How Android Beat the iPhone to World Domination

What's with all this malware on Android talk ? Never had malware on either of my android phones ever. Then again I haven't had a virus on Windows in 17 years and counting either so maybe i'm just smarter than the average bear.
It's rather easy to avoid malware on Google Play Store if you just avoid downloading fringe apps.

I use Android and iOS devices. Both systems are excellent. The fanboy hate is pathetic.

Ditto.

I stopped using my Nexus 9 a long time ago, replaced with an iPad Air 2.

Granted, the locked down device is a pain in certain things, but the overall polish of the OS and device is a million times better.

Mind you, I had a N10 and then a N9, both are nowhere near close to the iPad (IMHO).

After dealing with Android devices since the Droid Eris and forced to start romming from the get go, since every single one of my devices were abandoned even before the 2 years mark, I am seriously considering in buying an iPhone.

Hell, just for shit and giggles, I installed IOS 11 on a very old iPhone 5S and it is very, very usable, even though is a rough beta.

Can't try that on my already abandoned Nexus 6....

My daughter's got an iPad Air 2, I by far prefer the N9 running the Pure Nexus ROM - But, as stated I can understand the attraction of the iPad.

I've also never had an issue with the build quality of the N9 (or the N10 as I had one of those also). As someone that repairs mobile devices I find the repairability of the N9 to be far better than that of the iPad and prefer the soft touch rear cover as opposed to cold, hard aluminium.

Another thing I can't stand is iTunes, put simply it's got to be one of the most painful software applications I've ever used, especially under Windows. Android also plays better with Linux and Linux is my main OS of choice. Furthermore, the Apple App Store has also been compromised with malicious applications in the past - Once again, I've never experienced, or known anyone to download a malicious application from official repositories - Has anyone ever experienced this or is it one of those things limited to click bait tech news?

I also love the fact that I can connect a Playstation controller to my N9 to play games, so much better than a touch screen - Playing HalfLife 2 again on the N9 was a joy.

My Nexus 5 has been such a great phone that I recently dropped it and cracked the screen, rather than replace it as it's still a very fast and very capable device, I treated it to a full rebuild - It's good as new now for another couple of years. I plan on keeping this one for at least five years, I see no reason whatsoever to replace it.

What one has between Android & iPhone are two different approaches to the same idea. One approach treats the end user as an adult allowing one to take as much risk as they care to take and the second approach treats the end user as an unknowledgeable child.
Take your pick.

This pretty much sums it up.
Non-techies at work (sales, management) usually have Apple.
Techies, developers, support, IT usually have Android.

General office staff is split. Higher paid tend to lean Apple, lower paid tend to lean Android.

I've never had any malware on any of my family's Android devices. Maybe it's because we don't install apps from questionable sites. I do scan them occasionally just to make sure.

As for updates, that's the biggest complaint I have about Android.
But, with most Android devices there is a work around: Root the device and install an after market rom. Did it with my Acer Tablet that was abandoned at 4.x. Not possible with Apple.

With Apple, people complain about new features not being available on older phones, or poor performance after an upgrade, so I don't think the fact that Apple is more likely to provide version updates is much better.

As for iTunes, that's not a plus.
It might be ok on Apple computers, but on Windows it boarders on malware.
If someone at the office is having odd problems on their computer, and the virus scan doesn't show anything, one of the 1st things I do is uninstall iTunes. Quite often it fixes the problem.

I love my Android phones I've had since the original Droid, but a WebOS fan asked me how Android was better even today than WebOS. It is a good question. He said he could run for example 4 independent poker games on 4 cards, and be listening to music, and just switch to what game was ready for his move. iPhone, and mutliple apps at the same time, not likely, but Android I think is going the direction of less Multi-tasking (apps running in the background) to conserve battery.

Anyway interesting thought about the future of Android.

Basically, you have to decide if you are smart enough to actually handle a smartphone. Apple assumes that it's users are walking retards, and builds it's walled garden to accommodate that, and protect it's users from themselves. Android phones aren't quite as restrictive.

An Android phone is like a car that doesn't prevent you from driving off of a cliff. Despite the potential danger, some of us are somehow able to manage...

Why I use android over Apple.. The hardware is better and I have complete control over my phone.

Why fears of malware apps in the store don't scare me? I don't download stupid shit.

I have no problems with iPhone, my wife has one. They are great for people with basic needs. However the fears of android malware are overblown nonsense. You aren't going to get anything if you aren't an idiot.

These stories never make any sense, for instance the article says that the guy at google saw the iPhone launch and was oh like I got to redesign this phone. But the LG Prada already existed at the time and was being sold in the market for half a year before apple even announced the similar looking iphone. So are they saying this guy had no idea about the LG Prada even though it was basically his job to make this product go?

Maybe people are "gushing" about the iPhone, simply because it changed the world. It changed it enough, so that Android could exist.

The iPhone did change the world but not for reasons people like to claim. There is only 1 reason why the iPhone changed the world, it is because it was the first time a major US carrier allowed and pushed a phone where the OS maker controlled the software and media delivery to the phone. Read that sentence multiple times every word is important. Prior to this carriers tried to make money off of apps, ring tones and music themselves and never wanted to let anyone else in on their money making. The down side was that what they allowed to be developed for their phones was very limited. Split between many carriers and so on. Along comes apple and tries to do this and every carrier even sprint lol, turns them down. But ATT bites. The carriers would still resist this change for years, then one day Verizon would finally give up and they would admit that carriers just aren't doing enough to do this on their own. This is when Verizon decides to do the Droid. and when they do the droid, go back to that sentence they pushed it. Nothing the iPhone or android did was unique or even new, but the CRITICAL factor is the carrier pushing the device. Android does diddly shit for several years till Verizon pushed the droid and then BAM android sales sky rocket and this becomes the death of symbian Even to this day if you want some other phone to become a big deal forget it unless you get a major carrier behind your device. Ask MS whom has fought this for years and lost constantly.

Curious as to what you doing on these phones that you can't do on an iPhone? Downloading pirated content is about the only one I can think of?

You are always limited by options and hardware with a closed hardware and software company that refuses to allow others to work with their software. The galaxy note is perfect check mate argument. You cant buy an iPhone like that, and maybe the iPhone 8 will be like that but by then you will have literally missed 7 years of using an active digitizer stylus built into a smartphone. IR remotes, Retina scanners, finger print readers, highly niche devices. There is a ton of stuff you either cant do on an iPhone or could not do for some time before apple finally adopted it. You can't even have an OLED display. Anyone can write any software for any device but hardware is where true limits exist.

THIS!!! How many times have we heard of apps slipping into the supposed "safe" Google Play Store? More times than I can count! It's like Google doesn't care if bad shit gets into their store because in order to do something about it it would result in closing down their oh so precious open platform. Oh, we can't do that! That would be wrong!

Face it people, open platforms are great and all... until they're not. People are generally too fucking stupid to have the responsibility to keep their computing devices safe. They need all the hand holding they can get and then some.

As long as google constantly checks for this things have been fine. No one in my family has had any detectable malware on an android phone ever. That is a lot of phones and a lot of years. You have to go find a pretty niche or new application in the play store, but sure things sometimes slip by for a little while but it will get caught if it starts gaining any traction. Likewise what makes you so sure everthing in the appstore is safe? Are you going to make the ridiculous claim that apples screening process really catches everything? Remember NO barrier of money or time is going to stop a malicious product from getting through. A malicious intended program writer has plenty of incentive to come up with whatever fees are requested from apple. I am sure that google scans play store apps for malware, its not like that is freaking hard to do with automation.

Puh-leeeeeze, stop the iPhone fan boi tired arguments. In its current state, neither iPhone nor Android are any more less secure than the other. Cell phones simply are not as prone to malware / viruses as compared to pc's. Unless your rooted or jail broke and downloading programs from the dark web, the average user will most likely never see a malware infection in their phone.

I have several of both devices, and this kiddo prefers the usability and stability of iOS thank you :)

As do I. iOS may not have the latest and greatest whiz-bang features but the system is stable, rock solid stable. And when it comes down to it, that's all that really should matter at the end of the day. I don't have time to be tweaking my phone, I need it to work when I need it to work. As for tweaking and stuff, that's why I have a Windows system and not a Mac. Apple can keep their shitty Mac systems.
