"Gnarly" Nathan Kirsch looks to have gotten his hand on a premiere example of a Ryzen 5 1500X processor. Or maybe not, maybe all those CPUs will all do 4.2GHz on the right motherboard? What is surely impressive is that he notes 100% system stability. I am not sure exactly if he did any stress tests or not, but he did run some full-core benchmarks, and I know that none of the Ryzen processors we have had our hands on would get close to doing that. In fact, out of the 10 or so we have purchased, none would keep a stable 4.1GHz with a full-core load.

Despite failing to dethrone Intel we feel that the 4-core-8-thread Ryzen 5 1500X processor will still make AMD fans happy. If you are still running an older dual-core system and have been waiting for the Ryzen series to come out then you’ll see some big performance gains. The Ryzen 5 1500X processor gives you a very responsive system that loves multi-threaded applications and the 1080p gaming performance is good enough.
 
Maybe it is bios hamstringing the overclockability afterall. At this rate we should see 4.5ghz in 6 months. lol
 
If Ryzen could start OCing like crazy it might convince me to buy but after looking at all these 4GHz pretty much being the cap I started pushing my system further. I hit 4.9Ghz all core and 5Gz single core. Probably going to crank some voltages to see if I can hit 5Ghz stable, but it really means I have to wait until Zen+. Nice 4.2 though.
 
Has anyone tried really locking down a Ryzen 5 CPU yet and oc'ing the hell out of it? All the data is pointing towards a clockwall at around 4Ghz.

What I mean by the above is just one core + smt & one core no smt with one/two sticks of memory? Also how about three cores with smt and three cores without smt with one/two sticks of memory. That would give a good indication of the power/heat of an individual core and hopefully nullify/reduce any mem controller efi/microcode issues.

Personally I think there's room for a few hundred more Mhz as 2nd gen mobo's enter the market but it still looks to me like the clockwall @ 4Ghz is there.

Also the gaming clock of Scorpio's GPU (1172Mhz) is also very telling, comparing RX480 clocks with Scorpio's implies that Global Foundries process node sucks in comparison to TSMC's and Ryzen is on the same process as RX480...

For a compact form factor with a limited power supply, 1.172GHz is pretty good.

Pretty good? It's more than that, it's got 36 enabled CU's and eight small x86 cores + fabric. For it to be clocked at 1.172Ghz and not melt anything next to a Scorpio's fan exhaust is extremely impressive.

TSCM's node is clearly better than GloFlo's (less leakage = less waste heat). Gimma a Ryzen CPU on TSMC's process over GloFlo's anyday it would surely have a higher clock wall than 4Ghz.

If you are gaming and only gaming, Intel is a better CPU, at least for now until future games are more thread aware which gives gives Ryzen a decent performance boost and evens things a bit, though Intel is still a bit better from what we have seen so far. In emulation Intel is still an undisputed king thanks to their raw single thread horsepower.

But if you also do some productivity work, things get blurry. Because Ryzen is a monster at that stuff. Combined with good enough gaming performance (which should get even better in the future games) the Ryzen suddenly becomes very attractive choice.
 
I did I just thought I remembered in the overclocking video you used the gigabyte mobo and you wrote down all your combinations until you were stable.

I musta missed when you switched to the Crosshair Or didn't pay attention to the mobo in the videos good enough. I just wanted the results!
I answered your first question with the first sentence. "Can you match his results?"

Yes, I have been used lots of motherboards.....No I do not know when GBT has a its next UEFI for the Gaming 5.

Try thinking out at least something intelligent to ask in regards to your questioning. It is a technical question, so how about something, anything technically related? Just a hint though.

As others have said, depends on what you want to do. I have seen many reviews showing Ryzens ability to stream while gaming and hold better FPS than its i5 counter part. I think even as a dedicated gaming PC you wont be disappointed in Ryzen, at higher resolutions it does yield better numbers (dont even start on the bottle neck issue), and if someone is planing on buying a GTX-1080 they will be gaming at 2k or up anyway. If money is not an issue, then Intel is the top tier.

not only 36 CUs, there are fully 40 Compute Units so 2560 Shaders at higher than base clock of original polaris 2304 shaders, but not only that, together with a 384bit bus that's some serious power there for a console..

As others have said, depends on what you want to do. I have seen many reviews showing Ryzens abiliter.

Of course it's serious. Sounds like ryzen is the one for me.
