PowerColor Red Devil RX 580 Golden Sample Overclocking @ [H]

Not too shabby. Limited by board power. Do you think if you had higher board power options the memory could of been clocked higher?

Would love to see this go against that new 1060 9Gbps card that just got released.

And that power....0_o wowsa thats a pretty big jump imo.

I was going to comment how impressed I was at how little power it was using with max overclock. I just hit 900W system draw with 2 290x so looking at 700W for a system like this at 300mhz faster is pretty nice achievement over the previous node.

300mhz faster than what?.. your OC'd GPU are stronger than what the RX480/580 can offer.. you are praising the power of a GPU that is 3.5 years newer than your 290X and it can just barely offer slightly lower power consumption at about the same performance?. is a joke, right? you forgot the /Sarcams at the end of your statement?. the only true good thing about the RX 580 it's the price, nothing else as everything else it's a failure even more that what the RX 480 represented when it was new.

Jesus, what's your review of the 1060 SSC

Rip it apart because it has less ram, doesn't SLI, barely faster than a 970 and falls way behind in Vulkan API that will see a large adoption due to Unity implementing it?

and when I mentioned GTX 1060? when I mentioned Nvidia?. im speaking this as several AMD GPU owner, not as a fanboy like your statement prove you to be, and sadly with fanboys no one can have discussion.. The RX 580 It's a POS specially at this time in the market period, it is the card the RX 480 should has been with a respin to fix their power issues, this is a "High end" model of the RX 580 that carries a 270$ price premium, damn that's even more sad as price is the only defense of this card against Nvidia.

Hi there. First post in a long time (forgot my last user)

I was able to achieve similar results using a Nitro (regular) RX 480 4G, modding the BIOS (timings, TDP/TDC, etc) ... So, unless I got a golden sample, I believe is quite possible to achieve high overclocks with an RX 480 (non reference).

Validation (kind off): http://www.3dmark.com/spy/1604739

That was with +84mv using TRIXX. Maybe tonight I´ll try to hit 1500@96mv ... In any case, I see a big difference in numbers and performance modding the memory straps.
Polaris loves bandwidth and tight timings.

Cheers

PS: I don´t know how reliable HWINFO is for peak wattage, but I got between 175/180W peak @ load.

True but compared to the power/1060 performance on a node shrink, Amd does have some work to do.

Now this is a good card, I mean its pretty impressive, just needs to be a lil lower on the price.

= exactly why i bought a GTX 1060.. THANK YOU HAROCP ..i dont wana waste cash on a AMD gpu guess now ..this AMD 580 series should have shipped mounts ago as Nvidia already bumped the mem on the NEW gtx 1060 CARDS
as well as clock speeds ..new shoot out ????

, once ya get the new GTX 10 1060 1070 , 1080 cards vs the AMD variants ?

Rx480 does not SLI, is barely faster than a 970 and falls way behind in Vulkan too, because i said so.

This is Polaris pushed well past its performance/watt curve. Not made for cool and quiet applications this iteration. Nvidia hands it to them in performance/watt. But I believe Polaris is a more futureproof design as we move into DX12/Vulkan over pascals uarch. Wattage is of no concern to many of us in the enthusiast side of things. I really only care about the performance and future support of my cards. Nice to see them hitting 1500 on air! Im upgrading this fall, looking forward to Vega and maybe even Volta by then!

Again I´m just using TimeSpy for reference. I believe all cards mentioned (970/1060 290/480) perform more or less the same (power consumption aside):

http://www.3dmark.com/compare/spy/1604739/spy/48756/spy/1111215/spy/1469492

I agree with the general opinion that somehow RADEON messed it up at launch date, but the "old" Polaris10 is capable of RX 580 performance today. Besides, at least Samsung Memory is capable of surpassing the 9Gbps GDDR5 speed, at least in my case. Don´t know if they are shipping RX 580/70 with Hynix or Elpida chips.

About the power board, I believe I´ve seen somewhere that actually the original RX 480 was OP regarding that aspect. Sadly voltage is also managed internally by the GPU (no external controller chip), so if you get unstable memory speeds you´ll have to modify the BIOS using a HEX EDITOR (thought I remember a couple of days ago a saw somewhere that WattMan was capable of modifing the automatic paramater for real). In any case don´t be afraid and mod the hell out of RX 480/470 Bios ... even from AIBs, it does leave room for improvement. =)

Not clear on this review who has better performance when everything is maxed out, Nvidia 1060 or AMD 580. One game results? Not sure of the concern over the name, makes it easier not to confuse them. For example: Having 3 Titan X's with minor variation in the name, that can be very confusing. Now we are going to have two distinct 1060's with the same name?

Long term longevity or viable card points more towards the 580 then the 1060 is what I am seeing. Still I think it depends on the build, for anything small, out of the way or just 1080p gaming I would recommend a 1060. Hell with both of those cards come to think about it -> instead of a premium 1060 or 580 just get a 1070 on sell - way more worth it if one has the extra budget which frankly many would not have at this point.

What does the non-premium 580 OC to? Is it close? $40-$50 at this level is a significant factor. The Golden Sample looks to be very high quality, I like PowerColor as well, I would just not be a buyer for this card.

Lets see a review of the 580 maxed out against a 1060 maxed out. Lets see them both at their limits

I'll claim that 580 probably wins by a hair. Maybe even by Rapunzel.

But with TCO associated with it, may as well get a 1070 instead.

Got my Gigabyte Aorus rx 580 running at 1485 and 9000 on memory. my card stock is 1425 does it at 1.13-1.15v, its more arund 1.14 average. OC 1470 I am at 1.18v, OC 1485 I am at 1.21v. Now that is the max volts I can push it. I know power color golden sample model is stock like 1.2v and there is additional 96mv you can get through afterburner. So my card is on the lower end of the voltage. This is rock stable tested with an hour loop of unigine super position bench at 2560x1440 resolutions.

If I could get the same volts on it as the Golden sample allows I am probably hitting 1500+ on it. But I am really happy with 1485 at 1.2v average. That is what the golden sample is at stock, actually little more at 1.22v from this review.

As far as power I don't know what is the best tool to use. Aferburner gives me a straight smooth curve and at 1.21v it says I am using about 180w. At 1470 I am at 160's for wattage.

Temps are nice and cool. Card stays in the 62-65c range after a while of stress test. Card gets little audible but not bad at all.

So I guess I would rather take 1485 and 9000 on memory at 1.21v then 1500 and little 8800 on memory at 1.26v. Not to mention I have the fan speed on auto.

I believe the new 1060's will have the + or "Plus" moniker like the new 1080's do.

Honestly if you're gaming at 1080p I think your best option is one of the RX470s that have been popping up for $120-150ish. Then save a few bucks and see what Vega has in store or pick up a 1070 for cheaper when the 470 starts to struggle.

The 1060 G1 gains about 10% performance with a 6% core o/c and a whopping 18% memory o/c (9.4 GB/s) https://www.hardocp.com/article/2017/01/23/gigabyte_geforce_gtx_1060_g1_gaming_6g_review/4

The 1060 9 GB/s will be able to over clock the memory further (10 GB/s at least). The speed boost on the memory really helps performance of the 1060, so I will lean towards the 1060 on this battle.

Well, reviews have surfaced. Not really a big gain for the GTX 1060+ over the regular one. Maybe memory timings are all over the place (similar to Polaris).
IMHO, Polaris would have benefited more from this higher performance memory.

Yeah, I saw the guru review. Less than 5% in most games with core clock the same. Core o/c ability was slightly lower also.

Great review, thanks guys. I just purchased an Asus RX 580 8GB to go with an LG 4k freesync display I have laying around. Will be running some tests tonight with Andromeda to see how it pans out. I love G-sync and can't live without it, hopefully Freesync makes that 4k monitor playable. I do enjoy 144hz but TN panels take away from the experience, at least for me.

After seeing this article I gone and get one myself, the card looks even better in real person and feels great.
I guess I got a golden sample ahah mine 1515Mhz stable, with fans also set at 75%.

One of the best looking cards I've had recently running anything at 1080p highest settings.

I would take my chances with tighter memory timings :) check if you can modify them using Polaris Bios Editor. Maybe you can get 2 or 3 more FPS. :)

I wonder, did you by any chance buy your RX 480 recently? My thinking is that may be you benefitted from the improvement in yields same way as 580 is.

That looks thicker than typical 2 slot card. Is it 3 slot? Do cards report their thickness?

One thing that people forgot , this is a battle of the fabs and AMD can control pricing now a lot better and Zen showed us how good these Fab's are at going after Intel and Nvidia at the same time with all new hardware.

As for the 290x .. this was the last one made before the release of 390/390x and called the Sapphire Tri X 290X New Edition clocked at 1020/1350 with new 6 phase power design and afew other goodies under the hood like Samsung memory.. they fixed the under gaming load clocks to keep it at 1020Mhz and the card runs around 65c under gaming load, my platform is 7 years old with a mild overclock ,

In UNIGINE 2 it scores 8274 in 1080p med at the stock 1020/1350 clock on an old ass driver and that is 68th place without evening overclocking it...

come on people it took them a year just to get their top of the line 580 up to the speeds of a 1060.
I don't know if AMD said it but so many people are saying got the fabs running now. Whoopie (sarcastic)

If vega is as big a failure as I expect it to be, all hype, a year after shouting from the roof tops about it, AMD migh as well go home to Saudi Arabia.

Couple of months ago. That´s my take too, but you should also take into account that I live in Argentina, so it´s not like we get the latest hardware lighting fast (Ryzen was another story, somehow samples were being sold on the market just before launch date :p).
The thing is I won the lottery getting the Samsung chips :) ...

In any case, the point stands... Reconfiguring memory timings is great for this card. Got the idea from the Ethereum miners.
