rgMekanic from the HardForum brought this to my attention this evening. Prey and its Denuvo DRM was cracked in 10 days or less. Die Denuvo die....

Ah, Denuvo; the anti-tamper tech that a lot of gamers hate. And while some people may claim that this attitude comes from the fact that the games powered by it are hard to crack, the latest triple-A game powered by it, PREY, has already been cracked.

Hopefully they will release an update to remove it in steam like they did for Doom. From "uncrackable" to less than 10 days, hopefully this kills Denuvo's chances at any future deals..
I doubt it. The first two weeks count so much for a game's sales, honestly I have no problem with DRM that saves the initial sales, but doesn't make the game unplayable in the long term.

I really don't like a time limited DRM. evne if it was 6 months or a years. the only issue i would have with drm is when they activation/confirmation server shut down years after and you copy is unplayable.. kinda liek how multipalyer games dont have a sever multiplayer server built into them anymore.

i don't condone piracy in anyway but i also hate not having control of my game and be able to play it years later. heck im playing Civ2 rigt now. and i played masteer of irion (dos) las year

Why are people even making this news?
Don't you think promoting weak ass drm is good for everyone? publishers think their product is protected, but it's simple to remove for anyone in the know?

You may want to read up on Denuvo, it's not like simple "steam has to be running" or "disk must be in drive" kind of a thing.

funny thing is we all know why NieR is still not cracked :p

Dunno if you're just making a crack pun, but it is cracked already.
A crappy P2P bypass that requires a steam emulator and crashes constantly, sure go for it. It's a mess.

Why should they remove Denuvo? The only people that mind are pirates, it's invisible to legit purchasers of a game.

These buggy steam bypasses of the past few days aren't "cracking Denuvo" anyway, they're exposing weaknesses in the Steam integration chain that Valve is sure to address.

Denuvo is really only meant to work during the initial launch period...Denuvo then either gets cracked or removed on its own

I'm going to guess that your average underpaid game developer knows how to find a warez copy of their own game. :) Its not like warez groups make their stuff hard to find.

Well, generally speaking most AAA titles are popular during the launch period and die off not long after, so it kind of makes sense.

Anyone for a game of Star Wars Battlefront?

Would those that would pirate it really pay for the game just to have it a couple of weeks early? Highly doubtful. I don't believe they are saving any sales at this point and good games without any DRM are proof enough that it is not needed at any point.

What about Starforce in past ? Denuvo didn't learn lesson, Denuvo might be dead anyday.
What makes you think Denuvo does the same thing that starforce did and that it has not learned any lessons from the past?

If DRM didn't work I doubt manufacturers would pay for it.

And just think that the resources spent on denuvo could have been spent on a proper demo for PC. Glad they have the priorities of their paying customers in order.

I agree about the resources but PC demo is no longer necessary with Steam refunds. You just get something and refund if you don't like with less than 2 hours of game time. I would rather they spend the time to fix games so they don't release broken on day 1 than have a demo, though I do miss demos from back in the days. Regarding DeNuvo, what's the issue? The only people who complain about it are pirates, I've not had any issues with it in the games that I've purchased. If it doesn't cause any performance or crashing to legitimate customers, why would you even care whether or not it's in the game?

Yeah but these guys deserve no sales, making little indie studio making Prey for the Gods change the name to Praey for the gods years after they start work on a game.

This polished turd is at least the right price now since I own all 3 bioshocks which this blatantly rips off. Zenimax and Bethesda can eat a fat one

but doesn't make the game unplayable in the long term.

This is the key. Remember that game chronicles of riddick and escape from butcher bay? Those games (at least on steam) are unplayable due to their securom not liking something in windows 10 or the date. Last time I tried to play it I kept getting errors.I researched the errors and discovered it was securom (or whatever they used) related and then I got pissed.

When DRM prevents you from playing a game THAT YOU FUCKING PAYED FOR that is when it goes too far.

Windows 10 does not support SecuROM. Good riddance. The version that came with GTR2 back in the day killed my DVD±RW drive at the time. The fucker buried itself so deeply into the OS that the only sure way to get rid of it was with a secure wipe of the drive it was installed on, also known as nuking it from orbit.

Nothing will ever be 100% secure. Someone will always find a way around it. Just let it die already.

I honestly don't have any problem with Denuvo. It protects the game during the initial launch window which drives sales, it doesn't fuck with the game when you're actually playing it and developers tend to patch it out after the launch window is up (I have no idea if they do this themselves or if it's something that Denuvo puts in the contracts but I see it happen an awful lot for it to be a developer's decision). For the big triple-A titles it makes perfect sense and as a DRM scheme it seems to be remarkably consumer friendly when compared to the older methods.

That is no proper substitution. Main reasons are you have to PAY the full price to try in the first place, you have to bother with the refund process to get you money back and you have only two hours to determine both what settings you can run the game at and how is the game itself.

I would rather they spend the time to fix games so they don't release broken on day 1 than have a demo, though I do miss demos from back in the days.
Not having demos hasn't stopped publishers from releasing buggy games all the time.

1. I don't trust what it does or doesn't do with my system and data
2. it's yet another failure point that could prevent me from playing the game sometime in the future

Yeah, that was pretty shitty...I backed PftG.

Also, why bother insisting on using the title "Prey" when it has nothing to do with the original game?

They keep trying to make these games with DRM. I hope it doesn't cost much to do, since like this game, they are cracked fast.

Guess I'll only be able to play it again if I crack it, but I'm afraid doing that will piss steam off and they may flag my account. Ugh...

Damn shame too, they were good games.

Assualt on Dark Athena still works, as far as I'm aware. It includes the Director's Cut of Escape from Butcher Bay and is still available to buy on Amazon. You just have to install the newest version of Tagés. Now, whether or not Tagés is any better than SecuROM is questionable, but at least it still works on Windows 10.

Oh believe me, I HATE when companies make games unplayable in the long term by design because they don't give a flying shit what happens to it 1-2 years out. My point is that if copy protection only works in the short term, but doesn't interfere in the long term, then that's kind of win-win.

Would those that would pirate it really pay for the game just to have it a couple of weeks early? Highly doubtful. I don't believe they are saving any sales at this point and good games without any DRM are proof enough that it is not needed at any point.
Honestly, I think it does make a real impact, though of course this stuff is almost impossible to get numbers on.

You can't use Steam refund to demo a game. After multiple refunds they warn you that anymore may not be honored. The refunds are there to save you from a mistake of buying a shit game (i.e. No Man's Sky). Piracy is still the best and proper way to demo a game.

Nope. Works perfectly. Must be a different crack.
You'd know better than me. I glance at reddit occasionally, and saw lots of whining pirating kiddies on the first day - that it was a buggy, crashprone mess with lots of steps to get working.

I get mine from a more reputable source. It's a one-click installer and that's it. Nothing else to do.

This. I don't care what the ethics are here, there are just not enough demos of games available. I've purchased every game I thought was worth it. If it isn't worth it, I don't play it anyway. I'm really glad I played the cracked version of No Man's Sky first as I was very prepared to buy it initially. What a letdown.

id Software removed it when it was cracked because, at that point, it was harming the experience for no reason.

I did mind denuvo in Doom very much and I am no pirate. Waiting a minute for authentication is hardly invisible.

Now, was your reply fueled by ignorance or disdain for pirates?

I'm gonna guess disdain for pirates. I won't even use Uplay anymore because of how ridiculous it can be sometimes.

Being a software developer myself, I understand the need for copy protection.

That being said, copy protection is more like a deadbolt on the front door. Someone who wants to get into your house will simply smash the picture window right next to it.

It is only there to keep the (mostly) honest folks honest.

I do admire the folks who cracked it though. I am sure it took a lot of effort.
