So to bring your up to speed: Apple sued Qualcomm in January, then Qualcomm countersued in April looking for a ban on iPhone sales, then Apple told manufacturers to withhold licensing payments, and Qualcomm sued Apple in May, and now four of Apple's manufacturing partners (Foxconn parent Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, Wistron Corp, Compal Electronics Inc, and Pegatron Corp) are launching and antitrust complaint (Sheman Act) against Qualcomm with Apple paying for their legal needs and has joined as a defendant. Got all that? Yawn.

The lost license revenue from Apple has been a hit to Qualcomm's sales. Analysts expect $5.2 billion in revenue for the June quarter, down from $6 billion a year earlier.

How is qualcomm a monopoly? Samsung is able to create their own chip (exynos) so why isn't apple? Even the chinese have that kirin chip.

As far as I can tell they aren't. They are hoping the combined lawyer and monetary resources will force Qualcomm to capitulate through legal attrition. The only reason they are suing is because it affects their bottom line as well.

It's not about the CPU portions of the phone. Qualcomm has incredibly deep patents on almost all aspects of wireless communication. They almost certainly have the same legal footing to sue Samsung if they wanted to open that can of worms too.

I'm not saying it is right. But there are always areas of overlap and grey areas in patents which open the door.

So, couldn't what Apple did here be considered a conspiracy, especially when in the end the actually finance the other companies legal actions?

Don't all of them use Qualcomm's patents though? If I remember correctly, Qualcomm has some patents for tech used in just about all cell phones.

It has nothing to do with their CPUs, and everything to do with their patents on wireless chips.

Apple has so much cash sitting in their off shore accounts, yet they are so greedy they can pay a few $ to properly license the tech?

Apple thy name is Greed.

Well, to be fair, that's what most corporations exist for. Make as much money as they can get their hands on, and pay out as little as possible. There's not a large corporation around that doesn't do SOMETHING underhanded. I'm not saying this excuses any of them, but it's hardly surprising, or limited to Apple. Some of my favorite products come from slimy corporations unfortunately.

Yeah, that was my first thought too. I hope they hold out and Apple gets a severe judgment against them in this case. What they are trying to do is beyond shitty (but happens every day)

Risky risky apple... If they lose it could hurt something awful I don't know.

billion dollar companies battling it out like billion dollar companies do.

don't care.

Ahh, good ol'Apple, pulling a page of MS book, by attacking another entity behind their buddies (ms cowardly attacks on google and linux, for the fanbois).

The reality is, i read before how ruthless qualcomm is when is about their telecommunications patents, so not surprising that someone finally had enough, assuming those rumors are true.

Why doesn't Apple just license from Arm, and build their own damn Chip. FK Qualcomm?

They do build their own chip with an ARM license.

Qualcomm owns a metric ton of patents regarding communication chips. You know, the part that makes your LTE, HSPA+, etc work :p I'm assuming this is what the lawsuit is about, not ARM CPU designs.

So Google, Microsoft and others are supporting Apple. Is it ok now or is this still a frivolous lawsuit?
