It is now painfully obvious what Grand Theft Auto fans think of Take-Two’s decision to shut down popular modding tool OpenIV: GTA V’s Steam page is now littered with thumbs-down icons, with only 21% of the 23,000 reviews in the past 30 days being listed as positive. Those of you who wish you save OpenIV may sign an ongoing petition at change.org—it's already received over 35,000 signatures. Something tells me that Rockstar couldn’t care less, though.

Visiting Steam's store page for Grand Theft Auto 5, the fallout is immediately evident. Rockstar's widely-acclaimed action sandbox has enjoyed cool-blue “Mostly Positive” Steam reviews since its release, but “recent” review scores now rate the game with the angry-red “Mostly Negative.” Currently, only 21% of the 23,000 reviews in the past 30 days are listed as positive, and scrolling down the 'most helpful' list of reviews, there are more thumbs-downs than a theater packed with Roger Ebert clones sitting through a Rob Schneider film festival.

Stop buying Take-Two games if you truly care about this decision. While people make bad reviews, 74 thousand people are playing GTA V right now on Steam. Take-Two continues to make a killing off GTAO and I would bet that the next XCOM 2 expansion, RDR2, and Civ will all make good money without a blimp in financials.

If you TRULY care, buying the products they offer is the clearest indication that your lying.

I have a feeling down the line CDPR might go this route as well if they ever get in the realm of MP owRPG. The lack of real modding tools or being updated now is a sign also. I do have too agree though. Is the take down real if the letter is really badly spelled? Or is this like those fake death celeb things on facebook? Is take 2 going to make an announcement?

I'm getting a hearty good laugh out of this situation. I did not bother to mod anything with GTA V because to be honest, that was one beautiful game on PC. Really never felt the need to mod anything & with the whole online being a big deal, did not want to take that risk. I did however mod the living hell out of GTA IV since it was based in NYC. Even with how horrific it was to mod anything in that game, changed a lot of things so it reflected a more realistic NYC look & feel. Even though I stopped with the modding, I followed the communities based around it. While some people do feel wronged by the situation, a huge portion of people sounding off are just jumping on the " Bash Take-Two " bandwagon. Can look through some reviews & see that some people hardly have any play time in the game lol. Just kids being kids.

Yeah, show us that you care, by not buying a game from a completely different franchise, they'll sure to get the hint from that.

Oh and BTW thanks for the heads up about a new xcom2 expansion, I wouldn't even have known about that if not for you :p

The letter is real according to Rockstar.

Take-Two owns Xcom, Civ and their studios completely. Boycotting them is entirely within reason.

I know, and I don't care. I won't take out my beef with rockstar on Xcom, because it was the best game released last year. So if this dlc turns out to be good (unlike alien hunters) I'm buying it anyway

"Unfortunately OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody. "
This is why we can't have nice things.

So that must mean they have fixed all the cheating.

So everyone is in the loop, NerdCubed did a quick recap of the situation:

- Take Two CEO comes out and says they're undermonetizing their player base last week.

- This week, a cease & desist order was sent to the OpenIV mod framework team. It powers the majority of single player mods - they don't do anything with multiplayer as part of their stated mission. This was done conveniently during E3 news coverage days (e.g. not slow news days).

- When called on it, Rockstar essentially pulled the "it wasn't us" and claimed Take Two's decision was because it enabled hacking in a game that has been plagued by hackers for as long as it's been online.

You can probably guess the real reasoning behind the Take Two C&D. It's harder to sell premium content that is cheaply made (like skins and clothing) if said content is freely available by the modding community. It's the same reason most games have gone anti-mod.

There's two trains of thoughts:

- Prior to this week Rockstar & companies like Paradox (Cities Skylines) have seen the value of strong mod communities to drive the game sales for years after release.

- Others (EA/Ubi/etc) feel this content pulls sales away from the DLC / season-pass content. They essentially want to be the ones to create the mods so they can sell them.

Except that was a lie. OpenIV does none of those things. The cheaters don't use OpenIV to spawn money and speedhack. Take Two is just trying to divert the backlash by lying.

Take-Two and Rockstar COULD care less as they have a fairly significant audience captured as not only did the players plunk down a decent pile of money for a beautiful game, many continued to become more deeply entrenched by purchasing shark cards to grow their virtual turf and holdings online and don't want to lose that investment.

That's money that was spent as fast as the (micro)transaction for the virtual currency occurred. But, face it. Is there ANY real communication able to be had with Rockstar, its support and the player base they are attacking? So far, everything I've seen equates to automated or cut-n-paste responses devoid of understanding or compassion for the customer and providing any real or clear answers.

Rockstar and GTA V, as a whole, make as pretty a w***e as any other to grace the franchise while hanging out with the seediest sorts of characters and "management". She's only an order of magnitude more expensive, ten times more addictive and the most catty of doms ever to parade herself about- not needing a reason what so ever to beat you down and either cage or banish you.:bear:

As such, this game is very much a "buyer beware" property surrounded with the screams of the dying and bodies of the dead. It's tainting the neighboring properties as well and with good reason. If Take-Two/Rockstar Rickrolled so many people once, what's not to say they won't rinse and repeat the process on their next project?

"We're all about the players and the community... until we've got their money and blame them for stealing from us. PSYYYCH!!!"

Right there is over 56,000 people play it on Steam. So who the hell cares about the ratings. I don't buy games to mod them. I play GTA 5 and like it. Will buy there next one.

Well, I guess we can kiss a PC version of Red Dead 2 goodbye. The constant fight against hackers and cheaters is probably more work than they think it's worth.

Good. If they are going to be hostile to modding, they can stay the fuck away from the PC and just put out trash for consoles. Plenty of companies that respect PC gamers.

Why is Rockstar being such assholes about this? Every time they patch the game it breaks the mod even though it has nothing to do with online and the patches aren't for offline.

I bought GTA V so my son could explore a really fantastic open world game. But the Family Friendly mod was the only reason I bought the game. Otherwise I wouldn't allow that in my house.

They do not want people playing offline. They want people doing micro transactions online.

Another game that said fuck you to single player.

For GTAV and Red Dead being trash they seem to still have a massive player base for GTAV going and people sure did seem excited for Red Dead 2.

Take-two knows this is perfectly legal. They are simply using their deep pockets to bully the little guy like so many other big companies do. Justice is sold to the highest bidder.

They should make hacking and cheating through hacks in games a crime just like hacking a bank or the government.

I know it's off topic but I must get this off my chest:
Instead of shielding children from reality, isn't it better to make them understand it?
Changing the game so that nobody can get hurt I think sends the message : Go wild, there are no consequences whatsoever to your actions!

Thank you for your contribution to a better gaming industry for everyone. Be sure to buy a pack of lube to make the next crap some company pulls easier to take in. Oh, and I'm looking forward to your crying when the next shitty move finally affects you.

- a non GTA player

Take Two has been hostile toward alot of stuff in the last few years when it comes thier games.
Rmember the FiveM multilayer mod? (Which is coming back but for how long)
Sending P.I's to the modern house "NT Authority"
....when there damn mod checks your SC account to make sure you own the game.

How about the Red Dead Redemption map mod for GTA V?

I wish take two would look at how well Skyrim has held up with its modding community and realize they have made a damn killing off this game. I bought it twice, for 360 and PC.

There's also been ton of complaints bout people's accounts getting reset after the last update. People who were either given money by accident from hackers in the game (which is why I avoid public lobbies) and people who grinded alot in anticipation of the last update....either lost a TON of money or had thier accounts reset.

This also really sucks because I'm going back though single player and wanting to complete every nook of the campaign, and had planned to use mods after this 2nd play through.

I played the GTA IV with the iron man mod, cut scenes were awesome with that mod LOL.

That's a really short sighted and ignorant statement to make. GTA V has been out for so long this kind of retroactive change is well beyond a reasonable refund period. It's akin to going back to Skyrim and removing modding.

People already fucking own the game and have for years now, you expect that to magically undo somehow? Oh and all that time these people were having fun.

Get real.

It has received mostly negative reviews on Steam for a long time due to people being unfairly banned from MP.

Dude I have almost 500 games and they all work. I don't use mods.

Nice. Oh well. You really think that you are the only person in the world who actually counts on this matter? Good for you if you don't use mods, but acknowledge that plenty of people are triggered by this.

Oh wait! Those people are not you, so they don't matter. My bad.

Not your bad. But with that thinking that's how Trump got in office. Just think how may of the millions of players that don't use mods. And there are.

I was already on the fence about GTA V due to DRM concerns but this seals it for me. Off the wishlist it goes. I don't want to be their minnow or whale.

When I buy games I don't sit and find out what groups are protesting said game or what things people have issues with before possibly contributing to the monster of a company that is hurting them all. I buy a game if it fits what I want.

As a consumer you can't possibly take in every possible issue with a game, that is crazy talk. I know this issue affects you and you are emotional about this but also realize those of us that don't really care or are not affected by this in a negative way at all, don't really have the time to be bothered by it.

Its like deleting a character I don't play, I can't get upset about it because I don't play that character, but those that do and are 'harmed' by it please voice your opinions, but don't expect others to grab picket signs and stand with you just because you are.

Honestly, GTAO started as a good idea and was fun but just turned into obnoxious griefing and I lost interest.

It's not about what aspect of the game you care about, it's about the way the company treats its customers and as long as there are people like you that only care about their narrow interest for a specific product, the companies will continue with all the shitty practices they've been using the past years. Fake trailers, overpromising and underdelivering, bugs, balance and gameplay quality breaking microtransactions, bugs, overpriced and day one DLCs, season passes, obtrusive DRM, short support, mod blocking, bugs...

It's not about that. These mods are unsupported so anyone who bought the game with the premise of playing with unsupported mods are causing their own problems. How about you try acting like an adult and reading the game's terms of service before blindly buy the game?

Please, Rockstar's justification for banning OpenIV is trash. Its not used to cheat GTAO. Rockstar themselves have endorsed their modding community. The issue here isn't expecting Rockstar to support mods, its them being a lying bastard, harming their game's community, for some lucrative financial gain thats got people annoyed.

My point is I would never attempt to assume what you think about a company or product so how could I factor that into my decisions. I only have my experience and views to base on. If I don't buy DLC but the company releases overpriced DLC, but the game is still worth it to me then I still buy it.

The view isn't narrow, it is honest. All I would ever ask is everyone to not assume what others think or feel. If I don't like how I am being treated I won't buy from them.

This change does not affect me or my friends and family I play with, how far outside my circle of influence should I care about when buying a video game?

The other side of this are the crusaders that just fight on forums about something but do not write directly to the company or any other movement that actually could make a difference. I have waited and / or avoided games due to issues I did not agree with, this just doesn't happen to be one of those issues that would stop me.
