While this is a poor choice for gaming, graphics professionals should know that they have a new choice for a color-accurate display. Dell has just announced the 4K UP2718Q, whose claim to fame is HDR10 and covers 76.9 percent of Rec.2020, the super-wide color gamut described for UHDTV. AFAIK, there is no display that can actually manage 100 percent of that yet, so Dell’s coverage here manages to be impressive for the time being. But if I had $2K for a monitor, I would just get a 4K OLED…

…Dell says the monitor hits 100 percent Adobe RGB, 100 percent sRGB, 100 percent REC 709, and 97.7 percent DCI-P3. Translation: It’s accurate. The monitor also rocks a searing 1,000 nits brightness—but only for HDR material. Otherwise, expect the monitor to pump out a still respectable 400 nits. Dell’s UltraSharp UP2718Q comes with two HDMI 2.0a ports, one DisplayPort 1.4, a mini-DisplayPort, and four USB 3.0 ports. It will be available on Dell.com for US customers starting May 23.

1,000 nits, LOL. Unless you're planning on using your display outside in direct sunlight, there is zero need for that. I'd be more afraid that if it's that high you can't actually turn the display down low enough to calibrate it for print work. I have mine to almost zero to set it for 120 cd/m, and it's probably half as bright as that monitor is.

The fact it doesn't do FreeSync or G-Sync is insulting.

This monitor is perfect for Photoshopdude. However, the price is too high for me. My IPS monitor is "good enough".

1000 nits is the minimum required max brightness to qualify for HDR10. HDR locally adjusts brightness to decrease or increase areas of the displayed image based on content.

See the video below. It's much more impressive in real life, but I think the video gets the point across. HDR is on the left, SDR on the right.

and theres no telling if it does like the sammies tvs, getting very bright for a sec then sustaning down some. sammy tvs top can hit something around 1500 nits. but only sustain it at 900.

We skipped a step. There aren't any HDR 1920x1080 monitors, are there? Specifically in a 27" screen with Freesynch, G-synch, displayport AND HDMI, and a matte finished screen for about $300-500? :sneaky:

I can't help but think HDR is a marketing spec

Who wants their retina burnt everytime there is a gun burst?

I don't usually play in a dark room so it probably wouldn't burn me as much. The improved contrast levels I can get behind

I understand that, but for $2,000 it should at least have the ability be a high end gaming monitor as well.
Why would they make it costlier to manufacture when their target market couldn't care less about that functionality? Do you understand what a target market is?

Yes I understand what a target market is. I am just saying for the price the target market has a lot of other, better, options, so they should throw something in to sweeten the deal. I am sorry that me wanting more for $2,000 has upset you so much...

Please do tell of these other magical panels just like this one at lower than $2k!
