Volta Rumor Thread - Volta spotted in the Wild

Some of us have been predicting a summer/fall '17 release (check my post history).

Could go either way. They did the Crippled/Full titan with Kepler and Pascal, but went straight to full Titan X with Maxwell, and Maxwell and Volta don't have node change.

Do you have a recent confirmation of the node not changing? I've seen a couple of sources say we might see a small shrink.

Foot in mouth... Volta is on 12nm, Pascal is on a mix of 14/16nm...

In the light of that, I'd go with Crippled/Full titan again due to uncertain yields, Maxwell was on a more mature node so the yield were high enough to not require the cripple/full.

Here's hoping the TITAN tops out at $1200 and not $1400 or $1500. NVIDIA likes the push the envelope and it has been working well for them due to suckers like me. :)

I'd love to see how well this performs on GPU rendering, particularly with Octane and VRay. The important factor is the CUDA cores.

If they bump up Titan's price again I'm probably done with Titans after Volta. I don't think they will though.

Agreed. $1200 USD is my limit. I'll just start waiting for the Ti if the price gets bumped any further.
$1200 is way too much for a GPU. I think $1000 for a Titan was fair. I'm just going to wait for the Ti being released for $500 less and 90% of the performance. More power to the people who willing to spend $1200 tho. Not going to hate.

Yea I thought $1000 was a good price. But I don't see it going back down to $1000 after them bumping the price up on the medium sized chip last year.

The better question is: Will Nvidia release a full fledged Titan with all the cores intact like the Titan Xp vs crippled Titan X.

Well considering they launched the 1st Pascal Titan early in the cycle I would say owners are happier to be able to buy one pretty quickly rather than wait a long time for it to release with 300ish more cores.
The Maxwell Titan only had 2.5 months lead over the 980ti.
With Pascal the Titan had 7 months over the 1080ti.

8 months is a long time to wait (he full Titan Xp launched 1 month after 1080ti) just to get a full product that is only slightly faster, but then this product is also used to support the DL ecosystem as well so it is needed sooner rather than later anyway.

Cheers

For the first time in my life I am happy with my video card (1080 on 3440x1440).

As much as I love fiddling with new hardware until higher res VR comes out I don't have a need to upgrade. Pascal has the potential to be a monster and is tempting though!

We'll see what happens, but at this point in the cycle I'm not itching for another upgrade like I was with Maxwell. At this point I was already running into games that the Mitan was struggling with, so I was ready for the Pitan. But that could easily change in the next 6-9 months we still have to wait for consumer Volta.

And let's face it - new stuff is cool.

I have even been contemplating Vega recently - despite the fact that I just bought a 1080 Ti to play with after being bored with my Titan X (Pascal) cards. Trying to hold off and looking to snipe a 980 Ti on the cheap. They are still hovering around $400 on eBay which is annoying. Factor this in boyos...you can make good $$$ on your cards today due to this mining crap. Pick up a cheaper card to tide you over perhaps. I got a 1050 for a secondary box and I have been pretty impressed with it at $110.

I have a 1080Ti and game @ 4k/60Hz. I was planning on buying a 2nd card but now I'm just going to wait on Volta.

Release date will depend upon Vega, I think. If Vega performs well, we'll see Volta sooner rather than later. But with the 1080 Ti maxxing out 4K @ 60Hz, is there any point in buying a better GPU until the high-refresh rate 4K monitors come out?

Oh wait, there's that 8K monitor! :)

This is actually the first time in years that I didn't feel the need for more performance and skipped a GPU (Titan Xp). I'm waiting for Volta but definitely don't care when it comes out. Until I get my 4k 144hz display.

I just hope they don't ditch regular displayport with mini displayport.

If it's cable compatibility, they make native mini-dp -> DP cables so you don't need adapters. For like, $10 bucks or less on Amazon. Not a bad deal, if space on the back of the card is at a premium for other connectors or heat venting.

And funnily enough 33% bigger die. 815mm² vs 610mm²
They didn't get much out of this small node jump considering...
You mean like adding Tensor Cores, making it possible to do Int32 and FP32 concurrently, totally changed the structure of cache to global memory, 50% more NVLink2 IO interfaces (this requires on-chip circuitry),greater functionality with the Unified Memory, etc :)
That said yeah the node jump was in reality just an enhanced 16nm rather really being 12nm, so a lot of it comes back to Volta rather than the node.
Cheers

I know they won't do it but I'd pay good money for a 815mm^2 gaming GPU...

In theory the GV102 should be around 600mm2 this time round, and if so would mean a nice boost for gaming GPUs, but the price Nvidia will charge will have some grumbling and others hesitant I think.

Cheers

We should start a bet regarding Volta's max clocks. Will it be able to go higher than Pascal's 2Ghz wall?

Everyone that thinks 1k for a graphics card is a 'fair' price is out of their mind.

Once the halo cards became over 499-599 is when we were officially getting completely screwed. The amount of markup at this level is atrocious, and as long as people are willing to take it up the pooper with a big grin the market will continue to feed you shit for breakfast. Mining has done nothing but destroy the graphics card market for video game players, creating artificially inflated pricing of every generation in the last 5 years. I know everyone wants the lastest and greatest, and I was once a fool that upgraded from a 7800 GTX sli to 7900 GTX sli for a few more frames in BF2, but the runaway halo market is abhorrent at best at the moment.

You would just get slower performance at your desired price bracket and you can already buy that. I dont see the issue besides you may feel you belong in a higher group than you do? And since the GTX7900 wages here have gone up 35-40% or so.

It's worth what your willing to pay.

I may not be willing to pay $1,200 a card, but that may be more than justified to someone else.

nVidia is just charging whatever the market will bear, and that's perfectly legit.

Even second hand resellers, those who just flip cards on opening day - they really are just doing the same thing (getting what the market will bear), it's just they are taking advantage of supply and demand and are able to respond more rapidly to changes in demand than an MSRP is able to.

We are talking about a luxury item, not something like the cure to cancer or a loaf of bread. If you can't afford it, oh well, you ~can~ live without it.

NVIDIA created a new category with the TITAN - the x80 series still has a similar price to the prices that you quoted. Buy what you can afford and the performance you want.

They did not create a new category, they sold a lower tiered product as their flagship, then sold their halo product at a $1000 premium, instead of making it the refresh it actually was. This has been heavily documents throughout the Geforce node changes and evolutions.

Even though that may be true, it's only viable because AMD never had an answer for it. We're also only talking about it because we're privy to that information in this case; companies get away with this kind of bait-and-switch all the time in any industry.

Welcome Intels TWO THOUSAND DOLLAR CPU that should have by now been the standard 3-400$ market chip had AMD not rolled over and died for a good 5 years+

The sad part there is, even though AMD is now more than competetive in the CPU market. Intel still hasn't lowered there CPU prices, not in this part of the world anyway.
