With yesterday's announcement of the Super NES classic to no ones suprise, also comes a startling revelation, Star Fox 2 was announced as one of the 21 games included. Polygon writes about the craziness of its inclusion as the video game has not been official released before. After the launch of the first game, Argonaut Software began work only finishing an alpha version. Nintendo emulator fans must be very familiar with the title as the ROM of the game has been floating around since the heydays of SNES emulation on various ROM sites. Your move Sega, maybe a release of Sonic X-treme or Sega VR.

Check out the "legit footage" from Winter CES 1995.

"The decision was made because they didn't want the old-gen 3D going up against the much better 3D of the next generation, side-by-side," a former member of the Star Fox 2 team told Nintendo Life in 2015 in an extensive feature on the game's development and eventual mothballing.

They shoulda released it on VCON like a decade ago. Actually they shoulda released it on the original hardware, since the damn thing was pretty much done before they scrapped it. Myself and most people I know played it via emulation ages ago. You can also play it on the SNES/SF hardware using something like an Everdrive. Why they decide to finally officially release it now? They worried about moving SNES Classic units? They should be more concerned about production, since apparently it was sooo difficult to make those Linux PCs they called the NES Classic Edition. Fuckin' $60 device became a $200+ novelty. I think I'll pass on this one too. I have an SNES (now with dead CPU) and Super Famicom that still get active use, and emulation via PC, so yeah I think I'm good.

I managed to score both NES Classic and Mini Famicom for $260 total, but I was a very late comer.

If the SNES/SFC Classic are anywhere near better prices, I will buy them again, if only for collection purposes. I probably won't even use the 8Bit classics that much, I doubt I will use the 16bit ones either.

I'd kill for Sega version though, especially considering that Nintendo stuck to their guns (limited game library) that Sega can capitalise on.

Not news; the ROM image was patched/translated in what, 2002? Is Nintendo really that desperate for sales?

I don't think so, I think they may already have something else planned down the line and these classics are there to test the water, and the limited run would seem like they don't want the classic to eat into whatever they have planned.

If sales are all what they wanted, they wouldn't have stopped making classic NES in all likelihood.

(no citations, just a hunch)

The problem is the Classics are relatively expensive to produce hardware relative to the amount of money they bring in. The profits on those units are going to be abysmal. In addition, Nintendo has to secure rights to release all non-Nintendo IP, which limits both profits and the amount of software on the platform.

Basically: How is the classics in any way superior to emulation? It's not cost-effective to produce dedicated hardware for what can be emulated for free in software.

Desperate? You really think they are desperate? How about it's cool that they are putting a game that the vast majority of people have never seen or heard of?

Isn't it basically a raspberry pi with a custom image for emulation? Can't be that expensive. Nintendo aren't often in the habit of losing money on hardware.

This will be unobtainable for most of us. Unless we are willing to toss out 100's of dollars. Nintendo will make a couple thousand, scalpers will be the only ones buying and selling these.

That footage looks just like the game Vortex that came out on the SNES. I believe Vortex was made by the same studio.

Okay I originally watched the video on my phone, and I just now watched it on my compie. Yeah, the fidelity looks appropriate for the time, it looked better on my phone than it did on my compie. Stupid phone!

lol.

I'm guessing you've never seen Jurassic Park from 1993 on Blu-Ray. The fidelity is real.

Behold, the power of 1995 video camera technology (if you could afford it). Also, I want that Sony CRT.. very badly.

SNES is the only system I collect and that will have quite a few of the pricey ones I'd like that are missing from my collection (obviously not a replacement for the real thing but an official offering is nice). Still, at $80 for 20 games it seems a bit pricey. Not to mention will it even do 3 players in Secret of Mana? I certainly won't be touching it if the scarcity thing happens again. It also bothers me they could have somewhat easily added expand-ability or at least got to ~50 games with more first party titles. Honestly, what I really want is a retro Nintendo console that frequently gets titles from all 90s systems including new translations of great games we missed out on. Not going to happen, but everything else seems like a weak half step.

I played a Star Fox SNES Video Game competition while on vacation at Disney World in Orlando around DEC 1993 or so and came in 3rd place. My next door neightbor had an snes and the game and we used to play the shit out of it. I gotta pretty good at it for not having owned the system. Some of the kids in the competition hadn't played it before but out of 1000 ppl i was really proud of myself at the time. It was my first foray into competitive gaming. Playing it on a huge screen in front of a crowd was intoxication.

I can't wait for the rom to hit the net, will be fun to check it out, albeit briefly.

Which isn't going to happen because Nintendo doesn't control the majority of the IP.

So you mean you want the Wii / Wii U virtual console with a few additional games.
