Rift announces "Summer Sale", drops Rift + Touch price to $400

Pretty sweet price for both the Rift + Touch! I was playing the Lone Echo/Echo Arena beta over the weekend and I have to say that I can see the future of E-sports definitely heading in this direct. Mind blowingly immersive - whacked a few things with my controllers, but luckily didnt break anything. I need a bigger VR space!

I've already put a couple dents in the wall thanks to Echo Arena and yet my Touch controllers remain unscathed (which says a lot about their construction). Last night I found redrawing the guardian lines a foot or so away from the actual boundary helped a lot.

Also saw this deal....am greatly interested. I saw Minecraft Windows 10 version natively works as well....I'm sure my son would go bonkers for that alone.

If you go to Best Buy, you get a free EVE: Valkyrie game

There is also vivecraft which lets you use the Java version in VR with full oculus and vive support (even to the point you can fight and mine by swinging your arms instead of just holding buttons) and also supports regular java version mods

Oh. My. GOD.

It's right in the range of what I want to spend. It's. Right. F!@#ing There.

But, I don't want to add to my credit card bill.

Big Head: If it's on sale like this now, it'll be on sale again.
Credit Card: If it's on sale now, it'll be on sale years down the road.

Big Head:
Then the next big thing with generation 2 headsets will be out
Credit Card: Have you see the improvements between Apple phones? You'll be waiting much longer than that for anything meaningful. Maybe it'll come in different colors. Fool.

Big Head:
Camo Blue would be pretty awesome...
Credit Card: You know that the touch is really good. You've tried it. You've drooled on Best Buy's floor like a young kid looking at Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit edition.

Big Head:
Heidi Klum was pretty hot.
Small Head: Mah Bro.

Credit Card:
Think of the racing games. You've wanted to play racing games. That's why you bought three 30 inch monitors. For the immersion. Think of the immersion!
Big Head: Driving a new Viper GTS would be pretty awesome.

Credit Card:
V10, baby.
Big Head: But you'll need to buy a racing wheel. Driving on the keyboard sucks hard. And you just spent a lot of money on the Steam Sale.

Credit Card:
...I don't even know who you are anymore.
Big Head: :(

I had a Vive, sold it because it was too heavy, the room scale thing was a pain (for my smaller room) so I picked up an Oculus Rift Touch at BB today. OMFG its amazing. The display looks better than the Vive (no weird lense rings), it's lighter, the tracking is just as good if not better, plus the curated nature of the Rift store is just better than Steam. I played VR for like 6 hours today lol, took a break to go run 6 miles then went right back in.

Highly recommend to anyone thinking about it, this price point is what they should have been all along.

I picked up the Oculus Rift + Touch Controllers + $100 Amazon Gift Card last night off Amazon Prime Day for $399 on impulse.

Figured at essentially $299 it's finally worth a try.

Is camo gray close enough?

Snagged one! My God, I love Mages Tale! I can't wait to get home and play this. Been a looooong time since I felt that way about a game.

I bought one at Best Buy
Oculus - Rift Virtual Reality Headset, Touch Wireless Controllers & EVE: Valkyrie Game Package

Grabbed mine from bestbuy.ca unfortunately the Canadian one doesn't include eve but it shipped within 12 hours of ordering which is way better than waiting 4 days like the oculus store is doing right now

damn wish i wasn't working that day i would of grabbed it for that price, at that price it was definitely worth the impulse buy.

4 days is not bad. amazon.ca says 1 to 3 months. I couldn't see what oculus estimated for shipping cost, tax or shipping times unless I actually processed an order. any idea what shipping was, and where are you? I am in atlantic Canada, St. John's.

Oculus was 0 tax and 0 delivery, bestbuy was $0 delivery and $25 tax (hurray for only 5% sale tax lol) to Alberta but I called bestbuy about that and they knocked $30 off to cover the difference

It's been a week and every Best Buy in DFW shows to be sold out now.....shows like the 26th as the next available date. There are around 20 stores in DFW.

bit the bullet and ordered from oculus direct last night. let's see when tracking shows up...amazon.ca now says 1 to 4 months. i did ask support about which bundle will be sent (with or without xbox controller and remote as website doesnt list them anymore in the bundle) and reply was will be included while stocks last. fingers crossed.

i definitely preferred the vive's lighthouse option without cables all over the place vs USB cables running everywhere, but not at the price difference today. CDN$549 all in vs CDN$1,250+ after shipping and maybe taxes extra.

edit: Ordered 17th, still no shipping on the 21st :( Must have had amazing sales.

I bought one, not having huge expectations, never tried VR, and was kind of skeptical...

Holy Crap guys this thing is amazing, it's like being on the f'ing Holo Deck

$400 is a steal, if I known it was this good I would of gotten it on release

^^^ Pretty much this for folks that have never tried it and expected a 3D TV like experience. What blows my mind is that this is just Gen 1 VR. I want Gen 3 VR so that I can throw away all of my monitors. :D

I have been playing with technology since my first 8088 processor in high school. I have to say using my new Rift VR is right up there with some of the most exciting PC experiences in the last 30 years.

I can see why our fearless leader Kyle Bennett jumped on this tech right from the start.

I see the rift as gen 2 imo, way I see it:
DK1 - Gen 1 prove it works, super niche meant for diehards
Dk2 - gen 1.5
Cv1 - gen 2 actually ready for mainstream
Touch controllers - gen 2.5

It would be hard to think about the system without Touch. It does make sense in games like driving or flying simulators to prefer the xbone controller. But actually seeing your hands in front of you is part of the immersion. Lone Echo is really good with the arm simulation, it's not tracking your arms, but it approximates your arm movement based on your hand position and rotation realistically enough that it seems accurate if you don't stop and focus on it (or set your hands down).

Oh also, if at least one Touch controller isn't turned on, the First Contact tutorial (trailer park Nintendo ROB) will not be visible in your library. Once you touch a button on one of the controllers, the two tutorials will pop up. Dreamscape or whatever the other tutorial is will always be visible.

And from a general VR perspective, the current CV1 and Vive are more like generation 5 or so to me because of how long I've been following this market since I was just a '90s kid.

Gen 1: Virtuality arcade systems (the sort you'd play stuff like Dactyl Nightmare on), Forte VFX-1 and VFX3D, Virtual i-O i-glasses! VPC, Victor CyberMaxx
Gen 2: eMagin Z800, Vuzix VR920
Gen 3: Sony HMZ-T1/T2, Oculus Rift DK1
Gen 4: Oculus Rift DK2, Sony HMZ-T3, Silicon Microdisplay ST1080, SA Photonics SA-83S
Gen 5: Oculus Rift CV1, HTC Vive, Sony PSVR

Note that there's a ton of HMDs I'm missing, as well as tracked hand controllers aside from the one in the Virtuality systems since while they existed, they were hardly affordable for the mass market in the way that even the $800 Rift + Touch and Vive were.

So, yeah, it's safe to say that what we're getting now for just $400 is an outright bargain compared to what you would've had to pay back then, and the resolution and FOV of the CV1 is so much better than your typical '90s HMD it's ludicrous!

Sucks they are romoving xbox control from the packages. I got bestbuy one that does come with it

The Xbox controller is irrelevant. I've used it about as often as the remote, and it's not like you can't pick one up if you need it.

Probably get more use out of a driving wheel or HOTAS

what are the lengths of the cable for the HMD and the 2 sensors? trying to plan installation and cable purchases to extend.
Thanks.

The HMD's cable is 12'. Sensor cables are 8'.

Generally speaking any old extension cable isn't going to work. Check HERE for a list of known working cables.

As far as USB3 cables go, I'm using UGREEN 6' and 10' (3 M) Cable Matters without any issues. Both can be found for cheap through Amazon. You won't need to look at active USB3 cables until you get to over 10'.

4 meters (Rift HMD), 2.5 meters (Sensors). The extra camera sensor (separate purchase) also comes packaged with one additional Monoprice USB 2.0 Active extension cable (15'). More good info here as to cables and roomscale needs: https://www.oculus.com/blog/oculus-roomscale-extra-equipment/

My advice, stay away from the 16' or longer active cables if you don't need them as they can really be hit or miss as to working or not... These cables have worked really well for me and they are dirt cheap for USB 3.0 extensions... go with the shortest length you really need:
9.8': https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Extension-Cable-Male-Female/dp/B00NH12O5I/
6' (2 pack!): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014RWATK2/
3.3': https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Extension-Cable-Male-Female/dp/B00NH13UFQ/

Tip: Don't try and extend the HMD by much more than another 6'. (Besides the 6' USB extension above, you'll also need a 6' HDMI cable extension as well.)

Note that ~18 feet is close to the upper limit as to max length you can get away with when using USB 3.0 with non-active cables or without a repeater) If you need to run one sensor much longer than the others, I'd recommend a quality downstream USB 3.0 powered hub over rolling the dice with a long active cable extension. I went through three different 16 footers before I found one that would work.... and it's slightly iffy in that even though it's an active USB 3.0 extension cable, it typically only holds up with a USB 2.0 connection - which is good enough for the sensor to work.

Edit: Yup, not the Touch, but the extra camera sensor purchase is what comes with the15 foot active USB 2.0 Monoprice extension cable.

The Touch used to also come packaged with one additional Monoprice USB 2.0 extension cable (15'), but I'm not sure if that is still included in the new combined packaging - it may still be.

Touch never came with an extension cable. Extra (stand alone) sensors DO come with a 15' active Monoprice USB 2.0 extension cable.

thanks. will measure what I need this weekend. hoping I'm good for hmd length. from what I read only the stand alone sensor comes with the 15' USB2 cable. did the touch/sensor come with any additional cable? still have not ordered the stand alone sensor yet. should get on it.

all documentation talks about max 2 USB3 sensors on a controller. what about the hmd usb3 connector? is that ok with 2 USB3 sensors on 1 controller, 3rd sensor being on usb2. I have the xbox controller connected via Bluetooth.

hmmmm, crap! HMD needs an additional 4 feet or so.
USB3 cable for sensor 2 needs 15 feet. will need to get that.
USB2 cable for sensor 3 needs 25 feet for neat routing. Can I couple a the 15ft monoprice cable that comes with the standalone sensor with another of the same cable for 30ft, or would that not be good for USB2?

I wish I could move the PC to a different area, but not that easy. Might be able to but then means getting a USB hub for peripherals for my work area.

Will need to break out the sketchbook and work it out lol.

The rift HMD can actually be used on a USB 2 port. Way I have mine setup is two sensors go to my USB 3 pcie expansion card and my rift + third sensor goes to my mobo USB 2 ports and it works perfect. I read that the recent updates lowered the bandwidth requirements for a lot of their stuff which reduces CPU usage as well as hardware requirements.

Makes me happy because my mobos USB 3 ports are low powered and seem to have issues with just an external hdd.
