Coffee Lake improves on both aspects: number of cores and higher clocks (thanks to the new 14++ node).
so they claim...we shall see. They did make good on that with kaby lake so i am hopeful we will see better clocks again.

Worth remembering Broadwell-E across nearly all the SKUs would do 4GHz at just 1.2V all cores.
So Intel would be pretty safe hitting the new spec with the latest design/node, and probably do 4.5GHz all cores, again with very safe voltages.

Cheers

Broadwell was shit across the board and i was referring to process improvements not arch.

We are also talking about mainstream (LCC) not E/server chips (MCC/HCC).

Broadwell had the C chips which were awesome. 5775C, 5675C -- socketed Iris Pro. No such thing in Skylake or Kaby Lake.

In my case it's about games and their ability to benefit from more cores tbh. Right there's none or a very minor difference (if there rarely is) between 4/8 and anything higher. Especially at 1440p. And I have to remind myself about it all the time when I start experiencing CFL hype again and again. Seems that I like fiddling with pc hardware more than actually using it for gaming!
That's the best part though, unlike with mediocre Ryzen, if you get CFL, you get that intel IPC, that intel overclockability AND 6/12. Seriously if CFL really is a 1151, 4.5ghz overclocks with 6/12 under $380 US - it's going to be THE chip to buy without the bad AMD shortcomings (oh and for me, as a non gamer? - no need to buy a stupid video card either!)

AMD made all kinds of BS statements before ryzen was released and it sounded good but we see now that it was all talk, IF it could have been made the same speed as intel it would have been great but it is not.

God damn it's good to post somewhere, where a group of rabid AMD fanboys won't screech like children when you call it how it is.
(FWIW, I'm disappointed in that thing, would've loved it to be good, it ain't)

Isn't good compared to what? Ryzen has obsoleted the entire Intel line-up except the G4560 and 7700K.

No it really hasn't - have you actually looked at the prices they're charging for them? The 7700k is faster in a heap of benchmarks and it's //barely any slower// in several multi-threaded.
A small handful of VERY specific benchmarks, the 7700k is beaten - by chips which cost more and don't come with a 'free' GPU.

If the 1600 (non +) overclocked to about 5ghz, it would be god damn great, but as it stands? No, Ryzen fits very specific needs for some people. It also opens a maybe option for people to 'sidegrade' too if their hardware.
: Dies
: They sell it for more than it's worth
: They hand me down to someone generously
: They're getting into PCs and it's their first system

But for anyone with an Intel 3xxx series CPU or newer? To 'upgrade' to Ryzen doesn't seem logical to me, not when they already (seemingly) own their existing hardware.

Ryzen has some short comings but it is an awesome chip for the price if you need cores over single thread. It has severely hurt intel E series assuming you dont need single thread. I am looking forward to the 16 core that is coming out. I would love to see a 16 core for 1000 dollars for my server that supports ECC.

The real issue with ryzen is single thread but it has made massive improvements over AMD previous CPUs and saying it is a let down is being disingenuous. As far as I remember it hit all of AMDs promises. I don't recall reading that review and being like AMD claimed this and it didnt happen. It hit or beat overall all the IPC claims.

It definitely isn't the go to chip for the masses but for threaded workloads it is a steal.

I would never use it in my main rig because single thread is most important to me but for my server I would love to throw in a 16 core version because intels 16 core is robbery and also locked.

Well you're in a similar place to the rest of us. I want the best day to day desktop, that's where it falls short.

I'd love the six core edition, at 30% lower clicks and certified for 45w operation for my freenas server, totally. Although then there's the AMD platform support and stability for bsd or Linux sadly....

It basically offers little I actually want, and make no mistake, I'm a scrooge, I'd gladly save money, but it isn't enough.

(I refuse to buy 7700k either, too expensive, waiting for coffee)

What do you mean? We know everything besides clocks. Even die size is known (149mm2) :)
What are you talking about?

CFL news isn't official and the past three weeks have been alarmingly focused on 2066 pins of expensive stuff

If you want official news, then you dont have much on LGA2066 either.

But we know almost everything about CFL-S.

I wasn't aware that slide existed. Do we know if 65, 85, 91, 95W models will be made or just laptop ones? I fear we may end up seeing low power only and Sky / Kaby - X are the new powerhouses for desktops?

Well, Skylake-X is due out before Coffee Lake, so that's not really surprising that info is trickling out now.

CFL-S=Desktop and its 35, 65 and 91/95W chips. I wouldn't be surprised to see something with 4Ghz base and 4.5Ghz turbo. It contains GT2 as well.
CFL-H=6 cores+GT2.
CFL-U=4 cores+GT3e.
CNL-U/Y=2 cores+GT2.

6C/12T Coffee Lake-S to arrive in late August:

DigiTimes said:
Intel is also expected to unveil its top-end Basin Falls platform consisting of Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X processors and X299 chipsets, targeting gaming, virtual reality (VR) and overclock markets, at Computex 2017 with official releases at the end of June. The launch of Intel’s 14nm Coffee Lake platform has also been shifted forward to late August from January 2018 to counter AMD’s rapid advances.

So will these new processors go in mobos that currently have i7 7700k processors ? Simple.

Perfect timing for me. Birthday in August so now I know what my wife will be buying me!

KabbyLake-X and Skylake-X are LGA2066 is for the HEDT platform.

CoffeeLake is on the mainstream platform.

There will be a new chipset however I am not sure what the support will be on current lga1151 boards.

Like there aren't plenty of AMDrones around these parts that are paid and unpaid. Funny you say go back to AnandTech since that is one of the most AMDrone infested forums on the net.

Could've been worse, he could've said Techreport. A previously fantastic place, it's impossible, IM-POSS-IBLE to discuss processors there without offending an AMD Zealot. Fine, Ryzen is a big big improvement, but it does not, in any way, 100% overtake the 7700k, it simply doesn't. Depends on your needs.

to make such a claim on that site is now heresay. Total idiots.

no one says it over takes a 7700K.

anyone does is an idiot.

7700K is king in 99% task but if you need threads zen is go to on a budget. I am stoked for 16 core. If it sells for 1000 and supports ECC I am going to do my damnness to dump my 1650v3 for that. I'll take the 10-20% single thread hit for 2.5-3x mulithread boost. If i have the money.

Ehh if I were building today I'd probably just get the R5 1600 and save some money. It's probably going to overtake the 7700K in multi-threaded games eventually and the difference really only matters on 144 Hz monitors atm. For all other tiers I would go Ryzen without hesitation. Although I think there's still some low-end R3 CPUs on the way to fill out the cheaper end of the stack.

It's kind of silly to say Ryzen is a 'loser' since the 7700K keeps the crown. Not everybody wants to spend $300+ on a CPU and not everybody wants to buy a quad core for that kind of money.

Going by popular trends on BAPC these days, Ryzen is hands down the king. And believe me I hate validating & encouraging the toxic AMD fanbase but here we are.

EDIT:
I mean just look at this.

[CPU] Ryzen 5 1600 - $169.34 ($218.15 - $30 TRIPLE15 - 10% ibotta first purchase cash back) (jet.com)

Ryzen 1600 for $169.34.

Zen would be awesome for my NAS if it was 4/8, 45w, supported ECC, supported mITX, supported 8x SATA3 and was dirt cheap.
That's what appeals to me with Zen.

For Desktop, nope - but you'll find wallies on Techreport who will defend the Zen to the death, they're idiots.

Bah. Techreport is a clean garden compared to SA forums. On TechReport forums you can at least find threads devoted to Coffee Lake. Try to open any similar thread on SA forums and you will get hundred of personal attacks and mods carefully looking your response. And saying that RyZen doesn't overtake the 7770k is taken therein as a kind of heresy.

I wouldn't bother discussing technology at the SA forums, but maybe that just shows my age.
God I want more info on this damn CPU, I'm limping along here.
