Samsung has announced that their artsy “Frame TV” will be available for purchase starting next week. The 4K set made a big impression at CES 2017 for mimicking a hanging portrait: owners may change the colors and materials with interchangeable bezels, and it even comes with an “Art Mode” that transforms the screen to display framed paintings and photographs.

Designed in collaboration with renowned designer Yves Behar, The Frame is designed not only to provide a premium entertainment experience, but also to enhance the look of any home, just like a piece of artwork that you would hang on your wall. The Frame, a CES 2017 "Best of Innovations Award" recipient, is a powerful combination of technology and design that was created with the modern user in mind. When powered on, The Frame offers 4K Ultra HD picture quality. When not displaying TV or movies, The Frame becomes a customizable work of art that can elegantly exhibit artwork and photographs via "Art Mode."

Samsung is doing whatever they can to remain relevant until they get the kinks worked out for their true QLED displays.
 
What's the cost vs. buying a super thin screen and making your own frame?

What kinks? QLED sets have amazing performance. Or havent you bothered to go look at one in person?
 
No thanks, I'll stick to my superior OLED's that I paid $1600 (55") and $2200 (65") for respectively.
 
I love how Samsung's main picture is trying to be all artsy and crisp looking but they decided leave the cables on the outside of the wall. They didn't even put them all into a single cord concealer - you can clearly see two separate cables - and because that wouldn't look stupid enough on it's own they decided to do this on a wall with a chair rail, and used a console short enough to fail to hide it.

That said, I'd like an 'art mode' for my properly mounted KS8000.

Edit: And another thing - what the fuck was 'Renowned Designer Yves Behar's contribution to this 'collaboration'? I mean, I'm sure he's a great designer, but do you really need to bring in the guy who designed the Ouya (as well as a waterproof vibrator) to put a picture frame on a TV? Literally everyone has had that idea.

Marketing makes me rage. The cords are visible because stupid consumers apparently won't believe it's a TV without the cords. They note that Yves Behar is a renowned designer because no one knows who he is or anything about his work or relevance to this TV. This is resume-padding on both sides - Samsung uses his name because it sounds exotic to Americans, and they'll also try to get some traction from his sustainability / social goodness branding. This is a TV that rich white people can feel good about buying. Fuck marketing.

In order to conserve energy, the motion sensor recognizes when someone enters or exits the room and can put The Frame into a power-saving mode when no one is present. It can then automatically switch The Frame back on when someone re-enters the space."

TLDR there's a camera.

I have long thought about putting a frame around a 4K monitor and hanging it on the wall.

I have no issues with this.

No, there is a sensor which measures the brightness of the signal...that doesnt mean there is a camera.

Personally, the leaving and entering room thing is what I wanted for my XBox One and Kinect. It would have been cool for the show to automatically pause when I leave the room and start again when I enter.
 
Just make the better displays cheaper without a ridiculously thick bezel. And not be just cutting a tv in half for some ridiculously wide display.

Samsung QLED tvs, as many backlights as you can fit in, 4k, 120Hz, low input lag, as close to rec 2020 as you can get, hdmi 2.1 / displayport 1.4, 43" size. Not hard, just make that as a base and all high end pc gamers will buy that that do not hate themselves.
 
Wonderful idea, ridiculous price and nickel&diming after purchase. You're definitely paying for an "idea" here, not $2G+ worth of hardware.

I have a Sony Bravia, and it does not have a camera, and even says you need to connect a Skype compatible USB camera to it to use Skype etc...

The interesting thing is, that when you setup the motion sensor, the TV puts a menu up on the screen, and you can see yourself on it. So it DOES have a camera built in, and is using it as a proximity/movement detector...
 
I saw this TV at Fry's and I actually looked at it and walked right past it, it wasnt till I got a few feet past it and thought it was weird they put a picture frame in the TV section and remembered this article.

It looks INCREDIBLE. The ambient sensor is the key part. It had EXACTLY the right brightness to look natural. There was even a "matte" border around the picture that looked freaking real.

I was very impressed. I could see these being used in an art museum and onlookers having zero inclination they are looking at a screen, especially from several feet away.

My only concern about something like this would be how long will it last being on 24x7 like that?
