So my 6800k died on me. I have to RMA it to intel. They will send me a new one. My question is what should I do with the CPU? Should i sell it and the asus x99 deluxe ii and go skylake x or should I just stick with the 6800k and save money or wait for 6850k or 6900k prices to plummet and buy that instead?

X299 vs x99 doesn't seem like much of an upgrade. This vid compares 7820k vs 6900k vs 1700. The difference is......underwhelming.

Oth. what is a new 6800k with respect to a new mb and skylakex cpu. The ram is the same I suppose.

Might consider one of the Xeon chips for your x99. You can buy them cheap on eBay. Especially the engineering samples.

I guess I'll be the first to ask. What do you do with your computer? What applications do you run? Do you game? Do you use a lot of multithreaded programs?

A better suggestion by far, if such xeons exist. I didnt think of that at all.

ES Xeon chips aren't overclockable (maybe some QS samples can, but they are almost as expensive as the retail chips), yet the 16XXV3's can be multiplier overclocked (the V4s are now multiplier locked, so not real overclocking). I've actually got an 8C/16T 1660V3 up on the FS section.

If you don't need to overclock and need lots of cores for cheap, then yes ES Xeons are a great deal.

You should sell me the 6800K for $150 and move on to Skylake my friend.

I mainly do lightroom and premiere pro stuff. Not really gaming much anymore

I've heard of CPU's being killed but never dying. I too would like to know how. The 6800K is the last of the 'Soldered' 6 cores.

According to intel it was because I overclocked the ram to 3200 mhz. It just stopped working. Went to microcenter and they diagnosed it as dead cpu
