Reddit officially launched its own video hosting. Starting way back in June certain communities were able to upload videos to its page. The platform is expanding for a majority of the communities with moderators given the ability to opt-out. The company's intentions are to provide a more seamless experience for its users. Off the heels of launching its own image hosting, uploads are limited to 1 GB and videos of 15 minutes supporting multiple formats.

During its beta, Reddit says that the most engaging videos weren't coming from the most popular users - as you'd see on YouTube, for example - but were being leveraged by regular community members as an extension of the conversations they were already having there.

Heh until this hits their nudes section... ;)

Yes I know its "safe for work" only for now...I give it a month before its the entire site lol.

I still don't understand how reddit makes money thus supporting this service. Then again I don't really use reddit other then to show my kids that Cats are assholes.

Similar to twitter, entertainment + political groups paying for their opinion to be plastered into people's minds.

ads. With this new video platform they are hoping people will use it so they can serve you ads as opposed to linking a youtube video and letting the channel get the ad revenue. There are already people re-uploading youtube videos to the reddit video player. They are trying to funnel in all the ad revenue into themselves. Also people pay for reddit gold even though thats not a huge money maker.

Ironically
r/videos posted a sticky today ..
Due to a large number of problems with the beta, we are opting out of the Video Beta program. (self.videos)
"
In our initial announcement opting into the program we said if things were not working out, we would discontinue our participation from the beta. after giving a suitable amount of time with the program, we decided this new beta is still not ready to work within /r/videos for the following reasons.

  • The large number of stolen videos

  • Poor incorporation into mobile apps

  • Difficult for us to verify spam or licencing issues

  • Inability to disable autoplay
Please provide all feedback to /r/beta for any other issues you have noticed in this short time we've participated. While we were happy to provide testing for the beta, we feel this field test has provided sufficient data necessary to show what needs adjustment. We wish to politely discontinue until these issues are resolved.

If you have any questions, feel free to modmail or contact us on Discord

Thanks for reading, and have a lovely day."
