Why has Intel decided that a 2 core CPU on a laptop is now an i7?

Trying to find a decent replacement laptop for my 4c/8t i7 laptop is a bit of a pain.

Buncha lies coming from them

i7 doesn't mean anything, it's a marketing term. Why is the 6950X an "i7" when it's a 10C CPU?

Historically we all know what the i3 / i5 / i7 were. The ultra high end were special, so lets ignore the 6950X.

Now an i7 can be 2 core. Or 4. WHO KNOWS ITS A SURPRISE!!!

I tried looking for a quad-core laptop i7 myself. One thing that I learned is that, with Skylake and Kaby Lake mobile processors, a true quad-core has the letters HQ (or HK) at the end of its name. Apparently, Intel has been using the HQ code since the release of Haswell around 2013-2014.

For example, the i7-7500U is a dual-core with Hyper Threading, but the i7-7700HQ is a true quad-core.

Another example of a quad-core is the i5-7300HQ. Because it's an i5, however, it doesn't have Hyper Threading.

You can search Intel's mobile processors site for the full list by generation and model (e.g., i3, i5, i7).

Well, you have to ignore the entire HEDT line then. They're almost all more than 4 cores, and all i7s. So an i7 can be anything from 2-10 cores.

I actually find the suffix designation to be much more informative than the prefix designation.
