So yah think for my birthday present...I'm rebuilding my system. I know the i5-3570k would still last me a good bit...I still feel the need for an upgrade

With that in mind...I'm going to get:
Ryzen 1700 or 1700X (depending on what's on sale)
G.Skill TridentZ RGB 16GB DDR4 2400

Annd here comes my problem: I've narrowed it down to 2 boards:
MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon
Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K5

Don't know which one I want...also hoping my Corsair H50 will keep the Ryzen cool. But yah...any suggestions? And no I'm not going any higher than $160 on a board.

I don't think that the H50 will work very well for that processor.

MSI is generally higher quality overall than Gigabyte.

ive never had a problem with either company but i do prefer GB. and kwaz is right, you'll want better cooling than that.

I have a Gigabyte K7. It's great. You can't go wrong with either really. K5 or MSI.

Sounds like the H50 needs to be retired....well it won't be retired as I'll transfer the i5 to the den pc. I'll grab a beefier one (NZXT or Corsair or.....)

If you want LLC or absolute voltage control don't get the gaming k5, it has neither. If you still want gigabyte, get the gaming 5 (lacks bclk adjustment, but has better vrm, llc, and absolute + dynamic voltage control) or k7 (has all the above) instead.

Don't know how the msi board compares.

Generally, I think MSI has slightly better build quality, but GIGABYTE seems to have it's shit together better than anyone else where socket AM4 is concerned. The AX370 Gaming K7 is easily the best AM4 motherboard I've worked with so far.

Better QC for their bios wouldn't hurt, though. 1.55-1.7 vcore is a bit ridiculous to miss, even if it only happens when set to normal/offset. Thankfully they've released a new bios that's fixed it now.

Ive had 1 msi that actually caught on fire due to the sata port ive used Gigabyte boards with never an issue ever .......MSi poor low grade under quality and lots of bios updates for there stability issues among other things ive seen over and over and over and over............

UEFI BIOS and AGESA code issues are rampant with all of Ryzen motherboards. Getting that shit under control is a fairly recent development.

I understand, it's just a bit disappointing...

I think I will stick with the K5 (K7 a little too much honestly). I will also drop the RGB ram and just go with the Flare X. Then again...K7 is tempting...

Hi
it's stable now? Am heading in same direction asTurbo Mach Thanks

I pulled the trigger:

AMD Ryzen 7 1700X (happened to be the same price as the 1700 so why not)
Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K7
16GB G.Skill Flare X DDR4-2400 (for now)
Corsair Hydro H110i Extreme

I checked. All compatible so I should be good to go. The Intel build will just be moved to the den pc and THAT pc (which was a Core i3-4000 series...I'll have to check which i3 exactly) I will probably give to my bro.

Just remember the speed of the RAM is the speed of the Infinity fabric channel(1/2). Faster performance at higher base clock of IF.

Why would you get 2400? I guess it might go faster with relaxed timings but Ryzen really shines with faster ram so 3200 makes more sense.

Agreed, though the last AGESA code version I looked at the technical details on showed 2400 was all that was supported in a 4x DIMM configuration. However, I don't know if that's changed since then or not.

Yep, found that out about the BCLOCK, some how I missed that when I purchased the gaming 5... But Like everyone says, both are great boards..

The problems with AM4 motherboards are dying down somewhat, but don't kid yourself you are going to be in for a fight if you get any RAM that's not on the QVL for that particular board. You may very well have to dial that in with a specific UEFI that's got the AGESA code version required to make that RAM work. With Ryzen and AM4, newer is sadly not always better when it comes to UEFI BIOS updates.

The whole thing is a pain in the ass. TR4 is better, but I still have to fight with those too.

But where lies the problem the memory controller on the cpu or the bios ? If it is just the bios it is a matter of time ...
