Here comes the next smartphone gimmick. HTC has sent out an announcement for its next handset, codenamed “Ocean,” which sports a feature dubbed “Edge Sense” that relies on touch sensors embedded in the frame around the phone. Presumably, users will be able to pull up menus and initiate other actions by squeezing its edges. Is this the best idea, when a lot of phones are trapped in tight hipster jeans nowadays?

It will reportedly sport a 5.5-inch display, 4GB to 6GB of RAM and 64GB to 128GB of storage, depending on the model. It won't have a headphone jack. More importantly, Ocean will apparently feature what HTC calls "Sense Touch," which gives you the power to summon menus and trigger various actions by squeezing and swiping on its edges. Those details are but rumors, though. You'll have to wait until May 16th to find out for sure. HTC will stream the event live from Taiwan on its website, starting at 2AM Eastern.

I can imagine this might be tricky with cases, depending how they go about doing the sensors.

HTC, stop relying on gimmicks and play to your strengths, which in the past were metal construction, great speakers, solid audio output, somewhat tacit support for the modding community, and a useful but not overbearing UI.

And you need to include headphone jacks, forever.

WTF HTC I have been waiting to buy a new HTC phone forever since my m7 ONE phone which was awesome. How can you fail so bad so many times?

All I want is a m7 phone with a good no gimmicks camera, I liked the boom sound or whatever speakers in them 7, thats half the reason I bought it in the first place. Put a faster processor in it, more ram and a min 64gig storage in the phone. put a real sized battery in it I don't want a phone that is super slim like my s6 edge, I want a real battery. Prefer replaceable battery with a memory card port.
1080p or better screen, LEAVE THE DAMN headphone port. Your not a iphone, I like your software alot better then the Samsung s6 edge.

Done make a billion dollars. Thats all you have to do to win. How can you screw up every single phone you have made past the m7 ?

I am not buying a phone with out a headphone jack ever!. How are you still in business after so many failed phones when you had almost perfection with the m7.

ARRGGHHH.

People complain about lack of innovation in smartphones being boring "rectangle phones" that look and act the same with little difference. Someone finally does something innovative and people complain that it's different.... Come on now!

If Samsung or Apple had done this, people would be talking about how magical it is, or how it's a "must have" item on all new smartphones.

Eventually they'll equip them with touch various sensors all around the body and all will be good for a while. Then someone will no doubt build an adroid powered dildo with this tech and make billions. I think I have an idea for a start up

Nah, man. It wouldn't matter who implemented this, it's a cheesy gimmick no matter who did it. Your argument is totally baseless anyways, people flipped shit about Apple removing the headphone jack ("so brave", ring any bells?). And samsung, they get a ton of shit for their touchwiz and edge displays. Quit talking out of your exhaust port.

Htc is going to have to do more than add a squeeze me here feature to their boring and bland designs if they want to survive in this market. Any phone that doesn't look like the g6 and s8 with tiny bezel's now will be brushed aside.

Maybe online among the 1% that identify as tech enthusiast. Sales and high customer reviews from normal people say otherwise.

I mean, Every phone I own goes into an Otter Box..so that sort of renders this "feature" pointless.

Anyone else notice an issue with this, namely you have to HOLD YOUR PHONE BY THE SIDES?! Seems like it'd be constantly triggering the wrong things, loading random apps etc. As it is, I find I sometimes click the screen on my tablet because the touchscreen is too close to the edge where I'm holding it. Maybe I'm "old school" but I think mobile phones should concentrate on 4 things first and foremost: Battery life, signal quality, reasonable volume, and readable display. Everything else is a lot less relevant. I would love a phone that actually had a max volume able to match traffic noise while outside.
