Must-Have Applications & Games for VR

GORN is fucking awesome. Full stop. Everything about it just works so well and the attention to detail, despite it's cartoonish nature, is bar none the best out there for a VR first person fighter.

Whether you're slicing off faces like a fish filet with the sword, shooting guys in the head with arrows, smashing armor with a hammer, or ripping their arms off then beating them to death with them...it's all possible!

Dirt Rally also works extremely well and VR is integrated nicely. Full controls and options in the game.

Ultrawings is pretty amazing too! Great flying game with an all virtual cockpit and controls.

Rez Infinite was a PS4 / PSVR exclusive until very recently, its now out on PC.
It has very high reviews for the PS4 so I bought it on PC.
Its pretty good fun if a bit simplistic, only played it once so far to level 3, need to allocate some time to game a bit more.
It can use touch (only one hand needed), joypad or the little thumb pad.

There's some seriously glaring omissions on the cockpit sim side of things in that list:

I was about to add Elite: Dangerous in there as well 'til I saw that you had it under "Adventure & Exploration" instead of "Planes" like EVE: Valkyrie and House of the Dying Sun were. Bit confusing because of that, I admit.

For the non-native list, I was surprised to see that X-Plane 11 was in there by way of FlyInside, but Flight Simulator X wasn't, which uses the same utility. With that in mind, I might pick up XP11 later, though I'm far more interested in the sort of flight sims where I get to blow stuff up, I admit.

There's another game that I haven't had the chance to try out, and as such I didn't include it right away in the above list, but it hit Steam Early Access recently and is getting a lot of positive feedback. It's sort of a sim-lite, nowhere near as hardcore as the above two, more in line with, say, EF2000 or Joint Strike Fighter in terms of that mid-'90s level of sim complexity.

As a bonus, those of you who didn't do what I did and spent a whole lot of money on an enthusiast-grade HOTAS or rudder pedals won't be at a disadvantage, because it works entirely through motion controls! Reach out and touch that cockpit!

Finally, one more thing that isn't a cockpit sim at all, but one that I spend a lot of hours in because the melee combat still hasn't been done better in anything else I've played. Physics-based combat and LUDICROUS GIBS! go a long way.

Just make sure you've got a clear room there, because the trailer Devolver Digital made to promote GORN is not as much of a joke as you'd think. I've seen YouTubers break ceiling lights and other things playing the alpha builds; watch those Guardian/Chaperone boundaries!

I have not played my Rift in almost a month.
I just got GORN today and it is awesome. I will add it to my home workout routine.

The early/free version of Gorn is here: https://raithza.itch.io/gorn

It's worth the $20 on Steam.
Yeah, I played that the very moment I got my Touch controllers - and scuffed one of 'em that same day. The lack of any sort of locomotion makes things tough with limited room space!

On the other hand, I miss tearing physics a new one by stretching enemy bodies in the current EA build - not that I blame the developer, given how blatantly OP it was in said alpha build.

The reason GORN works so well to me is largely because the melee combat is physics-based, rather than seeing enemies have generic flinch animations.

It's the closest thing we'll get to Die By The Sword in VR for the time being - complete with severing an enemy's arm and beating him to death with it!

Rez Infinite on Steam took me by complete surprise, but yeah, I impulse-bought it to show my support. Thankfully, it's a competent port. Runs very well, and VR mode controls great once you set the aiming to type 2 (motion controller-based instead of gaze-based). It's arguably much easier than the original console versions just for that alone, since you can slew your lock-on cursor far more quickly than the analog stick input would've allowed.

It is rather short and simplistic, but think of it as more of an arcade-style game with really trippy cyberspace visuals. Those are the sort of games Sega historically excels at, and Rez is no exception.

The one other gripe I have with it in VR is that there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of stereoscopic depth to it, so it's much more difficult to gauge the proximity of certain enemies/projectiles to your character, much less the advancing walls of a certain boss. I'm not the only one to notice this, going by the Steam discussion forums.

Wait a minute. How did this not make the FPS list yet?

The Wolfenstein 3D/Blake Stone retro aesthetic took me in at first, but it's actually brilliantly tense because of all the projectiles you can dodge and weave through. Imagine if Police 911 (Police 24/7 on PS2) let you free-roam, and that's the kind of ducking and weaving I'm talking about - all while you're on the move, shooting your way through hordes of guards and robots. It's quite a tense workout, but it makes you feel like a real badass once you start popping off all those headshots under a hail of fire.

Note that the Steam page has a demo link; use that to get the current builds of the game. The final product may not be free, but hey, GORN's alpha builds were (and still are) free, too.

I am sure some people use the pedal/steering wheel combo. Any ones they have stuck with since it worked out so well?
I use the MS joypad, its very good with PC2. Its shows how bad they goofed it in PC1.
I'll get a wheel in maybe a year, saving for other things first.

I have a ~10 year old logitech G25 and it works great. No plans to upgrade unless it breaks. I built a simple cockpit out of 2x4's so I could permanently mount it and just slide it into a corner of the room when I'm not using it. It's a lot more sturdy than mounting to a table and setup is a matter of sliding it out of the corner and plugging it in. There are tons of pc wheels on CL, even a basic cheapo one is 10x better than a gamepad. The higher end logitechs are nice and thrustmaster stuff is nice. Higher end than that isn't really necessary imo. You can spend a ton of money for load cell based brake pedals, belt driven force feedback, high end shifter etc. but a decent logitech gets you 99% of the experience at 1/5 (or less) of the cost. You can mix and match a lot of the stuff as well, so if you get a wheel and like it but don't like the pedals or shifter or whatever, you can grab standalone units instead of having to buy a whole new setup.

Subnautica has started working really well in VR. They've fixed a bunch of the VR issues in the current experimental build thats currently out. Not roomscale, but it has one of the more immersive environments outside of Lone Echo.

Have they done anything about the apparent motion sickness caused? It's one of like two games that makes me sick to my stomach after playing them for ~15 minutes or so. Might be a frame rate thing though...

ZomDay for $10 is a steal:

Loving it so far...like three hours last night only.

They've boosted the framerate and fixed some of the FoV issues they were having. I can run it at max settings in VR now. Its beautiful. I'd give it a shot. If it was a framerate thing getting you, that might be resolved. I've never personally felt motion sick in that game though.

I have had 0 motion sickness, but had a problem with Windlands for about a month or so from the heights. Now I have no problem with it or doing the roller coasters.

The ZomDay game is pretty fun! Just bought it.

I just downloaded this yesterday after seeing it on reddit! I cant wait to try it. Looks fantastic.

Also for the list, how is this not on it? Duck Season is epic!

Really loving it so far. Lots of ending and creepy easter eggs.

Just to add to the list, you can play BAM's (Bullets And More) demo right now for free as a nice cheap way to try out FPS with different locomotion options.

What's the state of the current state of this game? headset with kb/m or headset with gamepad?

I play headset W gamepad. Some people say the HUD is a little close but it doesn't bother me. Runs really well on my 1080.

I played using a controller and I found the hud a little close and it took a while to adjust to it, but I still do not like it.

Hakaba you on a Rift or a Vive? I hear people complaining about the HUD but I just don't have issues with it. Wonder if its worse on one or the other?

Vive, things may have changed though since I played both pre/post release.

Thought so I'm on a Rift. Wonder if this is a little difference thats just more tolerable because is a little sharper on the rift or if theres a slight FoV difference between the 2 headsets or something.

From what I have seen the Rift does look sharper, not sure on the FOV. I love the Rifts controllers, they just conform to your hand.

Thx for the updates.
Having a decent time with 'Wizards' scored on sale at 8 bucks.

My top 3, using a Rift:

  1. A Mage's Tale - Hands down my favorite experience, and the game that keeps me going back for more despite the eye strain. XD
  2. Superhot VR
  3. Robo Recall
Honorable mentions to Rez Infinite and Bending the Light.

Still want to try:
  1. Lone Echo
  2. Skyrim VR
  3. Beat Saber
  4. Moss
  5. Wizards
  6. Arizona Sunshine
