face for better snap chat masks! Or brand new emoji's to express how I feel... in a text message...

Instead of focusing on new crap like this, how about improving on gorilla glass so that it's even MORE resistant to breaking. Or how about a battery that lasts longer than a day of normal usage? Basic shit like this is what they're ignoring, but instead, just pretty it up and put a "premium" price tag on it.
 
I will always use a numeric password to unlock my phone. Bio-metrics in theory sound cool and futuristic, but they can and will get abused.

less broken phones and better battery's means less phones sold in the future because they last too long.
 
It seems it didn't fail, but that it requires a passcode after restart or longer sleep time. Another click bait false news?

I never understood needing a battery that lasts more than a day. Do you not sleep at some point in the day? Plug the fucking thing in. With fast charging it takes like an hour. What a useless thing to moan about.

Samsung tried to give us more battery and lol @ that fiasco.

While rare, there are still instances where this can become an issue. Recently I had to pull an impromptu all nighter at work which meant i didn't have a charger. Even with putting the display down to low it died after around 20 hours which was still before i got home.

I think a phone that's not being used except to occasionally check the time should be able to last 24 hours.

Ding ding ding! Phones from 2-3 years ago are still just as relevant today as they were back then. It's not hardware or power that's an issue, it's that people just can't seem to hold on to the darn things or keep them powered up for more than 8 hours. Both of which can be attributed to phones continuously getting thinner (because, y'know, thin is sexy! ...unless you're a woman... then thin is sexist). For those who take care of their phones however, and don't mind that their battery life has turned to mush after the first year, there hasn't been a good reason to upgrade since 2014. And that can be said for both iPhone and Android.

You've never been in situations where you didn't have an outlet readily available? Ever gone camping and forgot to bring a portable battery? Ever been in area's where the reception is non-existant and your phone is actively trying to search for a signal and it drains your battery? How about flying half way around the world while watching a show on your phone? Had some spare time so you played a game on the phone and an emergency came up and you had to go, but your battery is already low? Of course that's never happened to you, because that's never happened to any of us. I wouldn't call it useless moaning, more like, you're not thinking ahead.

I looked at the iPhone X, and I have some concerns about the mschine learning data thar this facial recognition method rely on, since some amount of cloud based processing will be used and we have no idea if my biometrics are sent to Cupertino even if Apple claims otherwise. I think many of us are skeptical if not wary about this.

The other thing is that the phone continues the idea of no button and no jack, and you cannot replace or add anything. The only relieves are that the phone finally supports quick charging and that the phone has finally caught up to flagship android in display density. I dont deny that it looks the part of a slick phone at that.

It would help productivity at a lot of jobs to have a smaller battery but then again they can just plug in and keep going. So many people at my job are constantly on their phone. I honestly dont get how they have so much to talk about that they never put down their phone. If they not talking they on the internet.

My life isn't tied to an electronic device. I was recently camping and my phone DID die.. GASP.. and you know what I did? Nothing. I put it away and waiting for the next day. During a flight I would consider the battery life and read a book or take a nap.

All of your scenarios wouldn't affect me, so I won't make situations for them all. When my phone dies I place it to the side and do something else. There is a good chance that if I was using it so much that it has died within a day, I probably should have been doing something more productive.

That is only because your life doesnt feature scenarios where you need more then 6hr of screen on time without a pause. Anyone who has extended productivity need on the go would, which obviously isnt you. Nor are you someone who intends to go 3000 charging cycles or more on one device.

Clearly you have an assumption and are projecting, are you not? Anyone who is in IT (common on this [H] board) uses that display and keyboard for that long easily.

Sure, productive purpose is a want and not some human hygienic need (or physiological need according to Maslow), but it is not as if you care since the wants and needs of others clearly have no bearing on you.

edit: Maybe you aren't as forcibly reminded of the hierarchy of needs as most here would have, but I digress.

Or the Note Edge, a derivative of the awesome Note 4 of 2014. We can't deny that this phone is edge to edge from top to bottom though.
At least Apple finally is at parity with other flagship phones in this regard.

I know that feel. I had a Note 4 for a good while, and I only moved up to LG's V20 a week ago. There simply aren't many choices available for those of us who love IR blaster and removable battery anymore.

Using a COMPUTER for six hours at a time, sure. Using a phone for the same period and bring PRODUCTIVE? Good luck.
