So I just got my 1080 ti. It's the EVGA black edition super clocked with ICX.

Started playing some games to enjoy my purchase. GTAV runs like a dream and every other game gets eaten up like peanuts, except Metro 2033.


Now Metro 2033 works fine as long as I dont max out SSAA and Tesselation. If maxed out the 1080 ti is under 100 percent load and gets up to the mid 80's and might jump to 90. As you might expect the gpu is throttled and it dips to the mid 40 fps at times. If I tone down those a bit, the 1080 ti's fans quiet down, the temps go down to the mid 60's and it hums along as if nothing happened.

Are those two graphical options just that demanding? And yes, I do see a pretty significant difference in graphical quality when I turn those down.

What resolution are you playing at? SSAA is supersampling antialiasing, so if you're gaming at 4k and enable it, the actual resolution the game renders at is going to be something like 8k.
Tesselation shouldn't really have that much of an impact.
 
1080 Ti's can run pretty hot, adjust your fan curves. I bought a FE card knowing it was best to watercool these cards and haven't regretted it one bit mine can sustain 2000+ mhz gaming indefinitely. with the FE cooler which is worse than the evga cooler even with fan maxed out the card will run hot and clock throttle. pascal cards begin to lower boost clocks very early on in temps say 50-55c onward the hotter the card gets the lower the core clock will be and if you are hitting temp limit you'll see even more performance devastating drops in clocks till it cools down enough to boost back up again. as for supersampling type settings depending on what res you are running and what game you will find there are limits to what a 1080 Ti can do. I can't for example run most games completely maxed out at 4K but if i turn AA off or even just drop it to lowest AA that is usually enough to keep my card around or above 60 fps but once again i'm watercooled and overclocked so i've got a bit more performance headroom due to good cooling.
 
That GPU should not be running 90c under any load, unless you've got serious case airflow problems, dead GPU fans, cooler was not installed properly, or your rig is in a furnace room.
 
I have a friend that has a 1080 and it's a freaking heater. Under gaming temps hit 84-87c with fans @ 90%. Even swapped out TIMs to no avail :(
 
Wow my 1080ti evga SC model only gets to around 70 with 60 percent on the fans, granted its under 80f in my room but geez those temps And i have a 20mhz offset so it pushes 1950 or so all the time.
 
Again, it only reaches those temps when playing Metro 2033 with those two settings maxed out. It stays in the mid 60's for everything else.

On a side note I'd like to get into custom water cooling to cool my CPU and GPU but also don't really have experience in that and don't want to spend another grand.
 
Thats what your card will do under full load.
Turn the fan up.
Also check hot air can get out of the case easily and that it isnt being recirculated back into the PC.
ie check the case airflow is good enough and that hot air has an escape route outside the PC and doesnt get sucked back in.

Yeah you should be running EVGA XOC with any of the 1080ti cards the default fan speed on the ICX EVGA cards might not be fast enough.

Agreed, performance drop with ssaa in a demanding game is expected. 90C on a 1080Ti is not.
 
Here I though the EVGA ICX cooler was fool proof meaning the fans run at a good speed to keep it cool. You could always check the thermal paste but It's usually good enough.
 
Get precision X software from eVGA and make custom a fan curve to be better at certain degrees. If I dont load that program, the temperature will be in 80C.

No Issues with my SC2. With everything default it has maxed out at 70C. With my power profile at 120% it went to 71C with power profile at 120% and +100MHz on the GPU it went to 72C
 
The only time I've seen a temp over 60c on my SC Black is when I accidentally left the fans off in Precision and booted up Andromeda. Got to 90 before I realized why everything was so quiet.

Usually I see 55c at 55% fan speed. Not hot and not too loud. And that's with an offset of 80/300 on 110% power.

It has the same cooler but none of the electronic control components since it uses a cheaper reference board with the SC2 cooler. I decided that the ICX temp monitoring with custom board was worth the $10 premium of the SC2 (at the time I bought it) when compared with the black edition.

That said, the temperatures are still higher than expected. Even without the extra temp monitoring it shouldn't be that hot. My SC2 tends to run <70C even under load (typically around 68 under full load) but I have a lot of fans in my case with great airflow.
 
I just cannot believe how good the Gigabyte cooler is this time around. Got one for around $20 over MSRP. No regrets. Or regerts if your tatooing and eating a milky way at the same time :p

Neither uses a reference board, since the ref board doesn't include DVI while both EVGA models do. Aside from that, the difference is the temp sensors and that fuze for people still paranoid about EVGA's product quality after they shipped those early 10 series cards with exploding caps(?). Oh and RGB LEDs. Other than that, same cards that function pretty much identically.

There are entirely too many GPU SKUs these days.
 
EVGA's smaller dual-fan heatsinks have always sucked. ICX improved component cooling and monitoring but I don't think they did anything for the GPU heatsink.
I would only use it for sub-200W cards. Anything else get something beefier.

70C is perfectly acceptable. That is cool enough to maintain Boost+ levels with over 10C to spare. Mine has never come close to throttling even down to the advertised boost clock much less base clock, and that's with the default profile. Is it the coolest running 1080Ti you can get? No. Is it the coolest running with the smallest foot print? Yes. The only other 2 slot card that I'm aware of that cools better than the EVGA SC2 is the EVGA FTW3, which is a bit longer
 
btw for S&G's what's GPUz say about your SC Black Edition, what's it's memory?? Mine doesn't arrive till the 25th :/
 
I'll parrot what others have said, while I haven't messed with EVGA software, the MSI software allows presets that activate once I launch a 3D game (basically over clocking, bumping up fan profile, etc) that defaults back to 2D mode (normal settings) when I am done gaming.

Try that as well.
