AMD Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Devil Golden Sample

I think this is the important part, right? Been around here long enough to remember when the awards started to be a thing, and I always thought the graphic was stupid to begin with. I want to know if I can take a pencil to the gpu and get a few more cores out of it, not if it got a silly silver [H].
I will tell you this very plainly. We have awards because nearly every single manufacturers wants those for marketing.

I've been reading stories about 480's successfully being bio flashed to 580's. Interesting..........

Yeah, was just reading the same thing. Not really surprising to be honest, it's essentially the same silicon. I'm not sure I would do it, as the 580 is the "optimized" version of the chip so it should theoretically handle the heat load better, but hey if it works and you can get the temperatures under control, why not?

Talk about bang for the buck. Buy an 8GB RX480 for around $170-180 and flash it with the 580's bio's.

Maybe this could be an [H] future project?

Even a 4gb Rx 480 flashed would do just as well as an 8gb 580 in 95% of situations. The Rx 470s can be flashed to a 570 as well.

Has anyone tested a 580 with a Ryzen? I'm seeing a bunch of reviews today but all of them with Intel cpus. I'm not implying that it will make a difference, but hey, you never know right?

I actually don't have a problem with rebrands. I bought a 280X coming from the 6870 and I was happy with it. They are mostly targeting people that skipped one or two generations and are looking for a new thing to upgrade to.

Don't get me wrong I wish for AMD to do well, but these 580's. Some of which go for $270 are way overpriced. I would rather get a Used 980ti.....Seriously way overpriced IMO.

Specially now since you can flash a 480 to a 580 lol.

I am reading that certain people have certain cards in their hands from AMD for a review coming up. Can you confirm or deny that you have the card, and is it a rebrand?

Edit: In case people were wondering why I am asking.

Thats just one person Brackle, wheres the rest?

I figured ryan from anadtech was better than posting notable for posters who usually have hardware before release. So read the forums yourself.

Hint: dont just read American forums

What? You want me to hunt around for the thing you saw?

I've been trying to know if getting for example 2 580 4gb (about 400$ investment) in crossfire would give you a better value than a single 400$ card.
Don't seem to find any review with crossfire number.. do they even work in crossfire anymore?

I'd go with the 8gb versions for not much more money, any resolution you're needing crossfire for will benefit for the extra ram as well.

As far as performance, I'm sure it'd be solid, in the games that are supporting mgpu anyhow

Interesting point. We asked AMD a few weeks ago to give us a list of CrossFire supported games, and it took weeks to get an answer. There is no such page on its website. They did finally get back to us in regards to the specific list of games we were using for testing.

Mass Effect: Andromeda > DX11 – 4K ~ 1.4x

Watch Dogs 2 > DX11 – 4K ~ 1.6x

Battlefield 1 > DX11 – 4k ~ 1.7x (depending on patch version, there could be intermittent stuttering/flickering in CF mode)

Fallout 4 DX11 > no known issues, decent scaling

GTA5 DX11 > 4k ~ 1.9x

Witcher 3 DX11 > no known issues, decent scaling

Doom > Vulkan does not support mGPU

Sniper Elite 4 DX12 > up to 2x scaling

The Division DX12 > 4K up to 1.6x scaling

Gears of War 4 DX12 > 4K up to 1.8x scaling

Just popping back in here with a question for Kyle - another review site that had a couple different 580 and 570's measured noise, and were impressed with the apparently low noise from the cards. With the Golden Sample, did you perceive any difference in noise vs. other cards?

Anyone one if the rx 550 does hvec decoding? If so could be a good htpc card for $80.

I am so glad i decided on the 1060 6gb. It just seems strange we did not see a rx 490 first. The 580 seems a bit underwhelming.

Looks like it does:
the Radeon RX 550 offers support for modern media technologies. The HDMI 2.0b and DisplayPort 1.4 connections can handle 4K resolution and high-dynamic-range video, while the GPU’s capable of HEVC encoding and decoding. That makes this tiny graphics card an intriguing option for a home theater PC.

they should have just called it RX480ti ??? (why not after the Ryzen i7 i5 & i3) (and I am AMD processor fanbot) c'mon AMD lets put it in gear!!! at least try and differentiate yourself from the competition.... (rebadging is SO retro Nvidia)

Had really high hopes for 580. "Upgraded" from a 970 on a 1080p 27" to MSI Gaming X, 580 OC'd to 1450/2200 on a 32" 1440p monitor... meh. Not impressed with it at all. Playing Far Cry Primal on ultra gives not a really smooth playback. It's about 40-50fps average but on a large monitor any judder is magnified 2x. Really disappointed. Playing Far Cry 3 now and it's ok. I guess this card is ok for 3-5 y.o. games, but not for anything new. Maybe on smaller monitors things will look better, but it's the first time I "upgraded" the card and actually felt playing experience got worse. Should've gone for GF1080, had money but decided to get this and if it sucks (which it does) then I'll get Vega when it comes. If Vega sucks, then I'll get 1080, hopefully prices drop a bit, I saw a few 1080 for $420...

Also had high hopes for Freesync... meh... another overhyped BS. 10 extra FPS from a stronger card would do hell a lot more good than this. Oh well.

Another upgrade in 3...2...1...

Far Cry Primal is a bad game to test with. I can't even play it on 4K with a Titan X Pascal (getting barely 60 fps on High settings, mind you).

The 580 should be a great card for 1080p maxed, or possibly 1440p as well, provided it's a decently optimized game or with reasonable settings.

FC-P is not even the most demanding game and according to benchmarks it favors AMD... It's averaging about 50 fps and on paper it's a very good result. On paper.

I don't think my 970 was all that much faster in 1080p fps-wise... But I had 27" monitor then... I think 580 is giving me higher or same fps in 1440p.... But it's the damn acreage of 32" monitor that makes things bad... Used to be I'd be comfortable playing at 30fps on a 19-24" monitor... The larger the monitor the more nauseating motion judder is. And I'm not feeling Freesync at all... Don't think it helps much with anything at all.

I'm gonna hold off playing new games on a 580 until I can get some monster video card...

Strange what you say about FreeSync. I never tried it, but I have a G-Sync monitor and it's a game-changer. It looks so smooth and perfect, though usually you need to hit a certain fps range for best performance. On my set it's a 144Hz refresh but getting 90fps+ will look nice.

Wow I hAve freesync on one of my monitor and it's absolutely worth it. I have no idea what you are talking about. You pick a game that no one really stresses about. 50 fps is a mess to you with freesync? I don't know but my experience has been totally opposite of yours. And you seem to be on the odd ends of things. Far cry primal is not the best of games to really Judge your experience on. Just saying.

What size monitor do you have?

Have you tried some older games, just to make sure that FreeSync is working? IIRC FreeSync only works within certain frequencies, so be sure to check to make sure you are getting adequate performance.

Also, you should be able to play some newer games at 1440p with that card. DOOM is a good example and can get around 75 - 80 fps at 1440p Ultra settings.

I already finished it, it's one of the most optimized games ever. Runs at 100fps even on a microwave display. I just played Gothic 2 (circa 2000) and it's very smooth, so Freesync is on. My monitor shows a foot wide note "Freesync ON" whenever I turn it on and the driver says it's on too. Freesync range is only 48-60Hz for some reason, my monitor is 75Hz per specs and I installed the driver. Oh well, doesn't matter. This card will do for a couple of months until I decide on Vega vs 1080. Buying midrange stuff is very frustrating, you pay a lot of money and yet get compromised stuff that isn't good for much. Lesson learned.
