Torrentfreak reports of HBO tracking torrent swarms of its popular show, Game of Thrones. The show's seventh season started this past Sunday. Through its anti-piracy partner IP Echelon, the company has sent warning messages to ISPs of would-be pirates. The message states the alleged users IP address and warning of the unauthorized sharing including a notice of possibly subscribing to service through their television package. The company is not well known for going after suspected torrent users; only wonderful artwork by kids, but be warned.

The warnings in question include the IP-addresses of alleged BitTorrent users and ask the associated ISPs to alert their subscribers, in order to prevent further infringements.

Under US copyright law, ISPs are not obligated to forward these emails, which are sent as a DMCA notification. However, many do as a courtesy to the affected rightsholders.

Perhaps if there was a way to watch Game Of Thrones without subscribing to a media empire owned by fuhrer Murdoch, the destroyer of western civilisation, than people wouldn't be forced to pirate the series?

Just a thought.

I'm in sweden and have a subscription to HBO Nordic. Problem is that they have no viable players for any of my equipment other than my Android Phone. Neither my TV, UHD BD player, or HTPC has a working player (the one on PC has horrible quality, especially in audio). So I've been paying them since day one, but to see their content I have to download what I want to see. Netflix on the other hand has wonderfully working UHD-capable players on nearly every gadget and equipment I have. As soon as HBO gets their player structure up on more devices, then I will stop downloading their stuff, not that that is wrong as I pay them anyway, but it would be nice to be able to actually use their service...

That'd be BETTER than not being ABLE to be subscribed at all, which is currently my main problem.

Support Sky Go or now TV on Nvidia Shield Android TV, or don't sell it through Sky who charge people 70 quid a month for a massive pile of shit with one diamond on top.

Give us decent, well priced access to HBO online in th UK and I'll sign up today.

That's not going to happen, so in the meantime, I'll just have to wait. Exclusive deals are fucking cancer. I can buy the Blurays for the price of one month of Sky bullshit.

HBO certainly has some of the best shows, problem is they just dont have enough of them. Even with them finally getting around to offering a standalone streaming service, I cant justify $15/month for one show released on a weekly basis. Maybe, just maybe I'd do the binge watch thing and subscribe/unsubscribe after finishing a series if they released it all at once, but until they get their heads out of this whole broadcast TV model I'm not havin it. Netflix had this problem for awhile until they finally had enough content to keep people on regular subscriptions. Basically it was less convenient to keep restarting your membership because there was always something around the corner for you to watch. But HBO is Game of Thrones right now, thats it, thats all they are known for.

HBO is convinced that people are likely to maintain memberships if bought through their cable plans. Thing is those people who subbed to HBO probably would keep those plans even after GoT is over, but what about all the millions of dollars they could get from people if they let us binge watch the series on HBO NOW? They get the streamer's money and the cable-package money, best of both worlds. Cable TV watchers arent going to cancel and streamers arent going to sub for episodic releases. Give everyone what they want and everyone including HBO profits.

Just stay away, if you don't want to support the company.
But let me guess....you feel "entitled" to watch the show anyways?

And those letters mean absolutely nothing, just toss them in the trash.

Then go pay a few bucks for a proper VPN service and never get them again.

Oatmeal describes the situation perfectly - I have no problem paying for good shit, I just refuse to pay for the other 90% bundled shit I have no interest in.

Amazon Prime streaming, Hulu, Netflix, all reasonably priced for decent/good content. Happy to pay.

Want me to get fucked in the ass for $100/month just so I can enjoy HBO legally via cable? Fuck you. There's an entire untapped market out there for pick and choose your shows package, they just refuse to join the 21st century model of business. Perhaps because they know that if people were allowed to pay for what they wanted, that other 90% of shows in Mega XXL cable package wouldn't get a damn bit of funding because nobody wants all that shit.

My steam library, my amazon order history, my google play history, are all perfect examples of how much MORE someone is willing to purchase when it's accessible and reasonable.

You can watch it on hulu for 15 bucks on top of your hulu subscription.Same with amazon prime, it's also sold in google play/amazon as individual seasons atleast if you're in the US.

Isn't HBO now a thing now too?

I may have a friend who still leaches off his wife's parent's cable account for HBO GO but due to the popularity of GOT and history of the first episode being virtually un-streamable for the first hour after its airing, said friend purchased a month of HBO on his DirecTV account just to watch the first episode live.

Now that DirecTV made it easy to just add HBO it was well worth it for me. I mean my friend.

These companies need to realize the easier they make it to watch the more likely people are going to just buy it. So long as its for a reasonable price. You're still gonna get the pirates who pirate just for the hell of it but the general population just wants things easy.

People share their logins publicly all the time. Didn't Andy samberg give his out not long ago?

So GoT is the most pirated show in history with bonus content by sending out the most warnings for watching it too. ;)

That The Oatmeal comic is a bit dated, because you DO have access to other services, and HBO GO now. At the time however, it was totally accurate - the ONLY way was to have a cable sub.

HBO Go made the available torrents show up extremely fast...a friend I know saw one up at ~9:17pm that was 720p with no quality issues (aside from the episode itself being 6/10).

Hmmm .... does the expression - "I pirate because I can" - apply here? Perhaps.
Personally, I don't need to see it right away, nor do I need to pay subscription fees. Can easily wait for my Library to stock season 7. Have seen the entire series up to that point already. Taxes at work et all.

I was halfway through the show at that point.... usenet. Good luck sending me a letter when it's a direct HTTPS connection to a dedicated server outside the US. *hypothetically*

Tell that to Zuckerberg in regards to my personal data (and I don't even have an account!).

Okay. I hope this satisfies whatever point you were trying to make.

Hello Mr. Zuckerberg,

If you are reading this, I would like to tell you that the poster lilbabycat on hardforum.com takes exception to you having his/her personal data even though he/she doesn't have an account. Also, he/she would like to use the fact that you have his/her personal data as justification for downloading illegally.

Thank you,
theplaidfad

In a twist of irony, I am subscribed to HBO through my Spectrum cable subscription and I don't even watch or have watched the show.

Maybe IPT has a link just for fun!.

Yeah they're quick. I usually get the email about an hour after downloading any HBO content. Not that my ISP gives two squirts of piss what I download. As I, and many others, have said: if they amde HBO available in Canada like Nteflix is where I pay a fee per month without having to have a cable provider then I would be throwing money at them.

I tried watching GoT a few years ago but I couldn't make it through the first episode as it was so bad I just couldn't force myself to finish it. The only thing that has ever come from HBO that I even remotely liked was the Soprano's but I was never really into that either and only ever saw a few episodes. But to each their own I guess.

If you can't afford to pay for something, then how about just moving on from it? I love watching people with that self-entitlement mentality bitch about things like this.

there's a difference between not being able to pay for it and not wanting to be fucked up the ass. In Canada I have to have cable (which I don't) which is $60 a month, then I have to have a premium package which puts that up to $110 a month then I have the privilege of paying for HBO. Fuck that.

Being able to pay for it but not wanting to is still not a valid means of justifying it, and in my book that's even worse than not being able to afford it and using that as justification.

Stealing is stealing, whether you agree with it or not. They aren't forcing you give them your money.
