AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 Video Card Review @ [H]

Looks Like I'll be keeping my 1070. To say that this was a let down is an understatement. I really wanted to give Intel an Nvidia the boot. But for now only Intel gets the boot.

At least Threadripped looked fairly decent for the price, evenly trading blows with Intel at the same range. Depending on which applications you use AMD might be the superior choice there.

Odd how a few years back the video cards from AMD were great but the CPUs were sub par. Now that has flipped. AMD needs to get both right next time.

I am looking forward to mobile Ryzen based CPUs.

Why no 4k testing? We're testing GPU's not CPU's
Already answered, but will put it here again for ease of access. The RX Vega 64 is NOT a true 4K gaming card in our opinions. Much like exactly what we said about the GTX 1080. The GTX 1080 Ti is the first "real" 4K card. Sure you can take the V64 and 1080 and play at 4K, but turning down the IQ is not what 4K is about. Your thoughts may differ.

Kyle and Brent, you are missing one very important point about these GPU's and that is these cards are a Godsend for those of us that own a Freesync monitor.

LOL...a "godsend"

How about "these cards will be a decent option for those of us that own a freesync monitor."

"A godsend" would be taking back any sort of price/performance crown, which this clearly didn't do.

This is a passable release at best. The only reason I am considering is because I own a 1440p freesync monitor. If nvidia released freesync compatible drivers I certainly would go there after this release.

Your fanboy is showing a bit too hard on this one.

If you want 4k gaming there is no way to get there without at least $1,200 spent on one or more GPU's.

Vega is so far off the mark when it comes to 4k, that it isn't even worth wasting the time it would take to test it.

Disappointed. I guess it doesn't matter right now with the loud cooling solution, but do these cards have coil whine or capacitor squeal?

I agree. Sorry if my post suggested it is better than a 1080. My point is solely directed at us Freesync owners. This review seems spot on in every way, I'm just happy to finally have almost 1080 performance to finally unleash some Freesync goodness. :)

He'd better pull something out of his hat or the only thing he'll be drawing is unemployment.

When AMD's whole push leading up to the launch was to tout Freesync, you had to know something was up.

#waitfornavi

Yeah, when your new flagship can't keep up with the competitions model that has been on the market for more than a year, you have a problem. Especially when that competitor has also launched three models (Pascal Titan X, 1080Ti and Titan Xp) that perform even better.

It's one thing to compete on price, but, by pricing these at approximately the same price as a 1080, and then performing worse, they aren't even doing that.

I think you'd have to be a real fanboy to buy one of these...

...either that or be pseudo-locked into the AMD ecosystem by owning a Freesync screen.

Well, shit...
Anyone want to garner some guesses when the first significant price drops will occur? I'm thinking we'll see some good sales this November for BF.
Was hoping to see the O2 cooled V64 come in closer to 1080Ti performance. That power draw...sick burn, AMD!

Thanks for the effort and time put in for another great review, [H]!

If you came to that conclusion based on this review and the previous FSvsGS video, then why are you hellbent on getting Kyle/Brent to mention Freesync in this review? I'm going to go out on a limb and state that most PC gamers that regularly target the $500+ GPU price realm already know about Freesync and GSync and how one/other applies to their individual situations.

Kyle: Remember the industry insider editorial you did on 5/27/16 about Raja maybe wanting to spin the GPU side away from AMD and go indy again? So how many sub-par / failure GPUs has Raja helmed now? Is this just trying to make the GPU cheaper to spin off or just being collectively terrible at their jobs?

Considering the out of stock situation I see popping up in multiple threads plus the FreeSync monitor owners out there, I don't foresee AMD/RTG dropping prices much at all. There's demand out there for these cards regardless of the fact that this is not a halo card like the 1080 Ti and the Titan X/Xp editions.

Then again, I'm not an oracle. ;)

This GPU has probably been in the pipeline for 3 or 4 years now, only so much he can do since he took over. I think Navi will be the first "full Raja" GPU? Not sure.

Is it really a strong demand or incredibly constrained supply's?

1080Ti is not a Halo Product like the Titan.

The same supply/stock issues were also present when Fury launched, before their massive price drops...remember?

You replied, three times........Overall, nice review though. :)

Oooh I'm so important because you replied to me, I must have really gotten to you condescendingsmileyface!!

Happy fifth birthday.

Anyway where are all the people explaining how Vega is still awesome and a better choice? There were so many.

I've updated my "wait for Vega" to a "wait for Navi", with an added caveat to "wait for a crash in the cryptocurrency market".

Honestly, disappointing showing by AMD. I have seen Vega56 reviews that are showing compelling value against a GTX1070, but seriously, the power requirements for it are bananas. I normally don't focus a whole lot on that since I'm not running these things 24/7, but holy smokes AMD, get it together on the efficiency end! I know I live in Canada, but I don't need a space heater in my office.

First time in over 12 years I bought a Nvidia card when they had the 1080 for $399 on Amazon. Looks like I will be waiting on a refresh before I go back to AMD.

Wait, what does a Youtube video have to do with this review and the failure to mention how important these GPU's are/will be to Freesync owners? Please don't get defensive, I'm just pointing out this is a HUGE deal for a great many of us.

Doesn't it kind of go without saying that a higher end offer with a proprietary solution would be a benefit to users of that solution?

1080Ti is not a Halo Product like the Titan.

Considering that the 1080 Ti trades blows with the original Titan X (Pascal) I'd beg to differ. It may not have the halo price but it has the halo performance.

I do, but when the Fury X landed, it and the 980 Ti were trading blows (only a well-overclocked Maxwell Titan exceeded both). There are three cards ahead of Vega 64 and they're all by nVidia, making it a mid-range/low-high performance card at best. People who have not already bought a 1070/1080 now have a card to go with their FreeSync monitors.

I want to see the Vega Frontier Edition tested with the new 17.8.1 driver to see how it performs. Anyone seen a watercooled Vega edition review?

Is it really a strong demand or incredibly constrained supply's?

I would argue that little bit of both although mostly constrained Supply.

If I had to Hazard a guess, AMD just wants to sell enough to break even with Polaris and Vega. These are remnants of the Arctic Islands architecture that are horrible in terms of efficiency and very limited.

they will start next month telling everyone how the NEW card will be released shorty that will beat the ti and titan card....expect it to be released before Chirstmas....
2020

I see how this goes. Buy the first Titan of the generation and enjoy.
If you bought the first Titan X Pascal, you leap frogged over all of this GPU nonsense.

Yeah, I have done this a couple of times now.

I bought the first Kepler Titan back in 2013 (because I was trying to get enough framerate on the then difficult to drive 2560x1600 resolution) and it lasted me 2+ years. Never before did a video card last me that long.

Then when I went 4k, I replaced the Kepler Titan for a couple of 980ti's, but hated the SLI experience, so when Pascal Titan hit, I jumped on it, and it has done well.

Both times I felt immediate buyers remorse for spending as much as I did on a GPU, but that has subsided over time. The $1,000 Kepler Titan was an absolute steal considering how long it was relevant. (My stepson still uses it in his 1080p system). My current Pascal Titan is doing a good job. I wish it had some more performance for my 4k needs, but it is so much better than two 980ti's in SLI, that I can't help but be happy in comparison.

I'm looking forward to the first Volta Titan to see if it can bring me some more comfortable frame-rates to run everything at 60+fps at 4k.

All that being said, I need to stop making the mistake of being an early high resolution adopter and the struggling to drive the new resolution for a couple of years until faster GPU's come out. I did this with 1920x1200 when it first came out, with 2560x1600 when it first came out, and now with 4k...

Volta Titan is definitely going into my rig. Day one purchase for maximum value.

Yep.

Don't get me wrong. It's a lot of money for a GPU any way you look at it, but if you jump in on day one, you get to use it longer for the same price, so its a better deal, and it winds up being better than trying to jump from GPU to GPU every 6 months to a year. Just buy once, and keep it 2+ years, and don't worry about the bullshit.

You know what the most frustrating part of this whole deal is...I want to grab a Vega 56 as it looks like it is going to be "OK enough" to upgrade my R390 to and push my 1440p Freesync monitor at max res w/ eye candy...BUT I CAN'T BUY THE THING!

I never pre-order, but damnit I should have pre-ordered.

I just want someone to take my money at MSRP and be done following video cards for a year.

I had to go 4K because of the productivity benefits. But I would really like to have a 40" 4K 120Hz gaming monitor. I wouldn't need to upgrade for many years.
