I want 2x 16x slots

for a Kaby Lake processor.

I have yet to decide on proc or MoBo. I tend to build my systems around the MoBo.

What chipset will allow me to run two Video Cards @ 16x? is it still the x99 chipset?
 
This PCI lanes crap takes me back to the days of having limited IRQs and trying to make sure the USB/Sound card and GPU didn't share the same one.

We haven't really come as far as we think really.

Crappy times.
 
X99 with an I7 6850k will get you true 40x lanes and 16 x3.0 support.

I think that's the cheapest true entry point for stuff you can still buy new.

It's the route I took in the last month.

Z270's method isn't the same. Those CPUs only support 20 lanes and coffee lake isn't coming out on 1151.

Coffee Lake is 1151, there is no word on its lane count as of yet but likely same as kaby/sky.

regardless of all this talk, Multi GPU is dying and still isn't usually limited by 2x 8x PCI-E 3.0 in the majority of metrics.

PLX chip fix to expand lanes isn't really expanding them its just sharing lanes but hey if you feel like seeing x16 on both GPUs for the sake of it sure buy the WS board with a PLX, an Asus Maximus IX Apex board for 100 less with better DDR4 capability will kick it around like its nothing in benchmarks and top scores any day of the week because CPU and its Ram are the bottlneck at the top end of performance not gpus and PCI-E lanes.

Shows 16 lanes on the cpu and 24 lanes from the chipset for m.2, x4, x1, etc. on the block diagram. DDR4 2666 standard.

Intel can be 3 slot x16, x0, x0 or x8, x8, x0 or x8, x4, x4. Most makers will only use two slots from the cpu lanes for x16, x0 or x8,x8 and pull the 3rd slot x4 from the platform controller. Need SLI certification for dual cards and dual x8 lanes minimum required by nVidia, AMD could work 3 way crossfire with x8, x4, x4, or dual crossfire and a nvme drive like the intel 750.

Ryzen with X370 is single x16 or dual x8.

To get dual x16 it is either Intel HEDT platform with a high cost 40+ lane cpu. The cheaper 28 lane or 16 lane cpus will not do dual x16. Or AMD Threadripper, neither will be mainstream price

My understanding is coffee lake won't work with existing z170 and z270 boards.
