I don't agree it was like that.
Kaby is a REAL STRAIN for 5.0 but possible for regular overclockers
Skylake is a REAL STRAIN for 4.8 but possible for regular overclockers

200mhz, not 400mhz - there's only so much 14nm can do, with all the +++++ in the world.
Who says they'll get even more?

Also, Kaby has insane, random RUN WILD HOT issues.
I'm not convinced Coffee++ (at least the 6 core) will exceed 4.5ghz.
silicon lottery only sold 4.8 SKL but sells 5.2 KBY

Most babkys hit 5.0 and most SKL were like 4.5-4.6 thats a solid 400 MHz
 
So, is it really confirmed that coffee lake 6C/12T will be 1151 ? I heard otherwise! It will be great if it is really 1151 so that i7 7700K with Z270 will have something to upgrade to.

LAG1151 have been confirmed for quite a while. But with using the Kaby Lake platform instead of Cannon Lake. It looks promising for backwards compatibility.

Looks like the first stepping, so clocks should improve till launch. :)

Or they are going to keep clock speeds on the lower end so that the HEDT 7800k doesnt look like a wasted part. Its going to be interesting to see what the final specs are going to be. Realistically, kaby lake-x and the 7800k should not exist alongside x370 skylake unless intel intentionally handicaps coffee lake in someway. I could almost see it if they kept the original launch window of January so you didnt have both platforms competing with each other, but releasing them right on top of each other? That just makes no sense to me.

This is darth vader, I mean, intel we're talking about: never ever assume just because they are using the same socket pin-out that it will be compatible, they can alter their terms whenever they want and all you can do is pray.
There might be a psuedo-legitimate reason about VRMs and power requirements etc (though on overclocker/high-end boards that would be total bullshit) or they might block it "just because" to sell 300-series chipsets.

So what's the consensus here on upgrading a 3770K rig to a newer platform that is solely used for gaming? I know for now. 6-8 cores is more then enough for gaming and higher max overclock is more preferred over more actual cores. That being said, would you guys opt to go with the cheaper coffee lake

with the higher clock rate out of the box, or would you guys just pony up and pay for a Skylake x 10 or 12 core sku? I'm running 2 1080 Ti's at the moment but I would also like to upgrade my SSD to and NVME drive and I am still one of the hard core believers in actual hardware audio cards, so I would still like

to roll with my X-fi 7.1 in a PCI-e 1 slot. I know the PCI-E lanes add up. Any input would be appreciated!
 
Wait till August to get the 6C / 12T on the mainstream platform or wait about the same time and consider the Ryzen 1700. Most gaming will have little use for 20 threads.

Coffee Lake is the same as previous mainstream. Dualchannel, 16 PCIe lanes, 24 via the chipset that sits on its own 4 lanes. If you ask about SKL-X, all got quad channel. The 2 lowest models with 6 and 8 cores only got 28 lanes tho while the others got 44. Both still have 24 extra via the chipset over a shared link like mainstream.

I suspect it may be gimped more with a lower clockspeed so as not to make the 7800k look like a weaker part.
 
The 7700K boosts 4.5 GHz I would be really surprised to see a 6c12t chip hit the same stock. Unless you mean 1 or 2 loaded cores etc.

4.5Ghz is single core turbo for the 7700K. Else its a 4.2Ghz chip.

I actually expect CFL-S to turbo higher than 7700K due to 14nm++. Perhaps 4.7Ghz.
 
I was hopeful when I heard of 6 core coffee lake on 1151 for a nice upgrade to my g4560/h270 later, but newest rumors have a 1151 rev 2 socket.

Socket 2066 Kabylake X is a WTF... dual channel ram, 16 pci express 7740k is 7700k adapted to 2066. Half the motherboard will be useless with the low end chips. PCI-express lanes from 44 on the higher chips to the 28 on the cut chips to 16 on the mainstream port.

For the socket you have to work. But the latest Sandra leaks shows a CFL-S chip on a Kaby Lake platform.

i5 is semiconfirmed to be 4/8 tho. So I wouldn't put my bets on it.

How is it semiconfirmed? I haven't seen a single piece of data indicating that as fact, just speculation.
Maybe the 6C no HT is just HT disabled or perhaps it's a low power mobile chip or something?

It was a month ago, maybe they're the same chip and it's 'alpha' silicon for the HT = off model?
 
Well, if you consider the whole stack then yes, Kaby was mobile first.

On desktop however, high end SKUs came before low end.

Traditionally, mobile is MONTHS ahead of the desktop - and it's normally Aug / Jan, Aug / Jan, Aug, Jan (well something like that?)

So yes, if coffee lake s comes first it's new.

So much new stuff coming out.... 6 core 1151, x299, x399, etc. I think I'll sit back and let things play our for a couple months before I buy anything!
 
IMVP8 is the same as SKL/KBL so another positive sign for compatibility.

6 cores down to 35W.

How can Intel run a 6c chip with the same power limit as a 4c8t chip and not expect performance loss, ie lower clocks.

You are mixing up family range TDPs.

I was just going by the TDP from their specs.

Specs only report the thermal slots, not the real TDP of each chip. Different chips with different TDPs are joined under the same slot. This is an engineering convention. Instead designing individual cooling systems for each CPU in existence. Cooling engineers design coolers for slots. And CPU makers label the CPUs within a given slot. E.g. a CPU with a real TDP of 78W can be rated as 95W.

Are you talking about the 4c/8t or the 6c/12t coffee lake part. I havent seen final clock speeds for coffee lake released yet.
 
I saw an article today implying the Z3xx chipset coming in August is a shitty Z270 rebrand and the good version of the Z3xx will come out next year with the rest of coffee lake, including the USB 3.1 Gen 2 support.
