Amazon Puts a Camera and Microphone into Your Bedroom with “Echo Look”

umm ya, so basically they figured they could data mine people with the amazon echo before. Now they want to expand their data mining possibilities, by now including a camera. Not to mention the security implications and then not even mention how such a device can be used against you by clever individuals/criminals.

With AI becoming more advanced, its really only a matter of time, before they will be able to access all the information they would ever need to destroy us via drone. You could be out mowing your yard and your neighbors camera device is accessed and used to pinpoint your location, and next thing you know there is a freaking missile blowing ur nuts away.

We might have won against net neutrality, but bigger battles stare us in the face now.

20 years ago if you asked everyone if you could put a camera and microphone into every room of their house they would have said no. Now people buy them and put them all over themselves. Not a big fan of something like this, and sadly we all know that it is only a matter of time before somebody highjacks one and starts to post the videos from them online.

So this invasive tech will open a few new porn channels for sure, you can't fix stupid people.

On the other hand as a small home improvement contractor who is getting older and no longer wants to work in the field as much or at least leave my yard I need to find a way to exploit this. Possible become a service to help people fix their own problems for a small fee and when they really screw it up send a technician out quickly. I could also do live estimates and consulting. Things to ponder.

Very true indeed however 80% of the people I know have no clue what skype is or how to use it, every one knows what Alexa is because it is listed on every facebook page they turn to. Ehh I will never do this I am at the point in my life where I am trying to slow down not get more involved..lol

I have an echo in every room, and many IP cameras. Could someone hack into them? Probably, but not easily and not worth the risk because what could they learn from me? Same with my physical security in the home. I care so I use good digital locks, class 1 bolts, and a decent security system, but with enough effort you can get around that... but is it worth the effort at that point?

Myself, like most people, just aren't interesting enough to be worth the jail time IMO. If I were a politician or celebrity or captain of industry or something, then absolutely not... but since I'm a random schmuck, what do I have to hide or that would be of value to a hacker? I'm not that interesting.

It still amazes me that people will go on and on about how Windows 10 is sending every aspect of your entire life back to the huge Windows 10 Personal Information Collection Server Farms*, and then go out and buy a device that's specifically designed to listen in on you and send the information back to huge server farms, and willingly connect it in their home.
I look at it the opposite way. People bitch up an 'illuminati' storm about the echo but carry a phone with them 24/7. Law Enforcement has been able to turn those into listening devices since the 90's, ask the Mob. This version is no different than leaving a webcam uncovered on a PC.

The one thing I can say about the Echo, is Amazon wants to sell you shit, they don't absolutely have to data mine to pay for the service. If they want to datamine you they datamine your purchase history already. Googles competing product has no way to pay for itself other than ads and data mining.

It's a comment on our cultural vanity if anything else. I predict by Christmas almost every upper middle-class to richie rich teenage daughter will have one by the end of the year. You could probably start a career on doing photo touchups to these uploaded pictures. I'm sure buffy, ariel, taylor, and some dude named Avril will pay you out of their allowance to turn each one into a glamour shot.
