Say Goodbye to These Windows 10 Features in the Fall Creators Update

I just used that backup to save my ass from their cluster of an upgrade for the Insiders Preview, and now it may be removed soon so I have to shell out a bunch of money for a 3rd party app. Ridiculous. MS is a case study in bait and switch marketing tactics and hating people and only pursuing money.
File History replaces the older Backup and Restore panel and has better functionality.

And if you're really using a beta version of Windows and then whining when stuff goes wrong, you're a very "special" person.

Wow such angst on here, and the internet in general. Does file history get all your applications back? Can you restore from file history after the hard disk has died?

I am on the Insiders Preview to see what is on the next version of Windows and it is a test PC that I have nothing of import on. Is there anything else I can let you know about? Kind of nice to throw the "beta" card and exonerate MS behavior of writing crap code, firing all their testers and expecting users to do all the leg work.

I take "special" as a compliment, and have accolades to show for it. Not bragging but you brought it up.

Yeah File History can do full OS backups :)

Sorry you don't like me. I do speak my mind and if people don't listen to what I request, the world will fix it, I don't have to do a thing. If you are on MS side, I hate to tell you this, you aren't in the majority.
I'm definitely not on MS' side, we just have different ways of solving problems. I suggest finding the right people to speak you mind to, speaking your mind to a wall will get you just as far as what you're doing now. Support has no control over the shit you're complaining about, and there's no way in hell it makes it that far up the ladder. If you honestly think there's a chance of your voice being heard through a support line of all places, you need to dial back that ego. Support wont think your idea or suggestion is special, just chock you up to another pissed off customer.

I had a support chat with MS a few months ago and proceeded to rip the support guy a new one. I asked why they were removing so many features, had reneged on so many promises, were a case study in the stupidity of corporate management, etc etc etc. I asked him to tell the board of directors and every MS exec what my complaints were. I hope they got to see my rant. It was epic. The person was so dumbfounded most of the questions they did not even attempt to answer. What a mess of a company.
Back when I did phone tech support, we used recorded calls like yours as the test case of "Let them rant. If you can't clearly discern the actual technical support reason for their call, tell them you are unable to help them and politely end the call."

I 100% guarantee you, you're not solving anything with calls like that, except for training people how to not talk to you. Your call doesn't get anywhere outside of the support desk. The absolute highest level person to hear your screams is the manager of that group of support people. Good job, you mildly annoyed someone with a title slightly above "fry cooker at McDonalds."

How many of you have actually TRIED Linux?

Here, I'll make it easy for you : https://www.ubuntu.com/download

I have a linux server that I use for my security system, file sharing, plex server etc... It only takes me about 5 hours to google how to do the most basic stuff on linux but once you get it working it's rock solid and works without human intervention forever.

I have also tried their "end user" distributions like Linux Mint and it's so bad compared to Windows that it's laughable.

I like a complete backup that I can kick off at anytime, and not need another drive connected all the time to backup the files. To each his own. I think file history is an ok solution, but not what I am looking for.

This article states: File History doesn’t offer the ability to do a full system backup but for those users who may need a full system backup it offers a good compromise. Together with other features introduced in Windows 8 it provides protection against such disasters.

When your PC is replaced or needs to be reinstalled:

  1. Use the recovery drive to restore the operating system
  2. Connect to your Microsoft account
  3. Configure your PC to sync your settings – this will bring your settings back
  4. Go to the Store and reinstall your modern apps
  5. Reinstall legacy apps
  6. Connect your old File History drive and restore everything – this will restore your personal files
It may require more steps than a file or image restore but has some clear benefits:

  • You do not restore any “no more desired” software or settings that were on your system
  • You do not restore sources of some problems that you might have (or create new problems if you restore to different hardware)
  • You do not restore settings that may cause your system to perform badly or fail
Those who need a full system backup can still use Windows Backup to create a system image.

Does File History protect the operating system and applications?
File History only protects user libraries, desktop, favorites and contacts. Other files, such as operating system files, applications, and settings, are not backed up.

Funny I use paint allot to edit photos. So today reading forum I try to load paint3d.....crash , close.
Back to paint and load...works.
Tried to do a reset on paint3d and same.
Dumb windows 10 apps seem to break all the time but the true trusted stand alones seem to just work.
I had to do a in place upgrade last week to get app store and feedback to work.

I fell asleep trying to read and understand what you're trying to say, so just tell me what's the solution to restore my system and files and everything EXACTLY the way it was the day before in an hour

Paint took one second to load. Paint3D takes 3. It's the same as what happened to the calculator. I hope Notepad stays as it is.
How can they design a whole new-generation platform that takes longer to load even on the simplest <2MB programs?

Really, did you know that I sent letters to the board of directors, and Microsoft executives? Funny how this world is full of such bs, the help desk claims they will forward your complaints, I am smart enough to know they won't. I've about had it with all the lies and corruption in this world, its people like you and help desk workers that want to ignore someone for expressing their true feelings, and telling me what I do that is worthless that causes so much problems. Is it OK if they don't even listen? Change the world or lie in the bed you made.

Reading comprehension.

Because it's better. Now when it opens it calls Microsoft, waits for a response, transmits the size and type of file it's trying to open, waits for a response and then opens. You know, better.

Dang, here I thought Paint.NET would finally get the love it deserves

I was most surprised by them removing System Image Backup. Thats a pretty big thing to remove, unless they have something new to replace it. Currently Windows 10 has no "native" alternative. File History just does files, it won't recreate a drive from scratch (I don't think at least)...Windows 10 even points you to System Image if you need that functionality.

Microsoft Windows (tm). Application requires you to join the global spy.. eh social media network and application may contain in-app purchases.

In this litigious world, you need to know alt-0153 off the top of your head. You will need to know it when you apply for you Internet Free Thought License.

The company I work for is a fraction of a percent the size of MS's, and if you put "BOARD OF DIRECTORS, SSZ'S COMPANY" on a letter and mailed it, it would (a) not be opened by any board member, and (b) the person paid to do that for them would filter it and it would go in the trash.

Your precious MS Board would never be made aware of any letter you sent them, regardless of who you believe you are. They have more important things to discuss than "triwolf's complaints." Executives are worth so much per minute that the mundane task of "opening an envelope" would be a cash-negative activity. That isn't a thing they do.

Yes, but people like Zinn and helpdesk workers are willing to lie cheat and steal and claim things that are completely provable as wrong, hoping you won't do research so you can be defeated. Be careful out there, this world is in serious serious trouble, too many liers.

Enjoy your future of doing whatever these people make you do. I warned you.

You have been warned. ha, ha ha, hahaha. Warned you have been.

On a more serious note.
What ice cream goes good with micro brew?
Patriarchy Peppermint Pistachio paired with a nice chocolate porter or Beer Bash Banana and hoppy ipa.

So you are like Golum in Lord of the Rings. I guess you also really like the Dark Side, etc. Have a great life. I do the best I can to be a good person although there aren't many left in the world. If negativity works for you, go for it. I hope they don't decide to outsource you as soon as they can, or replace you with a bot. Oh wait, they are planning that at the moment. What comes around goes around. Most jobs will be automated in 20 years. Research the industrial revolution to see your future. It's not going to be microbrew, I will bet. I'd start saving now.

To get back on topic, the TPM stuff being torn out.. it's about time. That stuff in Windows is *so* scary to anyone non-technical (and even to many people that are) and now that encryption is a popular thing and they will likely push for Bitlockering more installs like Apple with FileVault (they default to enabled out-of-box if you login to iCloud), they really gotta make the TPM stuff less complex and technical. Just do it for me Microsoft. Just.. do it for me.

The other stuff is probably more interesting to developers or companies that deploy specialized images. I'm all about thin imaging so my deployment install.wim is virtually stock (just some Start menu tweaks cuz jeez MS just vomit stuff all over the menu).

A buddy of mine is beyond bleeding-heart Libertarian, I mean it's REALLLLLY annoying, and yet the real world trumps the fantasy world he'd rather live in, so he works for Google. He loathes it, but passion for the cause doesn't pay for rent or food. He has his own agenda, but he can show the Gollum face to the people that pay him to show it. It's not his only face.

It's not my only face.

I use IrfranView as my default image viewer, it can also do basic text, cropping and painting.

For more advanced options (photo work) I use Rawtherapee and gimp

MicroSoft wants you too download and use apps from now on. An old copy of Paint Shop Pro works well with Windows 10 once you get past the welcome screen

who actually uses a screensaver these days? Having just gone and looked at what's there its no loss anyway. The included ones are crap.

I'm not one to freak out much about Win10 stuff, at least I try not to, but it does seam that MS is going nuts.

Just loaded up Paint 3D because admittedly I've never used it before. As soon as I did I got an alert about a new outbound connection from painstudio.view.exe Strike #1

The interface looks like its designed for a child which is ok. Made things easy enough to locate and figure out their purpose. I was easily able to locate the resize/scale effects which are the main reason I use paint.

It appears to be an app which might be an issue in the future when we fully embrace Windows 10 for enterprise and cut the Store from our images. Strike #2?

Over all its not bad. Its a little more complicated than paint just because it wants to integrate into other things but strikes 1 and 2 are concerning.

I'll mostly try and figure out if I can extract and side-load paint onto something else. Hell I did it with the vista calendar my wife's grandma loved so much. That damn thing lived and died with vista but I've made it work with each new computer she's got. Couldn't believe it just worked when Windows 10 decided to install itself on her all in one.

First they came for the Start Menu, and I did not speak out—
Because I use classicshell.

Then they came for Windows Backup and Restore, and I did not speak out—
Because I backup to the clould.

Then they came for Paint, and I did not speak out—
Because I use gimp.

Then they came for me—and I switched to Linux.

I personally am not a Libertarian, I would like people to respect each other more, though. A big problem with our world is basically everyone is just like your friend. We have to do whatever it takes to make it, and it's not pretty. There is a book that talks about that, and how you are not supposed to love this world, and a few other life lessons people seem to have forgotten. You might of heard of it, it's a really old book that most people say is lies. If you actually read it and take what it says to heart, you start to see what this world is about. Not material things, but about energy, and light and truth. Rant over.
