Ask the Facebook CEO what the next big thing is, and he will tell you “augmented reality.” Zuckerberg has reportedly spent the last 18 months working on a new interface for Facebook, Instagram, and other company apps focused entirely on the camera, which likely means less text and more photos or videos. Sure, let’s compel everyone to record everything—meanwhile, the company has no idea how to control murder documentaries being shared. Thanks to Kyle for this one.

…he envisioned a world in which people can eventually point smartphone cameras at a bowl of cereal and have an app create tiny sharks swimming in the bowl of milk. Friends can leave virtual notes for one another on the walls outside their favorite restaurants, noting which menu item is the most delicious. Apps like Pokémon Go, the breakout augmented reality hit that went viral globally last year, are just the beginning for Mr. Zuckerberg. One day, he mused, household objects could perhaps be replaced entirely by software. “Think about how many of the things around us don’t actually need to be physical,” Mr. Zuckerberg said in an interview last week. “Instead of a $500 TV sitting in front of us, what’s to keep us from one day having it be a $1 app?”

I really don't understand why some companies like MS and FB are so damn focused on AR instead of VR? AR sucks, it always has, and unless you have it in a pair of glasses that LOOK AND FEEL like regular glasses, it will NEVER take off! It needs to be seamless and offer more than just an advertising opportunity.

He must have been looking very hard. I just see a bunch of nonsense in facebook.

But that means you missed my posts about my daughter's one month birthday, my wife's and my 33 month anniversary, and my dog's three week wagging graduation.

And my post about how while I was running a marathon for charity I rescued an old woman from a burning building, yelled at a hater and changed his ways on the way in, stopped a mugging on the way out, and then finished the marathon in second place to help cure social anxiety.

You're everything I always wanted in a man. I'm not gay, but it seems you could convince me.

Yes! "Augmented" reality! Most of those people are living in their own lil universe.

Indeed. Who am I.

you're some dude from the great white north.... just because you don't have a FB account, don't think you're not "out there" on the web... 5 minutes of looking at your post history, and most people will know more than you think..:)

If someone looked closely and knew the tech industry, they could guess who I was, but not what I am.

lmao. if you're going that far why don't we just replace all our furniture/homes/cars with apps and live in cardboard boxes. shoot, throw in some ai and replace your family/friends also.

If the AI would play on Xbox Live with me instead of friending me and never talking to me, where do I sign up?

If AR is the future, then why has Facebook/Oculus gone out of it's way to prevent anyone from creating AR applications for the GearVR? (developers are not allowed to access the pass-though camera)

Why do you think, they don't want any of it released yet and want to take all ze patents.

Most likely.

Way too many people are already Phone Zombies. You know, those people walking around, falling into manholes, and mall fountains, or walking obliviously into heavy traffic or off a cliffs with their face glued to their cell phone screens. I suppose this might make that addiction a bit safer.

Yes they are. I hates them. The one pleasant exception was at the Oregon Coast this weekend (vague on purpose, ain't nobody horning in on my clamming!) where I saw just a few people with cell phones. It's pretty nice, our beaches here in the NW have not gotten out of the early 90's timewarp. Freaking VCR with Ewok Adventures for rent in the lobby, my kiddo loves it!

A lot of families with young children still have VCRs, because the tapes are more durable than DVDs, and you can pick up classic children's movies for pennies at a thrift store.

This is starting to be replaced by Netflix and cheap tablets, though.
