LG 43UD79 Information?

I just received this monitor a few days ago and I'm very happy with my purchase. The uniformity in LED backlight is nearly perfect and beyond my expectations given the price point ($599 on sale). There's no IPS glow or bleed in the corners like so many other monitors (including a 38" ultrawide Acer I replaced with this).

As for PWM, I had assumed LG's 'Flicker Safe' implied this was a PWM-free model. I recorded a 120fps video using my iPhone and didn't notice any pronounced shimmer/strobing like on the Dell 43" monitor. I run it at 35% brightness and no headaches or eye strain so I'm assuming this does use DC regulation to control LED brightness.

Post pics! :) I'm literally almost ready to click the buy button on this..

I just verified this monitor has some pretty massive PWM action. I noticed it as soon as I fired it up.

Might be returning this thing. Bummer. Love the real estate, but this is a 8hr/day monitor...

Nice fraudulent "flicker free" claims by LG.

I'd appreciate it if you could also test for image retention. Although this panel is supposedly different to the one used by Philips and Dell for the 43" models...

I used it for 9 days straight with a static taskbar and didn't notice any IR. I've returned it so unfortunately I can't post any pics.

If this is the LG PWM why I can't simulate any of the camera? As it is here on video for model Dell P4317Q.

There is bad PWM, per the UFO test, all the way up to full brightness. I'm showing like 4 separate bars on the UFO test and my eyes confirm it. Pretty fatigued after about 4hrs of use.

Is there ANY 40/43 IPS/AG monitor without PWM?

Just due to the fact that LG in the specification it says that the monitor is Flicker Safe I bought it. All the other 43 are pwm.

Can someone please make a short recording device 240fps in brightness from 100 to 0 and somewhere the raw data upload thank you very much.

I've been using the LG 43UD79 for over a month now and can confirm that it definitely uses PWM by the UFO test (https://www.testufo.com/#test=blurt...thickness=2&height=480&ppf=16&separation=1000) - when brightness is set to 100, there are single moving vertical lines, and as brightness is decreased, groups of 3-4 shadow lines around each line appear.

However, it's possible that the PWM frequency of the LG monitor is higher than the Dell monitor, so it might not show up on video or be apparent in normal use.

The Dell has a horribly low PWM frequency (~120hz). I believe this was addressed in a firmware update, but I don't know how much it has changed...

Damn, that sucks... I believe the 43" Philips uses DC for regulating brightness https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/philips-bdm4350uc/

Same with the Acer 430TK and the Viewsonic 43" - but, all 3 of these use the TP-Vision panel with the notorious image retention issues...

Any confirmation on the DELL 43 getting PWM resolved with Firmware? I'm in a buy n try mode right now. I cannot do 120hz. But if the DELL got bumped up, it may still work.

Supposedly those PWM-sensitive folks like myself have issues all the way up until 700-800hz. My Z30i has PWM, but it's at 1000hz or something - I don't even notice it.

This LG, I noticed right away, unfortunately.

Well, sadly it seems that currently, there is no single 43" 4K monitor that checks both of the boxes - no PWM and no image retention. Brahmzy, could you upload a video of the pwm flicker? Someone should hold LG accountable for false advertising :/

As for the Dell, I don't think they could bump the pwm frequency too high just via a firmware update - so I'm guessing it will still bother you if you're sensitive.

EDIT: http://www.wsgf.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=82&t=32183 this reviewer states that his p4317q with the latest firmware did not exhibit bothersome PWM flicker...

Just flashed a p4317Q's firmware to the latest. Did before and after testing. The PWM was as bad or worse than the LG's before the flash. After the flash, I immediately noticed a difference, but did the UFO Ghost test and PWM is absolutely still present in DELL's latest firmware. It's hard to tell how the 2 differ now. I don't have the ability to have a lot of seat time behind the DELL.
At 100% brightness, with the new p4317q firmware, there is no PWM, unlike the LG which does still have some PWM at 100% brightness.

This LG probably uses high frequency PWM - some go as high as 22 Khz. If the flickering is this rapid, there is absolutely no way you can see it, BUT it may cause headache after long use.

Oh I can see it immediately. No way it's that high. I'm thinking more like 240hz or something.. it's not as fatiguing as my Samsung @ 120hz, but it's close..

This is disappointing... Can you make a short movie at 240fps? Or anyone else?

The request is addressed to everybody :)

It's sharp - all 444 60hz stuff. You need to research PWM and see if you have an issue with it. If so, might want to skip this one..

Someone already wrote to LG support that they are deceiving the customers parameter Flicker free?
I'm starting to have sensitivity to the sun and slowly me it burns your eyes after 5 days of use. P

I've written to LG Support explaining my disgust at their fraudulent marketing. I have yet to receive a reply beyond the canned "we'll get back to you shortly."

So I just got a Sony X800D. It's a keeper! Lovely display. NO PWM. Beautiful colors/contrast.

It's going to replace my 40JU7500 @ home. I will order a X800E for work.

^^ Nice find!! Just goes to show how valid that UFO Ghosting PWM test really is. Even at 100% brightness, the LG flickered to my eyes and the test.
I think LG needs to made an example of somehow. I like how they use the words 'Flicker Safe' not 'Flicker Free'. That totally gets them out of any accountability.

I did the UFO blur trail test and if I focus on the line it does separate into four individual lines. I'm surprised because the monitor otherwise is great. Tried the same on my Macbook Retina (non-PWM) and it's a solid/wider line. LG is being intentionally deceptive in its technical specifications by labeling this monitor as 'Flicker Safe' which most likely equates to this monitor simply running at a higher PWM frequency.

"Flicker Safe mode further alleviates vision fatigue" - from LG site.

So "Flicker safe" is a way to sell a real drawback and make it look like a good thing :)

And all perfect with 4:4:4? Would it make sense to upgrade to a 49" in the 900 series?

That's what I'm considering. Rtings.com has a score of 8.0 for the X900E, the only highest scores as a monitor are the OLEDS which are over a grand more.

I guess that's one advantage of being poor, I can, have to, wait lol

Yes 444/60 good to go on all Sonys. If you can fit the 49 as a monitor, by all means do it. Too big for my spot..

My main is a 75" Sony 940D. Beautiful set. Love the Sonys.

Do you mean that you use it as computer screen also or just TV?

This superbly equipped LG I had to because of unpleasant feelings in the eyes go back the dealer. Be careful when using PWM hi. Pet

Guys, is this the best 40-43" monitor right now? If not, what would you recommend? I know the Phillips one has ghosting issues and the Dell is rather underwhelming. Are there TVs with decent response times?

I'd appreciate your input.

Best 43" are the Sony X800D (VA) and X800E (IPS) TVs.

If response time is paramount this is a bit better than the Sony TVs. The picture quality from the Sonys is better and I believe the Sonys don't use PWM dimming, but I could be wrong on that. I think the Sonys also have some limited 120 HZ at 1080p capability.

Also, if the PIP, PWP, and KWM features are useful to you, this is much better than the Sonys.

The other 40+" monitors out there are all worse or similar to this.
