Uber Engineer Who Made $170K per Year Commits Suicide Due to Job Stress

So fucking this. You people think only high paying jobs are stressful. Trying working in a restaurant or hell even fast food. Managers and workers are constantly under pressure to perform. If their numbers not up to standards set they will get axed. All for $12 an hour.

And it would be equally sad if those fast food workers suffered from depression and committed suicide. I just don't see the amount of money someone made as being particularly relevant here. Going home to a fancy house/car/TV/etc does very little to assuage feelings of depression and anxiety, despite advertising constantly telling you buying their products is the key to happiness.

You could ask "what does he have to be depressed about?" which is valid question if you only think about things logically, but the person with depression/anxiety/etc isn't thinking logically or rationally. That's pretty much the definition of mental illness.

1st world problems .... I'll have pity if he was dodging IEDs and Bombs from airplanes.. or needed money to eat... otherwise wth are you crying about! and to off oneself... even dumber... maybe Im being insensitive but I find this ridiculous at best..

This forum/site is all about trivial first world problems. Discussions and arguments about which multi-national corporation makes better GPUs/CPUs. People complaining their encoding times or framerates are too low. People complaining about game bugs, etc. The battery on their phone doesn't last long enough. Apple removed a headphone jack. I'd rather have any of those "problems" than suffer from debilitating depression and anxiety, but I'm still going to complain about all that trivial stuff too. :p

Of course it is but we dont kill ourselves because of it. My Ryzen setup doesnt recognize my RAM and I come on here to bitch but Im not going to put one in the head because of it. Being stressed is one thing killing yourself because of it is another all together.

EDIT: Additionally at this point its probably pretty obvious he had other problems..

I actually kind of understand what he's going through but not completely. I make about $200k/yr and I don't really like what i do (i'm not suicidally depressed though). Sometimes careers can be like steering a ship. You make a 5° turn early in your life and then 10 years later you're off course from where you intended by thousands of miles. The big problem is once you have a family, you need to keep making that money to pay the mortgage, pay for your kids school, or whatever. Some people call it the "golden handcuffs". You might want to do something else that might make you happy but the paycut makes it 'impossible". Of course it's not really impossible, it's just that it would take a ton of adjustment that most people aren't willing to do. It's easier to just make money and be miserable.

This is exactly why I will likely never work for anyone but myself ever again. If I had children, I'd be still be stuck in a crappy marriage and a shitty job, but I'd make the sacrifice for my family. I can't remember when I was this happy.

I just joined the 6 figure club and relapsed into drinking. I'm about to go to rehab to detox and then follow with an intensive outpatient program. Sometimes success does weird things to those who have issues.

I've worked in restaurants. Those jobs aren't meant to be permanent. You can't make anything off of all the work you put in, especially if you make the federal $2.13 minimum wage/hr.

You obviously have no idea how depression works.

EDIT: My point is that maybe it's insensitive (it is, no doubt) but it's more ignorant than anything. 'm making an assumption but your comment to me says that you think he shouldn't have anything to complain about because he made a lot of money which is complete bullshit. That is NOT how depression works. Anybody that thinks killing themselves is the better alternative is quite obviously depressed.

They are not but people do work them permanently.
