Doom & Gloom, huge hashrate drop incoming for RX 4xx/5xx cards

from comments:
Hi, this is the future hashrate or my rx 470 4gb.

Dag 130 – 27.400 Mh/s
Dag 140 – 25.100 Mh/s
Dag 150 – 22.500 Mh/s
Dag 160 – 20.100 Mh/s
Dag 199 – 10.000 Mh/s

From a reddit post:
This is mine: Aorus 580 8GB, ubermix mod, 2195 vram, 1165 core.

DAG 130: 30.2 MH/s
DAG 140: 27.6 MH/s
DAG 150: 23.6 MH/s

edit tested a 1070 (all stock):
30.7 average at every single epoch from 130 to 190.

I get 22MH/s on all epoch with a 1060 6GB.

Why this is happening / history of other cards:

This particular slowdown is not directly related to memory speed, it's the result of translation lookaside buffer thrashing, and it's impact varies greatly from architecture to architecture and how the buffer was implemented. GPUs simply were not designed to make random accesses to a multi-GB contiguous chunk of data in VRAM.
Pitcairn (256bit) and Tahiti (384 bit) suffered greatly from this and have continually lost performance as the DAG grew, whereas Hawaii (512bit) and Tonga (256bit) were not significantly impacted and still get much the same hashrate they did last year.
In the fall of 2015 a tweaked 280x would get +27mh, today it would be lucky to see 15mh. the 750Ti was hit super hard by this issue last year, with a steep plummet in hashrate down like 80%

the 1060s are turning out to be highly undervalued IMHO as everyone scrambles around looking for AMD cards. HUSH..interesting, hadnt stumbled upon that one.

Alright so I tested this:

Dag 140 - No change
Dag 150 - No change
Dag 160 - No change
Dag 170 - No change
Dag 175 - No change
Dag 180 - NOPE! 3gb cards :)

For once I am glad that I bought shit cards lol, these 1060 3gb hash 15mh/s out of the box and 18.5mh/s when oced.

So by my calculation, my cards will be useless for mining ETH by early 2018, that is if new Dag is every 4 days, longer if it's every 5 days. It's ok, I can take a break and sell these cards around Christmas when everyone is looking for cheap cards to upgrade their kids' computer.
But a lot can change by that time, they are low power, maybe some other coin will boom.

Just wait until somebody figures out how to get ddr5x working better on eth and it's bye bye to amd cards.

Theres always other ETHash based shitcoins with smaller DAG sizes.

I'm making a coin from scratch, but it will be a year before it's ready.

Is there any rules on HardOCP regarding posting information about your own coin?

Tell us more about this coin.

From scratch, as in you're not forking an Established code?

Writing everything, including the foundations, from scratch. It's written in C++. Testing will be done on Debian and I already added Windows support.

It's still in the early stages, but the main goal here is to create a distributed Torrent tracker that is immune to censorship.

50% of the coins will be mined by securing the blockchain, 50% will be awarded through providing torrent search results and seeding.

Ethereum Classic is just as, if not more profitable than Ethereum right now. I assume this won't be an issue for ETC since the difficulty is so much lower? Or is the DAG size unrelated to the difficulty?

I would run it by Kyle first as the rules only really say no spamming and no referrals. Not sure how he would look at it. Better safe than an unintentional banning.

DAG is related to nunber of blocks mined. ETC should have about the same amount of blocks mined.

Theres many other coins though.

ETH is currently at block ~3,903,590 and ETC is at 3,947,030. Thus, unless I'm mistaken DAG should be similar in size. The reason for this is that difficulty is adjusted for the amount of hashing power so the rate of new blocks should be similar even though fewer people are mining ETC.

Shucks. I'll have to see about switching to something else once this becomes a problem with 8GB RX 580s.
