anyone have a guess why used EVGA GTX 10 series cards selling on eBay are priced almost as high as New, often just $15 less than new? Also noticed that used card auctions are consistently almost out-pricing new cards ... surely so many buyers can't all be that foolish so what gives?

Miners. They're buying up every AMD GPU they can get their hands on, and it's had an effect on the rest of the GPU market as well.

Yep. I sold my RX 480 for $350+, and went to upgrade to a 1070. Aside from Microcenter having a MASSIVE pricing mistake yesterday, you can't find any under $400 these days.

not sure I'm understanding what you are saying here. There is no shortage of gaming cards at least that I know of so why would people pay just $20 less for a used card that, if it's not EVGA, will more than likely have no warranty (realistically speaking)?
Is it because bitcoin graphics card buyers are ignorant buyers?

Because there IS a graphics card shortage. Want proof? Try looking online for an RX 470, 480, 570, or 580. Try finding a GTX 1070 at MSRP. The only ones I see available are for $500+. Hell, if you look at Microcenter, the Zotac 1080 is listed for $50 less than the 1070.

So, in summary? There's a shortage of graphics cards. This is why I just sold a card I bought for $220 in March for $350 this past week.

The RX X80 and 1070 cards are apparently the sweet spot for currency mining.

And yeah, read the Hot Deals AMD RX thread. People are doubling their card's MSRP and it's selling instantly.

well, it's good they can use these cards for mining (like a pyramid scheme, almost no one makes money mining except the dogs at the top of the heap) because PC gaming sure is all but dead especially after the failure of Mass Effect Andromeda (financially it was good, player-wise was very not good

oh, ok, thanks for the replies

Someone would have to be mentally challenged if they can't find a 1070 under $400:

So before you insult someone, you might want to click a few of those links. I clicked 10, and all 10 were backordered.

Edit:

Here, I'll do your research for you.

B&H? 2 in stock, both over $400.

Newegg? 1070s sold by Newegg START at $409, which is the Zotac Amp.

Amazon? Lowest in stock? $448 for the EVGA FTW. Cheapest is the Gigabyte windforce at $389. With 1-2 month shipping time wait.

I clicked on two links. One is in stock right now and another is in back order until *drumroll please* tomorrow.

GTX 1070 prices haven't really spiked. If I recall correctly, the AIB cards (factory OC, etc.) usually go for more than the base price.

See this chart from PCPartPicker.

*cough*

Know what the key point was there?

Hey I just clicked on two links, I'm not sitting here all day checking for you :p Nor am I poor enough that a small price increase would prevent me from buying a GPU.

Dude, you just said I would be retarded if I couldn't find a 1070 under $400. And then to prove your point, you linked one for $450. So... Before you start throwing out insults, maybe, JUST MAYBE, back your shit up.

Deflect all you want, pookie. You're still looking pretty silly here.

Whoa whoa whoa, no need to throw around the R word here and accuse me of saying it. It's 2017 bruh, you should be more politically correct.

FYI 1070 cards are in stock right at the Nvidia store for $399. You want to keep this going? Did you get all worked up about this and didn't even check Nvidia directly? :p

If you think PC gaming is dead, you may be on the wrong forum.

Sounds like he's trying to convince himself that PC gaming is dead because he can't find a higher end GPU in the price range he's looking for. If he really believed PC gaming was dead, this thread wouldn't exist.

Prices are high. Those 1070s are at the same price they were almost one year ago. When they launched.

If you take the time to shop around, there's deals to be had. I picked up my current card for under $400 with free shipping. There are those that are high priced ( Evga, Asus, MSI).

AMD is definitely being hit harder relative to their logistical channels and definitely more Nvidia GPUs in stock than AMD.
OverclockersUK source from various channels all over Europe and even from North America, and they have zero 580s and zero 570s.
Still models of 1070 albeit the price has definitely creeped up from what it was 6 weeks ago for them.

I actually had an RX 470 I basically gave away a month ago. Had I known, would have definitely kept and sold.

However, I had some bad luck recently with ebay. Tried to sell a 1080 Ti and twice the buyers reneged. Ended up selling it to a buddy at work for $600 (since I like giving good deals).

I got my first 1070 2 weeks ago for $360, just bought a 2nd for $410.

Damn.

Yah. I am glad I found a thread about this. I have been eyeing 1060 3GBs at $160, 1070s at $360, and when 580s came out they were under $200. Now you can't get 580s, 1060 3GBs are close to $200 and 1070s are $400. I am just going to let this madness blow over before I upgrade.

Whats your setup like? I'm using 1060's
I was originally going to go with 1060s (I actually bought them, but I will return immediately) but the difference in potential was pretty big. With 6x 1060s it looks like there is potential for maybe $600/month but closer to $1,000 w/ the 1070s. Considering I don't know how long this current rush is going to last, I figured the 1070s would be better, since I could potentially break even faster and make more over the long run in the best case. For mobo I got the Asus Prime H270-Plus, Celeron G3900, 8GB DDR4, a 120GB SSD, 6x powered risers, and custom open air case on ebay. I had purchased a CoolerMaster V1200 PSU, but the seller cancelled the order and told me all the miners are buying this PSU and they were sold out and didn't know when they were getting more. I ended up splurging and getting the MasterWatt Maker 1200, which is a Titanium rated PSU with all kinds of cool features like a mobile app to read power usage, etc. However, there's almost nothing in stock now at the 1200W level, Amazon has most of the other models on 2 - 4 week back order. Looks like I'm not the only one trying to get in on this mining thing.

I've been in and out of the mining world a few times -- like a hobby that pays for other tech toys :)

I did find a nice RX 480 8GB card on amazon by chance for $300 (and I get 5% off that price) i scooped it up pretty quick to stick it to work minting ETH. Will help pay for the EVGA 1080ti that's arriving in about 12 hours :) Helps that I have super cheap power, currently 8 cents per kwh, about to sign a 36 month contract for 7.1 cents per kwh no fees, no minimums, no time of use.

This Etherium runaway pump and dump operation is an altcoin manipulator's dream.

Coincidentally, I planned on building 3 new systems (two for friends and one for me), but there doesn't seem to be any new AMD video cards in stock anywhere in Canada.

I sware some miners are straight up dumb and don't think twice. They are overspending up to 350 to 400 on fuckin rx 480 series when you can just buy a gtx 1070 and tweak it to use 120w or so and get a faster hashing rate then rx 480 series.

now to resale value. They won't be able to sell these for a 100 bucks when they want to resell them. And most people will be able to sell the gtx 1070 at $275, with left over warranty. Overall less power usage.

It makes no practical sense. People have this craze about AMD is the only thing that can mine. I have 4 gtx 1070s running right now using 110-120 watt each, running at <80% power. Averaging 61-62 mh/s a pair. About to hook up six more next week..

Yes if I could get rx 480s for 250 I would buy them, tons of them. But at 350-400? some miners have lost their mind.

It's mania all the way down. I mean, the only reason ethereum has value is mania. Same with this card buying spree.

Does that apply to 1080 as well? Could you point me to some info on this ?

you mean tweaking it for mining? 1070 are best for mining because they use gddr5. Founders edition are are the best because they use samsung memory. Almost every single one I have tried has been dead stable at 9200mhz and with power at 80%. 1080 you will likely get the same performance. GDDR5x has relaxed timing apparently and 1070s perform better. I sold my 1080ti and got 2 1070s to start off with. First evga, they were horribly unstable with memory OC. Returned them and got founders edition, averaging around 31mh/s each at around 120w. 1080ti with memory oc +500 and core OC'ed to 2050 on water was giving me 3 4 mh/s. Core clock helped on 1080ti, but on 1070 I found all that matters is memory clock.
