Newegg is having a promo that brings their Seagate 8TB HDD to $200 which is the cheapest I've seen.

Its not one of their slower archive drives too which is a plus. Gotta say I could get used to $25 a TB.
 
I got a newer model of this drive out of a 8TB External a couple weeks ago for $150 from Fry's.
 
There is a limit of 3, for those thinking about building a home uberNAS.

I did the same thing with Hitachi 6TB drives. Cheaper to shuck them, but you lose the warranty.

Haha, yeah, given we were paying $30/TB in 2011 (e.g. https://hardforum.com/threads/micro...-lp-2tb-5900rpm-st320005n4a1as-rk-60.1630137/) before the Thai floods and industry consolidation led to a what amounts to a duopoly... meaning it has only taken 6 years for the price to drop ~16%.

Honestly, I built my ZFS server with $60 2TB drives in 2011 on the premise I'd be paying $60-$75 for one or two steps below max capacity HDDs (today I'd say that is 8TB drives, with 10TB and 12TB marking the higher end). Boy, was I wrong.

You shouldn't build a NAS from these drives anyway. They're terribly slow and unreliable. The "archive" name in this case is really accurate they're only good for that and do make at least two copies.

These 8TB drives linked use PMR which is different than the SMR seen in their other marketed archive drives.

They probably wouldn't make great drives for a misson critical NAS, but for a hobbyist family oriented one, I'm not sure why they wouldn't work fine.

The archive SMR are slow at sustained loads, but the two I have will play stored blu-rays without issues so I guess it really depends how heavy as a user you plan to hit them.

I see, then I mistook it I assumed these were the archive branded ones. I didn't realize the desktop version could be $200.

As for the archive ones their sustained speed is about 20Mb/s.
