SENTRY: Console-sized gaming PC case project

The pci-e slot provides enough power for the graphics card. I've used some combination of three cards in two different mini-itx motherboards and have not had any problems. Well, at least not with Windows 7 or 8. Ubuntu Linux works, but at this time does not provide hardware decoding for 4K hevc or VP9 ...

My point was that the thin mini ITX have single pci-e x4 slot which by pci-e spec should be providing 25W max power through the slot if I remember correctly, and GTX 1050 and most of such cards are rated for 75W. Only the full length x16 slot is rated for 75W. I think people are going around this by using a riser with a molex or sata connector providing this additional power.

I don't know however if you'd be able to power it from the thin mini-ITX itself and that might depend on the board.

That's of course IF you wanted to use thin mini-ITX to NOT play with internal power cables and don't pay for something like HD-PLEX or pico-psu. If you were to use a normal itx board then you'll end up paying for the internal power adapter for external brick. And that's what comparable to getting a normal SFX psu. Unless of course you have all that already.

I received my Sentry in the mail on Tuesday!! It is amazing! I'm in New Hampshire in the US. I don't have all of the parts for the build though. The only things I'm need now are the ASRock Mini ITX Ryzen Motherboard, an NVME SSD, and a GPU. I'm going to be gaming in 4K playing Desstiny 2, ultra modded Bethesda games, and Assassin's Creed Origins. Will a GTX 1080 be enough for that, our should I get a 1080 Ti? I am aware that the 1080 Ti is not recommended based on TDP for the Sentry, but am curious on the opinion of others.

Gigabyte's gaming OC should fit https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N108TGAMING-OC-11G#kf
EVGA SC gaming should fit https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=11G-P4-6593-KR

I haven't seen any other 1080TI that is not heavily oversized and would fit. That said, I do not recommend going for open air 1080TI because there's high risk of the cooler recycling hot air inside Sentry as well as blowing loads of it inside motherboard area.

Apart from that blower 1080TI cards will fit - founders edition and non-reference custom blowers from each vendor should fit as well, unless there's a really long blower card that I don't know about. Once again, 250W card is not really recommended.

I don't recall if it has been confirmed to fit in the Sentry, but the EVGA FTW3 1080ti seemed to have nearly the best thermals.

The fact that the card has huge cooler and in open air tests or in full tower chassis with lots of fans performs better has no meaning in cases where the card is on its own in cramped space.

Finally finished the assembly. Looks pretty cool.

1080 Ti with a Pentium? Interesting combination. I assume you decided to allocate most of the budget to the gpu? You plan to upgrade the cpu later? You should definitely consider a real quad core otherwise you won't be getting the full performance of your 1080 Ti. Very nice build. Looks good next to the white ps4, not much bigger either, but 10x more powerful haha.

Jesus! A pentium and a 1080ti!? And I thought my plan was unbalanced!

So, I don't have my 1070 yet, but my i3-7350k is working just great with my friend's 970. I would love to see some tests with your rig to see if the pentium can keep up at all.

I'm really curious though, what was your reasoning for pairing two parts on such extreme opposite ends of the spectrum?

I have a couple of pico-psu units lying around, as well as an ASRock BTC Pro kit, which powers GTX 1050 (and comparable ATI) cards. I also have an ASRock AM1H-ITX motherboard, which has a built-in DC-in jack. With this configuration I can drive a GTX 1050 using a standard-grade pci-e x16 extension card. I realize most people would not go this route, but for a non-gaming, high-res media player and streamer this is more than adequate ...

Right now I'm mining DaggerHashimoto at 60% Power Limit with 50% fan speed and temperature is~70C. With default PL and fan speed it is 84C and throttling. So manual fan settings are required for good temperature. Though It will be louder (as Founders Edition are pretty quite on default settings), I think it is not very important in games as you can always play in headphones :)

Well, I'm waiting for Coffee Lake.
For now I simply installed the most powerful GPU that i had. I also have some 1070s and 1080 in other mining rigs. I guess nobody here uses sentry as a mini mining rig. But I do. And it works good enough.

That clarifies what you want to use. Note the fact that asrock BTC Pro won't fit in Sentry's riser slot, but if you use that motherboard you can simply use the riser that is included.

It's going to be a long wait.

Anyone has there sentry that is currently using a 7700k? I'm like last transport so I was waiting till I actually got it to decide processor mobo and ram but I got a brand new 7700k for free so I want to use that and save some expense now and buy a better graphics card instead. I just want to know what your temps were like I will not be over clocking whatsoever 4.2ghz out the box is good enough will the noctua l9i be enough even if rated for only 65 watts?

All you have to do is go back a few pages or search the thread:
Got my build finished now. It looks so clean on the desk. Near dead silent in idle, and it doesn't make too much noise under load. Specs are:
Intel Core i7-7700K (Delidded)
Noctua NH-L9i
ASUS ROG Strix Z270i Gaming
NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition
Corsair SF600
Corsair LPX 3000MHz DDR4 16GB
Samsung 850 EVO M.2 Sata 500GB SSD

No notable issues with cable-management. The Corsair ribbon-cables aren't optimal no, but i didn't have any issues with it.

First of all a big thanks to the whole DR ZĄBER team! You guys have been perfectly transparent about all the processes involved in creating this great product.

My white Sentry just arrived in Germany 5 workdays after I received my tracking number. Package condition is very good: No damage whatsoever and impressively well packaged. Transport companies were DPD Poland and GLS within Germany.

I'm deeply impressed by the build quality of the case - no sharp edges, no defects. Sentry is really beautiful and sturdy.

I had already ordered components so I promptly filled the case with life. My build consists of:
  • ASRock Z270M-ITX/ac motherboard
  • Zotac GTX 1080 FE
  • Intel Core i7 7700K, Cooled by LP53 + Noctua NF-A9x14

Just wanted to share my positive experience with the case and thank you for it. You may receive lots of inquiries and even get the impression people are unsatisfied which I don't think is true. You are doing a great job considering communication, product development, production and delivery. This project should be a role model for all future crowdfunding campaigns!

Update 1
Temperatures are high although from all what I read about the 7700k that is to be expected. With no delidding and stock speeds it idles between 30-40 C when stressed at 100% quickly rises and ends up jumping between 70-80 C. Maximum I saw were 84 C. No thermal throttling (full turbo).
GPU exhaust air gets pretty toasty too resulting in a quite hot upper part of the case. Chip temps I saw after gaming session were about 80-85 C.
I'm gonna put an update with more detailed stress test results next week.

Just got my second batch black Sentry only tree days after I got the email notification.
First of all I want to thank the dr. Zaber team for their great work! I was able to fit in all the parts even with the original corsair cables. It's a tight fit.

Part list:
CPU: i7 7700k
Mobo: Asus strix Z270i
GPU: EVGA GTX1800
SSD1: Samsung 960 evo m.2
SSD2: Samsung 850 evo
Memory: HyperX fury 16gb

Hey guys, a while back the question of portable monitors came up and I wanted to throw in my 2 cents on the topic.
Recently I got the GeChic 1503i and I think if you have a Sentry, then it's the perfect travel monitor.
TLDR: 9.5/10, excellent travel monitor

Display: IPS 1080p. I've been gaming on it lately and it's a great 1080 panel at 60Hz. Color is very sharp and vivid.
Touch: they make a 1503H that's not touch screen and a little cheaper. I'd say go with that one if you don't need the touchscreen. The 15" screen is a little too big to have it be a lap device like a tethered tablet, so it's still mostly mouse and keyboard interface. Touch is very responsive and works well though.
Audio: it has little speakers. Didn't even know that when I bought it. They work if you don't have or want headphones and have a physical volume control on the side.
Input: USB C power, mini hdmi (or mini vga) video input, headphone jack. Has an expansion slot to plug stuff in the back, but that's extra and not necessary.
Build quality: This is where this screen shines. It's like a high quality laptop screen with a stand. The magnetic adjustable stand is one of the best I've ever used and it feels very stable. I'm on a ship right now for work (hence needing a travel monitor) and even when rolling I haven't worried about it tipping. I threw this in my backpack and never worried. It's a hard plastic and not metal like say an iPad so it doesn't feel quite that rigid, but it comes with a hard shell screen cover and feel stiff enough that there's no flex. The panel is very thin and really easy to travel with.
DM if you have any specific questions, but after looking for a travel monitor with hdmi input (not USB video input), I decided to get the 1503I. It's pricey but once I got it, I could see where the money went. It's a quality screen that's excellent for travel and even gaming.

According to that website the MB16AC is USB type C power and video signal, not display port =\
There are definitely cheaper options than the GeChic that use USB video, but for hdmi from the graphics card and being a dedicated display, not a USB second display, it has been working well as my sole monitor while I'm at work.

That monitor uses displayport over usb-c. That means it will only run off the iGPU of something like a MacBook or Windows device with a USB-C interface. It cannot connect to a dGPU.

I mentioned this monitor many months ago on this thread but just can't justify the cost. I'm glad someone had a good experience with it. It's really the only portable 1080 ips monitor that has real display inputs with USB power. So many of them just use USB for power and video with a display link controller and thus don't use the gpu but the cpu for rendering the image.

Good to read a real-world user review on one of these things. I had been considering one for about a year now, but they never seem to come down in price; even at that big online retailer.

I believe I saw your mention and had been looking at it too. So I figured I'd post my "review" here. It really is a great monitor and was worried about the price but have found them on sale on Amazon a couple time for about $50-$100 off. It was either go with this or mod an old laptop monitor to accept hdmi and I'm really happy with it. It games really well too and the magnetic stand is just fantastic. So I hope this helps anyone else looking for a good travel monitor even though the price is a bit beefy, so is the quality.

This looks great, I'd love to have some extra screen estate but my GTX1060 only has 1 DP so might have to run one off the i7 7700 GPU possibly if that'll let me.

Did you get delivery to UK? How long did it take?
It is in UK, i live in Finland shipping worldwide is 17 pounds and i got it in 5 days

Just use an hdmi to DP adapter. Hdmi 2.0 to dp 1.3 or 1.4 should work.

Hi everyone,

I have been lurking on this forum since January when I placed my order for a 1st batch BLACK sentry. (order #437).

I've been watching Sam-I-Am's posts with great interest since I am also in Japan:

Finally got back from my business trip, found out why my Sentry wasn't delivered yet (first batch white Sentry), shipped to Japan:

-On a customs hold since 2 June (shipped 25 May)
-got a registered mail letter notification from my on base post office (I'm US military)
-that registered mail? A notice from Japan post wanting further information about my package, shipped to a military base, whether it was for official use or personal use (of course, I told the truth and said it was for personal use). Called and found an english speaking person to talk to and they said there'd be an import tax of JPY 1000 (about $9) and delivery charge of JPY 200.
-all they needed from me was this confirm this and less than 2 hours later the updated status says "Departure from inward office of exchange", so I'll likely see it arrive tomorrow! JPY 1200 COD and I'll finally have my Sentry!

I wasn't expecting this but such is life, and I'm okay with that. Small price to pay rather than have my Sentry get shipped to my US address, which would have been shipped to Chicago then forwarded to my address, going around the world the SLOW way.

It's here! I picked it up from my post office today at lunch and took it back to my work. I unfortunately can't take my phone with me to my desk at work but I can definitely say it arrived in VERY good condition! One very small ding in the outer box, the inner box was pristine.

Here's my slightly comical way to take my package with me back to work:

Migrating everything over to my Sentry tonight!!!

My 1st batch / 3rd transport SENTRY was shipped out on June 9th, and it has finally arrived in Japan as of today!
So hopefully it will get through customs in a day or two and then I can report on the package condition.

To be honest I wasn't expecting it to arrive so soon -- I have only purchased a SFX power supply and a intel CPU cooler (LP53) but have been going back and forth on Kaby Lake vs Ryzen and also trying to restrain myself from going crazy with the GPU. My current GPU is a 660 TI which I paid about $280 for ... and yet I keep putting a 1080ti in and out of my shopping cart.

Ah well. The case will be here soon. Very excited!

1080ti is overkill, unless you're gaming above 1080p. A 1070 would obliterate a 660ti. Even a 1050ti is better than a 660ti. It's a good time to be in pc gaming, gpu performance increases this generation are huge. I went from a Radeon 7700 series to a gtx 1080. The difference is insane.

My package was shipped back on the 25th of May and looks to have been stuck not doing anything for the past 3 weeks. Has anyone else run into this? It's going to the US.

Correct, monitors that use USB for power and video do not use the gpu. Most of them use a displaylink chip embedded inside to render the image. Your cpu is what sends the data via USB to the displaylink chip so you end up with 5-10%cpu usage just to drive the display at 20-30hz.

As far as I know you can have one display on the gpu via a normal connection like hdmi or dvi, and one or more displays via USB and windows will let you use both, but the USB monitor will not use the gpu so you won't want to use it for gaming.

My package was shipped back on the 25th of May and looks to have been stuck not doing anything for the past 3 weeks. Has anyone else run into this? It's going to the US.

Is this normal? I buy stuff from Japan & China on Ebay all the time and have never seen a package just stop updating for this long.

It's probably on a ship in the middle of the ocean. Or it's sitting around customs at a port of entry in the US waiting to be handed off to usps. Just be patient.

As for China being faster that's thanks to massive volume deals like ePacket shipping. This is a single item from a small business in Poland. They don't exactly get cheap, fast, high volume shipping deals like Chinese shippers can.

This is not true. Even at 1080p 1080ti is not overkill if you want the absolute best performance in any game. No Graphic card is overkill. For example in Ultimate battle simulator if you want to have 30,000 units on screen running on ultra and all settings maxed out a 1080ti will do about 20fps on a 1080p monitor

Also are we getting any updates this Sunday? SaperPL ?

Well to be honest that's more a cpu bottleneck and not the gpu

I don't think so. GPU bottleneck not CPU. CPU is often used in physics calculations but displaying thousands of units on screen that only have like basic capsule physics collision calculations and navigation calculations takes little CPU power. What draws all the power is all the vertices calculations from the billions of animated and textured polygons in the scene. Even the 1080ti struggles.

Edit: I ran some test with my 7700k overclocked to 4.8Ghz (Previously running at base clocks) and it makes no difference. However, overclocking my 1080ti increased the frame-rate by like 4 frames on ultimate epic battle simulator with 30,000 units on screen. Ultimate epic battle is not a great example of optimized games but its a real life example of games you will find that if you wan't the best experience a 1080ti will not be overkill.

True. In the end, it really just comes down to budget. One should just buy the best cpu and gpu they can afford. I was merely trying to make the case that even a cheap gpu today is better than a good one from 3 or 4 years ago. The jump to 14nm/16nm was long overdue.

Mine (shipped to US)sat without any update and no contact from usps for about 30 days from the point it was marked as having left Poland. I got it about 32 days after that date.

Welp.

The good news is I'll probably get the case in the fall when it is colder.

X3 oh well. It will be interesting to sit and watch what you all come up with.

I have been waiting for soon to be a year for this case.
