Coming from an iPhone 7 Plus, I used the feature of YouTube playing in the background on a daily basis.

On my new Android phone I start playing a news clip or song then tab out to my web browser or stop watch, or any other app, and the media goes off.

How do I keep YouTube playing the background ?

There are methods that don't use the YouTube app (and use the browser of your choice, like Chrome or Firefox) - the only way to get background playback happening with the official YouTube app is subscribing to YouTube Red it seems, pretty lame crap considering but that's how it goes. There's a modified YouTube app available but it requires a rooted device to work properly:

Good find, thx. Well that sucks that the stock iPhone lets it be played in the background no problem, no Jailbreak. And new Android phones can't be rooted like the S8+ and G6, so

I believe you have to be a subscriber to either YouTube Red or Play Music (the subscription comes included with each other as a perk) in order to get background playback on the stock YouTube app on the iPhone.

YouTube Red is $12.99 ($9.99 for first time subscribers)
Play Music individual is $9.99 ($7.99 at one point)
Play Music family is $14.99

I had my play music subscription cancelled some years ago, and YouTube Red cancelled last year, so if I want to be a subscriber to YouTube Red, it'll be cheaper for me to join play music individual. Or just pay $2 more for the play music family plan assuming my family wants it.

It shouldn't unless you are subscribed to Youtube Red. Are you sure you aren't on a trial? If you are a google music subscriber or are on a trial of that, it comes with Red also.

The G6 has root (On T-Mobile). Just no recovery yet.

As for the S8, meh. I still haven't rooted my S7, and I honestly see no reason to anymore. AdGuard/AdHell eliminates 90% of the reason I rooted anyways.

On my iPhone 7 Plus, I was using some program called 'ProTube' on stock iOS, not jailbreak or anything;
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/protube-for-youtube/id931201696?mt=8

I could start a video, and then move to do something else, and it would remain playing in the background until I manually closed it down. I get so used to it, and really liked it, now it's a shock not to have something like it on Android.

Zor, open it in firefox on Android and it will play in the background. Personally, I couldn't stand this. If I'm out of the video I want it to stop playing.

On my 7 Plus, I go to YT in Firefox, play the video, close FF, then swipe up from the screen bottom to open the Control Center. Swipe Left and click the Play button to run YT in the background.

Found another way to get Firefox to play YT in the background. Install this extension:

https://addons.mozilla.org/pl/firefox/addon/video-background-play-fix/

I had to paste the link directly in my FF browser on my phone. It didn't come up in any search of extensions.

Thanks!!

FF YT had worked flawlessly (well most of the time, sometimes it bugged a bit to get going) on background for me until couple of weeks ago when it suddenly broke for some reason. But this fixed it!
