Netflix Gives Controversial "13 Reasons Why" Series More Viewer Warnings

Does this mean I’m going to get a content warning before every episode of The Punisher, and pretty much anything that features violence, sex, or other “uncomfortable” content from now on? After a bit of outrage, Netflix was forced to add notices before episodes featuring sexual assault and suicide in one of their latest hits, “13 Reasons Why,” and now they’re doubling that effort by adding yet another before the premiere episode. I should probably watch the show first, but this smells like manufactured drama and overreaction.

There's not a more controversial series on TV right now than 13 Reasons Why, the Netflix original which centers around bullying, rape and youth suicide. While the show has been rated for mature audiences (TV-MA) since its debut on March 31st, Netflix has been criticized for only placing graphic content warnings on a few episodes, namely those that contained sexual abuse and suicide scenes. But, amid backlash from mental health organizations and even lawmakers in some countries, the streaming service is adding more content warnings to its series.
 
I will say, as a dad 13 Reasons Why hit me pretty hard even though it was unrealistic and overdramatic, and the rapes and the suicide of a child are hard to watch. I don't think those are things The Punisher is going to deal with. At least on screen.

I could have used a few disclaimers right before half the gore-shots in Fortitude.....hmmm...I smell a march on Washington.
 
I agree with this, as a parent the more information you can give me the better I am at making an educated decision..

most of you can say what you want, but I can't tell you how many shows I've turned off after finding content I don't enjoy nor are ok with my family watching..


And yes, i'll take any warning of content on any show at any time (there have been PG13 shows I've turned off).. give me all the information and let me decide..

one of the biggest issues ive run into with Netflix is some shows have no rating (NR) and you just have to decide based on the synopsis if itmight be ok..

one show I sat down to watch that was NR, within the opening scene was enough F-words that I couldn't turn it off fast enough (are you all surprise - some of us don't like this?)
 
OMG no, shelter me from people being sheltered from reality. Watch the series, it's somewhat disturbing and there's a lot of children watching it. Oh wait, being informed isn't part of your MO in online bitching about shit.
 
I could see this as overdramatic if watched from an outsider, but you dont know what it is going on youth minds, sometimes they cant handle everything around them, sum up that their parents did not give attention to her when she needed it, and her friends betrayed her just like it was nothing. I personally did think about what would happen to the world without me when I was in highschool. I never attempted to do it, but I did imagine a world where I was simply gone and dead. It was pretty sad.

Friggen +1 for Fortitude! Flip side, I'm TIRED of nanny state, government, services, etc, dictating what I get to watch. It's all got to be sanitary like a hospital. I guess warnings are fine, but they should be pretty base and fast. I feel as if buying a video game, watching a movie or TV show, or listening to a song is nothing more than a product that you must do your research on before you buy.
 
Sometimes warnings are appreciated. I know rapes and murders occur, I read the news. But I won't watch it portrayed on the screen, literally makes me puke. The first time I walked was the "Generals Daughter?" Demi Moore movie... I watch shows to relax and have fun, not to get angry and want to kill some folks. Two people bumping uglies and having a great time is porn and evil, someone raping someone is "great art, Oscar worthy". Got it.
 
I watched it and personally believe the series did a great job of highlighting the issue with bullying in schools and youth suicide. The issue does exist, ignoring it won't rectify anything, even if it highlights the issue to parents perhaps a positive can come out of it? How many parents out there have tried to get information out of their child over how their school day was? We have no idea.

Should teens just stick to Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 like mind numbed machines? Is that 'safe' for them?

lol what exactly is the nanny state sanitizing from you? please tell.. IMO in this country you can pretty much watch any content on any medium at any time.. (unless you are calling Netflix the nanny state, I'm sure they even have a limit to the content they have on by their own choice mind you)

the nanny state isn't doing anything to your viewing.. now sure you have to go through some "I'm 18" type scenarios.. but as a society that just makes sense.. we don't need rape scenes depicted on public billboards in front of elementary schools..

some of you I don't think would be happy with anything short of the extreme underage sexual assault/violence with extreme realistic gore-tastic violence added in.. (and you some how call that reality lol)...
 
The warning is for parents and teens with really easily manipulated minds. The lot of you think, this isn't for me, but the shit kids go through these days is tough on them and something like this can paint suicide in a favorable light. I'm sure all your high school lives was picture perfect that you couldn't have been influenced by media like this.
 
If someone commits suicide, it is a pretty dramatic event, if only in their mind.
 
These warnings are a good thing. They can be ignored and aren't sheltering anyone from anything. We, as human beings, are able to decide for ourselves if the warnings are or aren't justified. If they don't apply to you, ignore them and move on.
 
I just want the old rating system back...I keep wasting time watching shit shows that would have been pretty obviously downvoted to oblivion. This Percent match garbage is pure bullshit. It is all like oh hey this show is a 95% match for you, get 30 minutes in and realize I have never watched a show like it and it is awful. So what happens? It is like hey you watched 30 minutes of that 3 hour train wreck you must want to watch more like that!

I've seen more strong men, grown adults, kill themselves than teens. Life doesn't get any easier and the mind is a powerful thing.

F' that. As a parent YOU are responsible for what your kid watches. You should review it BEFORE the kid sees it. And by kid I mean under 18...teenagers are still children until they legally become adults.

Your house, your rules. You control the tv. There are plenty of parental controls available. A simple one for netflix is to not have the password saved. Problem solved.

They might go around you and pay for it themselves...but thats a discipline problem not a problem with the content. Do you think they give two shits (the teenager) about warnings? Nope...all that porn I saw as a kid I just clicked right past the you must be 18 yrs old to look at this warnings....

However 17 year olds are not paying for netflix. They will get account passwords from their friends.

If you have a 17 year old that doesn't respect you as a parent then you fucked up a while ago and it's probably too late for recovery. At that point I would think you would rather them watch stuff like this than some of the other stuff on the web.

As a parent your primary jobs should be 1) keep your kids safe and 2) teach them to make good decisions. Content warnings help accomplish #1 but #2 is all you.

There is plenty of ways to get that without every show, movie or other form of entertainment giving you 15 minutes of warning of why you might be offended. The brief warning they had on two episodes I personally felt were a tad overboard. It is a show about a girl that killed herself and is going through the 13 people that lead her to do it. Of course the show will be about suicide.

If you want to make educated choices then do it on your own without forcing your views and opinions on everyone else. That is your job to parent your kids and nobody else.

Agree, as a parent you do the best you can.
Question:
1. Do you have children over 17yrs of age?
If yes, have they always respected you? Or at least to the best of your knowledge never lied, cheated or stole.

2. If you are older than 17, did you respect your parents and never lie to them?

When my 4 are over 17, then I will come back and let you know how I did ;) *crossed fingers*

How did having a disclaimer on a vid turn into state parenting... to hell with my kids... *I* want that warning. Yeah I really want to know that I can opt out of watching a rape scene before I set eyes on it because I'm not some unfeeling death row candidate who gets off on that shit.
 
You assclowns making mountains out of molehills saying it's violating safe spaces or a parent's job to review everything or that it's nanny state bullshit can fuck right off. It's nothing more than a warning for people that either don't want to see or to specifically give them the opportunity to be sure the most realistic depiction of suicide I've ever seen outside of the real thing is something their kid can handle. There's nothing being censored, it's a goddamn courtesy. And yes, I've seen an actual suicide happen. Zero stars, do not recommend.
 
I am pretty sure netflix is not forcing anyone to watch the series, it has an MA rating so wth are people bitching about.

So you're saying its easy to control what an almost adult teen watches, when you also say you watched whatever you wanted as a child easily. Riiiiiiiight.
 
My niece told me to watch it. I asked her if iooked like some angst-ridden teenager. A lot more fun to watch shows about homicide and I couldn't care less about people killing themselves.
