Far Cry 5

There are some rumors suggesting you play as a Cop, which seems to match the red/white/blue logo.
Yeah, weird. I know.

However, it’s also possible that the game is set in Montana but takes place in the present day. A reader writing into Giant Bomb, who claimed to have a friend working at Ubisoft Toronto — a studio that supported both Far Cry 4 and Far Cry Primal — said that the game would be set in modern-day Montana, and that the protagonist would be a police officer. According to the letter, a rebel group has apparently taken over part of the northwestern region of the state, and police officer must act as a vigilante in order to stop them.

Interesting scenario/statement if true. Could be a bit touchy since that almost exactly explains the Bundy rancher incident a few years back.

An open-world urban environment might actually be the change of pace the series needs. I can't imagine a cop shooting up a city being very PC outside of some sort of apocalypse, though.

Yeah, these days a rogue cop going against a "rebel" group, especially with this very scenario having happened, could be a bad decision.

Yeah I want them to go back to using guns. Why not make a FarCry 5 that takes place in a city? Like make it a FarCry-style game in a Grand Theft Auto-like city.

Then we'd have another GTA clone. I actually liked the setting of Far Cry 2. If they could do the setting justice it would be a fresh change. Africa in the 1970-80s dealing with decolonization, civil war? Would be interesting. A fictional take on the Selous Scouts would make for an interesting story line. Make the gameplay a mix between Far Cry and STALKER (no zombies, just harder, more gritty and unique locations opposed to repeated outposts and tasks). Could be interesting. Problem is I don't think that kind of a setting will get signed off. Or it will be dumbed down to the point it feels silly.

Agree with the earlier poster who talks about Ubi games all being cookie cutter affairs with the same underlying mechanics and a lot of a what I call "map trash" (i.e. maps strewn with icons for collectables and bullshit 5 min "quests").

Africa in the 1970-80s dealing with decolonization, civil war?

Would be interesting for sure but I think it would be far too controversial and the SJWs would be up in arms with screams of various "-isms" and "cultural appropriation for profit".

if the playing as a Montana cop rumors are true I'll most likely be skipping this one...sounds way too generic...at least the Himalayan one had a unique setting with elephants...

I don't see a problem with the religious angle...there are a shit ton of games depicting Middle Eastern terrorists.

That said, I'm not really sure how this would translate into a Far Cry title.

the Far Cry title means nothing now...after jumping around from tropical islands to malaria Africa back to the tropics over to Nepal and even back in time to the prehistoric Stone Age, the Far Cry name just means generic hero out to fight generic bad guys in different locales

Seems like this could be very, very controversial if true. It does seem pretty compelling at the same time. I suppose we'll find out pretty soon once verified details start getting released.

There are more trailers out today too, can't find any US links yet.
Each country/region seems to get a different teaser.

Interesting. Looks like the leak is at least partially legit. Being at work - I can't see a good quality version of the trailer. Is that video or pre-rendered graphics?

Earlier leaks mentioned a live action trailer being filmed in Montana. So I guess this is it!

FIELD TRAILER

WATER TRAILER

FOREST TRAILER

CHURCH TRAILER

Story-wise, that's fine with me - it's not really a plot that has been explored much outside of horror games. I'm just wondering if they're going to switch it up at all from the standard Far Cry formula.

lol...I give Ubisoft credit for constantly changing the Far Cry formula...this looks like it could be fun but also could go off the deep end and be cheesy...I think Outlast 2 already covered the religious zealot angle so I'm interested to see where they go with this...are they moving towards more horror over action?...will the hero be a former brainwashed cultist now out for revenge?...are they going for a more story--centric campaign versus first person shooter?

Seems like this could go the way of a horror-based FPS (i.e. RE7 but in the outdoors) given all the murder happening. I'd be a bit disappointed if that was the case.

Live-action trailers don't do it for me, I'm interested in who's announced as the voice talent in the game.

Primal wasn't a bad game, just too recycled from 4. And 4 wasn't a bad game, just a little flat after 3, which wasn't a bad game either... just... not as evocative as its first half hinted at.

But hey, here's another open-world FPS romp with I'm sure some degree of performance issues day 1, possible controversy, etc.

lol, doing base captures against religious nuts in montana, does not sound political at all....

Everything doesn't have to be associated with politics. Religious nuts are the scariest. Outlast 2 did that very well.

Btw, did anyone else get a really sinister vibe from the videos? The woman floating down the river, the screams, the person's head being banged on the bell... It would be very cool if FarCry 5 took a much more sinister and dark turn than the previous entries. I am excited for this one. I thoroughly enjoyed all the FarCry games except 2.

For those of you who played the latest Hitman game: Those high end ultra military types in that compound in Colorado... I'd love it if this were some kind of variant on that. Those were some nasty hombres and if you put a weird religious zealot component on the likes of that then so much the more. I hope this ends up being something broadly like that.

the recent far cry games have always had questionable morality. your job is to defend the weak and oppressed, and to do that you commit genocide against the oppressors, pretty much making you worse than them. It is a recurring theme in many games. Say the division, why does one group of people deserve medicine more than other groups? etc.....

This actually looks promising now, when factoring the industry has been ultra politically correct for some time now, and this would appear to be anything but.

LOL

They must reach their target audience somehow I would be happy if they made it more like Redneck Rampage or the typical person who is political on the net. They need to add a Bunker for the Home base..... I think I found my new Win 10 Lock screen wallpaper.

Look.. it's TV's "Justified" and "Outsiders" but set in Montana.

First thing I thought when I saw that, "Trump supporters are going to be pissed about this."
Can't wait to see the shitstorm around this game. /popcorn

Like the look of the setting, could be an interesting concept. if its anything like FC2 gameplay wise im in.

Much America. Such beards. Wow.

I dunno...looking at that promo above it kinda looks like it's just going to be a mafia-esque thing under a guise of cultism. None of that really screams "crazy religious cult" to me.

looks like a Jim Jones/David Koresh type of leader...what's up with the airplanes?...will their be aerial dogfights?...I'm expecting a huge compound with lots of enemies and multiple ways to accomplish missions...

According to the interwebs, the protag is a Native American. 10/10 trolling from Ubisoft. IDK How they got this game approved but man those are some giant balls.
Can't wait to play this lol.

This game is America's last defense or UBI's last defense for a game that doesn't suck.
You would think with with Far Cry Blood Dragon's popularity they would of learned from that.

That's totally Daniel Bryan sitting at the table holding the gun at the far left.

A guy with the word sinner carved in his back doesn't say anything to you?

How concerned should we all be right now? ;)

Ballsy of them, but I'm very interested. Hopefully the game itself isn't just the same thing as 3 & 4 sandwiched between controversial cutscenes.

So if the enemy is supposed to be Trump supporters, does that mean the hero is a gay liberal antifa supporter?

I would say that all ultra-conservative religious nut jobs are probably Trump supporters, but not all Trump supporters are ultra-conservative religious nutjobs. :p
