Is anybody still planning on running 4 GPU's on any of these boards? I thought multi GPU support beyond 2-way was on the downfall?

it is but that's not the only thing you can use them for. You have pcie raid cards, pcie ssd's, workstation setups, etc because rigs like these aren't going to be used specifically for gaming in mind.

If you want to run a whole bunch of displays its easier to find 4 decent PCIe x16 video cards than scrounge for x1 parts

And you can always plug x1/x4/x8 cards into x16 slots.

It would have to be just for 2 reason... mining or just plain and simple future expand ability...

yeah, like Parja said, smaller cards can fit in larger slots.

PCIe has basically whittled down to 16x and 1x slot sizes. So that you're not limited to "just one slot" available for your x2 or x4 or x8 cards.

When you think about it, anything else is a waste of space, and is sure to cause you massive compatibility issues. So having as many x16 slots as possible ups the versatility of those "larger than x1" expansion slots!

Not the only reasons. GPU accelerated VFX work can use as many cards as there are in the system. By extension, just about any GPU accelerated workstation task can do it.
